Great men become so because of the chal' lenges they met. A paradox is found in the words of our late president, john F. Kennedy who said: There are no great men, hut there are great challenges which normal men are forced to make hy circumstances. Courage is the sustaining factor in meeting every challenge. So often we associate personal courage with bravery in war, a walk in space, or the overcoming of some great crisis in one's life. llowever, this is not true. ln most cases there are the exception. john F. Kennedy said: To he courageous requires no exceptional qualification, no magic formula, no special comhination of time, place and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all. So, then, the classroom, athletic held. religion. politics, social activities, human relations and human rights hecome arenas wherein our courage is tested. Courage, then, is seldom manifested in simple ways, but the truly courageous man performs simple deeds with unwavering fortitude. faith and hdelity to his principles. 'I . I T HIS I-IOLINESS, POPE PAUL VI Vicar of Christ, Bishop of Rome And causes man to stand raised, triumphant and alone Moral courage is good and admirable in itself, but it must be noted that it almost never appears except as a part of character. No man without character is consistently courageous. The men pictured on these pages, our spiritual leaders, because of their exalted positions are men of courage and faith. These men do what they must in spite of personal consequences, obstacles, dangers and pressures. This is the basis of all human morality. We place these men at the top of our esteem, who take chival- rously the heavy blows of life, who are not merely brave, but gallant. A brilliant scholar, St. Francis seemed destined for a distinguished career in the service of the state. However, his piety in- spired him to hecome a priest. Through unceasing work, he converted 72,000 Calvinist and became Coadjutor Bishop of Geneva in l602. Soon after- wards St. Francis, together with St. lane Frances dc Chantel, founded the Visitation Crder of nuns in flnnecy. llowever, not until 1870 when Mother Mary de Sales Chappuis and Father Louis Brisson founded the Ohlates of St. Francis de Sales did the Salesian spirit include an order of priests and hrothers. The order lirst appeared in America early in the 20th century when due to antifelerical lieelings they were liorced to llee France. Under the guidance of liathers lsenring, Fromentin and lacquier the Oh- lates settled in Vvilinington. Delaware. The Society did not hegin to hlossom, however, until after the Second Wlorld VVar. Since that time it has hecome one ol' the most progressive orders in America with its niemhership totaling well over six hundred priests, hrothers and scholastics. In keeping with the St. Francis tradition of com- plete education, the foreign study program instituted by our principal, Father Shugrue five years ago, was conf tinued, The boys who take part in this program spend a year studying at one of the two Oblate schools: Haus Overbach in Germany or College St. Michel in Annecy, France. These boys, of course, go to Europe for more than study. A considerable portion of the year is spent in travel to countries such as Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Standing in front of the chapel at Annecy are: Evan Mac Gibbon, Tom Crossen, Tom Madden, Dick Ryley, Father Griffin, a former teacher at St. Francis, Don Balon, Frank XVIISSCTWILXYI and Don Wpfatt. llolland, Denmark, England and of course France and Germany. This travel offers a unique insight into the customs and way of life of the Europeans, which may at times seem strange to us. This insight is especially important today, with our ever-increasing contact with Europe and its inhabitants. This bridge between three members of the Oblate family, spanning an ocean, offers rare opportunity each year to a few Knights. It is almost unequalled anywhere at the high school level. After Mass offered for a safe journey, Father Shugrue greets the foreign students, their relatives and friends. ,,..--qi iii A --47.- -oq. Mass is a time for reflection as seen in the faces of Chip Moynihan, Rick Nach azel, Gerry Pickens and ,lim King. The crowning event of our spiritual life at St. Francis is the annual retreat. Father Shugrue cele- brates Mass on the closing day of retreat. 34 fi, Father Sottek distributes Holy Communion. To achieve success in any school activity, whether it is intellectual or athletic, it is necessary for every student to possess a certain amount of 'Religious Courage'. All our activities must revolve, in some way, around Christ. Our Oblatc teachers are most conscious of this necessity. They have made all types of Catholic religious services available to us. From our first day of high school, when as Freshmen we attended the Mass of the Holy Spirit to initiate the school year, our lives have been stirred by religious ac- tivities. Mass and Confession are available to us each day. After school Benediction is held every day in October and May, as well as each Friday afternoon. Stations of the Cross are said during Lent. Holy Communion is distributed each Friday at lunchtime and, of course, the chapel is always open. Easter vacation is preceded by the highlight of our spiritual year, the annual Retreat. Our religion becomes part of our life in the light and spirit of St. Francis de Sales. This 'Sales- ian Spirit' which is fostered in us from the time we enter our school, and the availability of religious services is what gives students the courage to perse- vere and be successful in the true tradition of St. Francis de Sales. 35 w f . , Father Kelly preaches on the Feast of St. Francis De Sales. 5-'--f'..,. Our Director, Mr. Zapletal, aided by capable moderators such as Father McKay, Father Schaefer and Father Fitzpat- rick, molded the fine band known to us all today. Talent, dedication, inspiration and, above all, patience were all required for this monumental task, The band witnessed changes in uniforms, a new music room in the new addition, a change in format from the drum and bugle corps to the more versatile regular band, and of course, a continuous succession of talented musicians. The excellence achieved by this year's edition was not an accident. Practice started in the heat of summer, and many long hours were spent practicing the intricate drill enjoyed by all at football halftime. The beginning of the school year brought a new moderator, Mr. O'Con- nor, and his leadership continually pushed the band to new heights of achievement. After football season the band settled down to the serious work, of preparing for the concert season. High- lights were the Christmas concert, the hootenanny and the concert in April. Special recognition should he given the pep band who played at home basketball games. Saxmen Charlie Malin, Bob Evers and Gene Kratzman entertain at the Bruce Shuman and Chuck Benda sound a charge. A Knight of St. Francis de Sales, while proving his personal and physical courage in scholastic and athletic endeavors, must also develop, through en- couraged social activities, his social graces. As in the past, the many events are under the capable direction of the Student Council, ably led by their moderator, Father Cross. Falling leaves, brisk air and the pigskin ushered in the first two Functions - The Homecoming Dance and the Victory Hop, where a huge Number 1 hanging from the gym ceiling left little doubt that the Knights were thc new city champions. These events were followed by the weekend hops, the Battle of the Bands and the Hootenanny. The Junior-Senior Prom highlights spring activities. For it was in this year that the Knights combined fine coaching, tremendous attitude and ability to ride off with their first football City Championship. The red and blue posted an enviable record of eight wins and only one defeat. Our record was marred by a heartbreaking 14-12 loss to Scott in which we completely dominated every statistic except number of points scored. The talented Knights fashioned six shutouts enroute to their 8-1 record while amassing 142 points to the opposition's 33. The greatest thrill of the year, however, came at the expense of arch- rival Central. On that cold afternoon of September 26th the men of St. Francis pounded out an inspired 10-O victory and returned the lrish Knight to its home. But the Central victory was just one of the many highlights of 1965. The St. Francis eleven also posted a very convincing 28-13 win over our neighborhood rival Devilbiss and therefore regained the Hilton Murphy'Sportsmanship Trophy. By football standards the Knights certainly were not big, but by the standards of athletes, champions and men the Knights were not only big, they were the biggest. As far as individual honors are concerned, St. Francis landed six spots on the All-City first team and three on the All-City second team. Those on the first team were Karl Panltratz, Dave Bailey, lim lVlang, Ken Klear, Brad Topolslti and Bruce Laubcr. Those landing births on the second team were john Dooley, john Schlageter and Joe Rowland. Karl Pan- kratz and Dave Bailey were also named to the Northwestern Ohio All- District first team. Their talent belied by a mediocre 5-4 dual meet record, the swimmers picked up momentum in the season which swept them to the district title and fifth place in the state championships in Columbus this year. The Knights went north to Michigan for their first two contests. hflonroe Public, 1964-65 Michigan champions, ruined Coach l3allatore's debut by downing St. Francis 66-39. The team did better the following week against Adrian. However, they came away from that meet one point short of having registered their Hrst vic- tory. Competition proved somewhat easier in home waters. The Knights swam against four Ohio schools, beating them all by impressive margins, with one exception, 89 il! a 50-45 squealcer over Fremont. Our solt defeat against an Ohio Team came at the hands of Toledo YMCA, 48-47. Besides Fremont, the swimmers dunlied Findlay, 59-41g Port Clinton, 72-233 and Lima Shawnee twice, 71-24 and 62-33. But the Michigan jinx held true all season. ln their second meeting, Adrian made it two in a row over the Knights hy a score of 49-46. The swimmers exploded for three first places and rolled up 62W points in the Northwestern Ohio championship. Eight Knights qualihed for the state meet. They garnered 69M points placing fifth in the state. That's exactly four notches lower than Coach Ballatore figures we'll hnish next year. As a St. Francis graduate looks back on his senior year, graduation strikes his mind as the major event H the iinale to a long road of events - some small or routine, others important or unforgettable. Graduation ollicially brings the senior year to an end but where does it all begin? For the Senior Class of 1966, the first formal step was taken on October the twentieth, at St. Pius X Church, the scene of the impressive Senior Ring Cere- mony. Pride and dignified solemnity marked the cere- mony as mothers and their young men assisted in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass celebrated by Father Brennan, our senior moderator. An eloquent homily was delivered hy Father Fisher on the historical background and sig- nil-icance of the coveted ring. After Mass Father Shugrue blessed the rings and presented them to the seniors. Outside the church, proud mothers anxiously await a glance at the class rings as their 'Knightsf looking down at their 'mark of distinction', realize that Act IV, Scene l of Life at St. Francis' has come to an end. This intangihle 'courage' took many and varied forms. The long hours of study that were neces- sary to meet the high scholastic standards of St. Francis showed a certain amount of courage. Nearly everybody knows of boys who started high school at St. Francis hut did not have the courage to persevere in their studies and consequently did not have the opportunity to finish at St. Francis. Physical courage is needed hy the Knights that participate in varsity sports, winning city championships for St. Francis in nearly every sport, as well as hy the 'Plowjockeysf 'l'luel4sters'. 'Fishmongers' and 'lflellraisers' that light Iiercely for intramural champion- ships in everything from foothall to ping pong. The ever present threat of 'jug' and of demerit slips seemed to give many students an adrenalin-type hoost of courage. Spiritual courage is evident hy the attendance at pre- school Masses, afternoon Bencdictions and the distrihution of lfloly Communion dur- ing Friday lunch periods. lt is our hope that the memhers ol' the class of l966 will continue to possess this virtue of courage For their entire lives and it will lead them to their ultimate goal - God. We have chosen the virtue of courage for our theme because we felt that it is so important, especially so today. We have attempted to show how necessary it is in every phase of our lives - moral, intellectual and physical, and that we have been made most conscious of this in our school life. We know that in later years when we pick up this book it will recall to our minds events perhaps long forgotten, faces obscured by time, the joys, sorrows and the dis- appointments of our school lives which have faded into the twilight of history. For you, too, who read this book, we hope that it will Accolade staff meets with Moderator Father Earley in the school library. Stall: members arc: Ralph Zychowicz, Carl Riedy, Gary be a source of inspiration, that it will cause you to prac- tice the virtue of courage not only in great crises, which, incidentally, so infrequently come into our lives, but also in the little things in our everyday lives which time and time again pop up from round about us. The gift of courage which St. Francis has attempted to strengthen in our lives we pass on to you. In the words of Plautus: Courage is the best gift of all, courage stands before every- thing. It is what preserves our liberty, safety, life and our homes and parents, our country and children. Courage comprises all things: a man with courage has every bless- ing.
