AJOHN 2 5 When they have known classmates for three years, seniors are expected to select as their class president a girl who not only has average scholastic ability, but also poise, reliability, personality, and leadership. Besides these qualities she must be able to accept any kind of responsibility and work when- ever it is given to her. Leadership is an important character- istic which must be present in a president. Being generous and cooperative are essential in order to hold this office since the president must assist on the dance committees. She must supervise class projects and charitable projects such as col- lecting old clothes, filling baskets for Christmas or Thanks- giving charity. Senior presidents are prominent in all social events. These girls participate on class day during the crowning of Our Lady on the campus as attendants to the president of the student body. They are honored when at assemblies they in- troduce the speakers. Included in the presidents' duties are the planning and di- recting of class meetings. The order of the class and continu- ation of the lesson is left to the president, if the teacher is unavoidably delayed from a class. Presidents still find time for extra-curricular activities besides fulfilling all the above requirements. Patricia Dunphy, Senior One, member of Glee Club and World Affairs Forum, wishes to become an elementary teacher. Planning to have a nursing career interests Barbara Carlin, Senior Two. Carmella Rossi, Senior Three, enjoys attending football games. Dolores Smith, Senior Four, and Ann McGurn, Senior Five, like dancing 1 when time permits. Carolyn Murphy, Senior Six, enioys good basketball games. Dorothy is a member of the senior clerical training group intending to become a general worker. During the school term the Glee Club sings on important occasions. The choristers made their debut on October 29 singing The Ave Marie and The Italian Street Song at the annual Teachers' Institute. Following this program the choristers united with the dramatics club to wel- come Mother Provincial whom they honor each year. The next performance occurred in Decem- ber when the Glee Club provided musical enter- tainment for the Christmas play. Their main event is the operetta, held to contribute to the annual Catholic Charities Fund appeal. In the month of June, the choristers, clad in caps and gowns, lead the singing for class day exercises, Undergradu- ates Day and Parent's Night programs. AVE MARIA CHORISTERS sang The Italian Street Song Ave Maria, and the Star Spangled Banner at the opening session ofthe Teachers Institute Ann Saritelli rendered ll Bacio WHY Y Lord a new song. Once again, proud fathers escorted their daughters to the halls of Saint Xavier's for the third annual Father's Night Dance. These self-esteemed fathers met their daughter's homeroom and subject teachers. After introductions, the fathers were brought to the gym, beautifully decorated under the direction of Sister Mary Gervase, R.S.M., art teacher. Tommy Masso and his orchestra supplied the festive music which ranged from waltzes to polkas. However, the fathers. were convinced that they were not as young as they used to be after one or two turns at the Mexican Hat Dance. By the end of the evening, everyone was convinced that the night was full of fun. The sound of laughter and music is gall intermingled. FOLLOWING THE Grand March of the Fathers Night Dance, the proud fathers and their daughters assemble at the foot of the shrine of Our Lady The presentation of flowers at the shrine by Mary Beecher preceded the singing of the hymn To You Our Blessed Mother, by the entire assembly. .4 y Z' 2. :: 4 1. .' It was the night of the Junior Prom, an event which will be cherished for many years in the memories of all who attended. The gymnasium, decorated under the supervision of Sister Mary Gervase, R.S.M., was transformed into an album of mem- ories, the theme for both the junior and senior proms being Highlights of a Graduate's Life. All the side boards in the gym were covered by six scenes which proved to be most outstanding in any girl's life. First Love showed a young boy offering a girl a bouquet of roses. This was followed by Sweet Sixteen in which the girl is ready for her first formal dance and the follow- ing scene showed the girl leaving the dance with her best beau. Next in order were graduation day, her wedding day, and lastly she was shown as a grandmother talking to her grandchild. Music was furnished by Tommy Masso and his orchestra. After intermission everyone joined in the grand march followed by the presentation of flowers to Our Lady. A most successful Junior Prom was ended with night prayers and a hymn to Our Lady.
