'I . I T HIS I-IOLINESS, POPE PAUL VI Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome And causes man to stand raised, triumphant and alone Moral courage is good and admirable in itself, but it must be noted that it almost never appears except as a part of character. No man without character is consistently courageous. The men pictured on these pages, our spiritual leaders, because of their exalted positions are men of courage and faith. These men do what they must in spite of personal consequences, obstacles, dangers and pressures. This is the basis of all human morality. We place these men at the top of our esteem, who take chival- rously the heavy blows of life, who are not merely brave, but gallant. Every step forward in life means another challenge overcome. Great men become so because of the chal' lenges they met. A paradox is found in the words of our late president, john F. Kennedy who said: There are no great men, hut there are great challenges which normal men are forced to make hy circumstances. Courage is the sustaining factor in meeting every challenge. So often we associate personal courage with bravery in war, a walk in space, or the overcoming of some great crisis in one's life. llowever, this is not true. ln most cases there are the exception. john F. Kennedy said: To he courageous requires no exceptional qualification, no magic formula, no special comhination of time, place and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. So, then, the classroom, athletic held. religion. politics, social activities, human relations and human rights hecome arenas wherein our courage is tested. Courage, then, is seldom manifested in simple ways, but the truly courageous man performs simple deeds with unwavering fortitude. faith and hdelity to his principles.
