,, vv' ,X fl rf., s cs l s A S.. ' f 4' X li lm f V Reverend Francis T. Carney, S.S.J. Pastor, Saint Francis Xavier Church. Amid trials, hardships, disappointments and physical sufferings, Father Carney has struggled to build our high school. Fortified by the virtures of faith, hope, and charity, our good pastor per- severed in this project. Today, Father Carney gratefully recalls the work of his years at Saint Francis Xavier. We Witness the material fruit of his labor in our high school building, our school cafeteria, the renovation of our auditorium, and the beautiful church of the Immaculate Conception in Scotlandville. This material growth, however, is but a faint reflection of the spiritual progress inspired by the exemplary spirit of self- sacrifice of our beloved pastor. In him we find a true spiritual father and an understanding friend. In other words to the fullest extent he fulfills his role in the priesthood as Another Christ. 11

SU' THE JOSEPHITE FATHERS ll30 NORTH CALVERT STREET BALTIMORE 2, MARYLAND ST JOSEPH S SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART, INC. H g I IN I oFFlcE or Teleph THE suremon GENERAL Smamqa 7 86 December 7 , 1955 Reverend Francis T. Carney, S.S.J. St. Francis Xavier Church 1143 S. llth Street Baton Rouge 10, Louisiana Dear Father Carney: 'When Almighty God implanted in the human heart the parental instinct,He also unfolded the three great ideas that lie at the very foundation of man's moral dignity, his social happiness, and his eternal destiny. These three important ideas are: duty, right, and responsibility. Children, your parents have discharged their DUTY by edu- cating you according to the principles of the Religion of Jesus Christ. They have exercised their RIGHT by sending you to St. Francis Xavier High School. Your parents have undertaken their RESPONSIBILITY of providing youwith this Catholic education be- cause of an awareness that they must answer before no less a tribu- nal than the judgment seat of Almighty God. In fulfilling their duty, right, and responsibility to give you this Catholic education, your parents have made numerous sacrifices. Be grateful, children, for the great sacrifices which your good parents have made for you. Other sacrifices, holy ones, are also involved. Do not forget the devoted Sisters and zealous Priests who have taken your tender hearts into their careful custody and have pictured, bright and clearn, the image of God that is in your immortalsouls. These religious men and women have dedicated their lives to your edu- cation because they remember one of the most inspiring events in the life of our Master when Jesus uttered the inspiring words, Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God. I offer up an earnest prayer of gratitude to God daily for schools such as yours and I should like to voice my most fervent good wishes to you, your parents, the Sisters, and the Priests. May the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost descend upon you and remain forever. Sincegrely yours in Christ, fp sm ,gg Superior General

Hlnsephite glfathers 51- glfrzrnnis Kanter ffflqurnly ELEVENTH ST. BATON ROUGE, LA. December 19, l 955 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT It is my happy privilege as pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church to salute our beloved Archbishop, Most Reverend Joseph Francis Rummel, for his Excellency's guidance and genuine interest in the Catholic education of the children of this parish. Again words of praise must be extended to the Most Reverend L. Abel Caillouet, Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans who has been a constant friend and kind benefactor of our school. We acknowledge with sincere thankfulness the unsurpassing co- operation of the Superior General of the Society of Saint Joseph ofthe Sacred Heart, Very Reverend Thomas P. McNamara, S.S.J. The splendidwork of all Josephite Pastors and Assistants assigned to St. Francis Xavier. They have tilled the soil -- sown the seed -- from which has been harvested this sorely needed addition to our parish plant. Mindful indeed must we be OI our debt to the Very Reverend Mother Mary Philip, Superior General of the Holy Family Sisters and all the members of her Community who by their excellent ser- vice -- their example -- their self-sacrifice and teaching have in- stilled into the hearts of our children agreat love for Almighty God. Yes, keenly do we recognize with thankful hearts the continued loyalty of our good lay teachers , who, even to the extent of person- al loss have labored zealously that Catholic education might pro- gress in this portion of the vineyard. - Only the most complimentary expressions of love and loyalty can be profferred to the parishoners and friends of St. Francis Xavier for their good will and unstinting sacrifice of earthly wealth and labor that has brought into being our beautiful new building. Nor shall we forget the efforts of our school children, from our Tots ofthe First to our Graduates of the Twelfth for their untiring efforts in raising money through school activities. Their efforts have played an important part in this educational program. Their older brothers and sisters, our Alumni, rejoice with us, even though they have borne the burden and discomfort of our temporary buildings they facetiously called the White House. All,either directly or indirectly, have had a part in thelrealization of our new building. No wonder our hearts and minds are joyful this day,as we realize that through the blessings of Almighty Godg through the intercession of Mary Immaculate and good Saint Joseph, through the co-operation of all has come forth our new Saint Francis Xavier High School to enable our children to pursue in comfort and convenience their task of the day .... preparing them- selves for the Kingdom of God and their life's work on earth.
