A brilliant scholar, St. Francis seemed destined for a distinguished career in the service of the state. However, his piety in- spired him to hecome a priest. Through unceasing work, he converted 72,000 Calvinist and became Coadjutor Bishop of Geneva in l602. Soon after- wards St. Francis, together with St. lane Frances dc Chantel, founded the Visitation Crder of nuns in flnnecy. llowever, not until 1870 when Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis and Father Louis Brisson founded the Ohlates of St. Francis de Sales did the Salesian spirit include an order of priests and hrothers. The order lirst appeared in America early in the 20th century when due to antifelerical lieelings they were liorced to llee France. Under the guidance of liathers lsenring, Fromentin and lacquier the Oh- lates settled in Vvilinington. Delaware. The Society did not hegin to hlossom, however, until after the Second Wlorld VVar. Since that time it has hecome one ol' the most progressive orders in America with its niemhership totaling well over six hundred priests, hrothers and scholastics. Start- ing with hut one school at Vvilmington in 1903, the congregation now maintains schools in Phila- delphia, llarrishug, Pa.: Toledo, Ohiog Erie, Pa.g Niagara ljalls and l-ocl4port, New Yorli: Detroit.
