Muruen usnuifxi IT IS A DEEPLY appreciated privilege for the Class of i953 to dedicate this edition of THE XAVIER to Mother Mary Bernadine, R.S.M., Mother General ot the Sisters ot Mercy in the United States ot America. As Mother General for twelve years and as Mother Assistant General tor the same length ot time, Mother Mary Bernardine has been actively engaged in administering the affairs of the Generalate since the amalgamation in i929. Since 1941, she has held the highest position, superior general ot 6,000 Religious Sisters ot Mercy, more than halt the entire number of daughters of Mother Mc Auley in this country. Her Sisters have beheld in her a model of spiritual authority, a pattern from the heart of the true Sister ot Mercy, gentle, strong, and valiant . . . Agfa, ,-f' Gentle, strung ani: haliant. MOTHER GENERAL holds a statue, once the possession oi Mother Mary Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy 122 years ago. Among Mother General's souvenirs, too, are reolia from Mercy mis- sions in Belize, Trinidad, and British Guiana. J'-, Vi ee WON'T YOU SIGN your name in our guest book? Mother General invites visi- tors to the General Motherhouse in Bethesda, Maryland. Many Church digni- taries, learned scholars, visiting superiors, Sisters, and lay guests have left this brief record of a delightful visit. smart X. hr., I x x IAL Aiiiiiiig Mother General was taught by the Sisters of Mercy in Saint Patriclcs Grammar School, Belletontaine, Ohio. Previous to her entrance into the Cincinnati community, she attended classes at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in that city. Her period of novitiate completed, Mother General taught in grammar school for five years and for the same length ot time in Our Lady ot Mercy Academy, previous to her work at Sister's College, Catholic University, Washington. She returned to Cincinnati as Directress of the Academy. FROM THE NUCLEUS that was Mother McAuIey's convent at Baggott Street, Dublin, Ireland, the Institute has grown pro- digiously. During her term ot oftice, she directed the construction ot an addition to Mercy Hospital in Hamilton and of a new academy at West- wood. Her term of oftice had just expired at the time of the amalgamation. She was elected Mother Assistant General on August 28, I929, and Mother General twelve years later. A. caps perched on their heads, and green bows typify this year's freshman class consisting of 108 students. Quite thrilled with outside activities, freshmen anx- iously ioined several clubs. Basketball, home eco- nomics, orchestra, and the art club proved favorite choices. . Since the Blessed Sacrament is ever present in Xavier Hall, freshmen are greatly privileged to have home- rooms there. Change of classes takes them to Acad- emy and Mercy Halls during the day. Freshmen One, Two, and Three comprise the classical, scientific, and commercial divisions. Their class presi- dents are Catherine Brennan, Margaret McGovern, and Ruth Powers. CAROL SULLIVAN and Denise Scott of Freshman One voice their wholehearted approval of school life at Saint Xavier's. Both feel that the Freshmen Welcome highlighted their activities at the academy. EXHIBITING HER SENSE of humor, Ruth Powers of Freshman Three gives quick re- action to an amusing story. OH, MOTHER, guess what? cries the poor freshmen por- trayed by Constance Landrigan during the annual Freshmen Welcome. She unhappily relates to her sympathetic mother, Marie Hurlbut, and her superior sophomore sister, .loan Mar- shall, the happenings of the first day of school at Saint Xcvier's. THIS IS VERY nice work, says Prefect, Mary Beecher, checking art work done by Cynthia Kelley, Senior Four. Cynthia is staff artist of The Actionist, bi-monthly sodality news sheet, This news letter contains informative material which is discussed at weelmly Sodality Club meetings. AS CHAIRMAN of the Literature and ou tu a lube pnur faith hath merit . . . One very nice feature about the sodality here is that every year it is re-vitaminized. Energized by a Catholic Action, each year's new enthusiasm for Our Lady's work prosaic, these girls recall Father session at the Summer School of sodality board returns with glowing When the going gets a bit more Lord's dynamic personality, his un- daunted spirit, his challenge to set the forld on fire for Christ. So, if they don't fire S.X.A. sodalists with love for God and zeal for militant Catholic Action, they do fan little sparks into warmer glows. And how? This year, nearly I75 girls signified their intention of meeting once a week with Sister Mary Eloise, R.S.M., to study the sodality rules and to become top-ranking sodalists. Baskets for the poor at Thanksgiving and Christmas overflowed with testimony of girls' care for our neighboring poor. Sodalists entertained the lonely at local orphanages, hospitals, and institutions for the aged, bringing gifts as messages of Christ's concern for His afflicted. Mission lands shared their generosity, too. Mite box contributions continued daily, a drive for medical supplies brought sizeable results for needy missionaries. The Actionist unfailingly reminded the student body of spiritual as well as temporal proiects. 'vi GIRLS WHO TOOK part in the modesty campaign, take a last minute look at their gowns before they model them for the student body. To combat the trend toward immodest gowns, the school Sodality sponsored a fashion show displaying acceptable dresses. 5 were sir Queen's Work Committee, Joan Salisbury reports all sodality activities to the Queen's Work. Career Angel, a comedy by Gerard Maiella Murray, was adapted for the use of an all-girl cast by Sister Mary Donatus of lmmaculata College, Immaculata, Pennsylvania, Taking place in Providence Institute, a Catholic home tor girls, the action centers chiefly about the toundress of the institute and her somewhat unconventional guardian angel. The institute is about to close down because of debts which cannot be paid. With the help ot her angel, the foundress, Sister Seraphim, finds a practical if unexpected solution to her problem. The entire play was repeated for the public. PAULINE DOWNEY impersonate-d the career angel throughout the play. A very unconventional angel, she sat on the ecge at the superior's desk, interpolated the sisters' conversations with witty remarks, filled them with apprehension by her unpredictable entrances and exits. She created serious trouble for her earthly Y charge, Sister Seraphim, before she finally was instrumental in solving her problem. AN ORIGINAL CAREER is provided by Sister Ubaldus IPat Dunphyl, Sister Fidelis J CPat Hinesj, and Sister Seraphim Haan Marshalll and Sister Gregory CConstance Landriganl for the angel IPauIine Downeyl. Towards the end of the year, a series of basketball games takes place in which teams compete for the school basket- ball shield.. Climaxing the year's activity is Play Day in which all gym classes participate. Under the direction of Dr. Clara Smith, Miss Mary O'Neill, R.N., and Miss Florence Paquette, physical education instructor, this health program aims to keep the girls physically tit. Each student receives a medical examination. DR. CLARA SMITH here gives a routine throat check to Helen Dziemiach. To acquaint Xavier- ites with health rules, Doctor Smith organized a series of lec- tures on diet, proper food and grooming, and on personal hy- giene. Mental health was also stressed in her alternate weekly meetings with seniors, iuniors, sophomores, and freshmen. While at St. Xavier's, girls of the classical and scien- tific divisions may ioin either the Latin, French, and German clubs. Commercial students have the oppor- tunity to take part in the Spanish Club. Latin club students subscribe to Auxilium Latinum and concentrate on cultural background and Roman his- tory at their monthly meetings. Members of the French Club subscribe to a monthly paper, La Croisade, which provides material for progress in French. Slides and recording pertaining to life in France are used at French Club meetings. To increase facility in using Spanish through conver- sations, games, skits, and songs is the aim of the Spanish Club. The history of Latin America countries provide interesting subiects for research. WITH AN EYE to the weather, Helen Hoard exclaims to Margaret Salisbury, Es regnetl Ich bin fertig. Freshmen show much enthusiasm for daily classes in general science, which are a preparation for later advanced study. As upperclassmen, they will be taught basic courses in biology or chemistry which will make them eligible for college or for nursing school. 4 A-.. Hi 9 Beginning in their freshman year, Xavierites become familiar with the scientific world by taking courses in general science. If they choose to follow the scientific course, biology is offered in their sophomore year, physics in their junior year, and chemistry in their final year. Classical students get their share of biol- ogy during the senior year. Most girls pursuing the scientific course plan to become nurses, dieticians, laboratory technicians, or physical education teachers. To add spice to the classes and to develop deeper interest in the subjects, various sets of slides and mo- tion pictures are available for visual aid in the class- rooms. ln addition to this, chemistry students are re- quired to spend one hour and a half each week performing experiments in the well-equipped labora- tory under the supervision of Sister Mary Rosalia, R.S.M., A.B., head of the science department. Each year, Saint Xavier's girls prove their scientific ability by claiming many prizes at the Science Fair sponsored by the Providence Journal. In 1952, fifty per cent of the forty-eight Xavierites who entered were awarded grants. Since 1949, four Saint Xavier's alumnae have won science scholarships to Salve Regina College in Newport. SENIORS IN THE chemistry class learn to measure liquids by looking at the graduate cylinder in order to determine the amount of copper sulphate in it. Putting their knowledge ob- tained during lectures into practical use, this group meets often in the lab.
