IIT mM Fl Catho'c each' g ay ourish Extending her hands as if to welcome each Xavierite, the statue of Our Lady of Grace is cen- tralized on the campus of Saint Xavier's Academy. Evergreen shrubs, plush green grass, radial walks, and seasonal-changing maple and elm trees tit- tingly surround this symbol of our Blessed Lady. Nearby, stands L-shaped Academy Hall, the most modern of the Academy's three buildings. With ivy covering its red brick facade, Mercy Hall is situated between Academy Hall and Xavier Hall, the resi- dence of Saint Xavier's faculty. As the first of the present structures, Mercy Hall was erected in 1855 to house expanding enrollment. STOPPING lN at the Donut Kettle for an afternoon snack, usually consisting of coke and doughnuts, are Barbara Mor- tinelli, Carole Ashworth, Alice Larsen, Ruth Leeder, Frances Rendine, and Marilyn Aneyci. ., V 2, After two-thirty any afternoon, navy blue and white uniformed students of Saint Xavier's Academy can be found sprinkled through downtown Provi- dence crowds. Stopping for a short visit, many Xavierites solve their troubles while reciting the rosary in the cool dimness of the Cathedral. Others shop and hold iobs after school in Providence de- partment stores. In the Providence Public Library, some students do research work and supplement their home assignments. Lingering over sodas and doughnuts in the snack shops, the girls discuss the happenings of their school day. Many St. Xavier's uniforms are seen at the mall while girls bound for home await the bright yellow U. E. R. buses. Easily recognized by their distinctive uniforms, the Xavier- ites uphold the Catholic traditions of their school by their courtesy. -2' Ni le ' -Ref .5 Mx wi: lb IJ 'PN 4 XM .W 14 Y g, :gl- ' 1 x 58 fi' R. Through popular television and radio programs, Father Patrick Peyton has spread the practice of saying the family rosary. Here at Saint Xavier's, the Living Rosary, sodality meetings, and homeroom Pilgrim Virgin statues have helped promote devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary. Thus, in this time of crisis, when the atomic bomb threatens to rain destruction on all men, we turn in fervent supplication towards the greatest intercessor for peace, Our Lady, Queen of the Rosary. XJ-of ACADEMY SENIORS, iuniors, and sophomores are pictured here as they marched in procession for the giant Rosary Crusade held at the Narragansett stadium. They formed a living rosary pageant in one area of the field opposite a like formation by young men from La Salle Academy. BISHOP McVinney, accompanied by Father Peyton, met all the religious teachers of the diocese to formulate plans for the coming crusade. Detailed outlines, suggestions for classroom projects, sound films were made available for teacher participa- tion. Sodality Board members acted as hostesses to the honored guests and religious teachers. D1 41 4 , His Excellency, the Most Reverend Russel J. Mc- Vinney, D.D., Bishop of Providence, heads the Advisory Board of the Academy. Sister Mary Concepta, R.S.M., head of the secretarial department, also directs the school's placement bureau. Under Leaders With full recognition of the importance of training young women to till their places as citizens of two worlds, that of Heaven and of earth, the faculty of Saint Xavier's Academy aims at educating the whole person. They work unceasingly for the betterment of each individual. Considering Christian teaching paramount, the religious strives to carry out a program necessarily broader than that found in secular education. The curriculum calls not only for intellectual development through study, for the training of character through clubs and social events, but also for spiritual development through the ap- plication of Christian principles to daily living. Their cur- riculum consists of religion, English, French, geometry, and either Latin, world history or Ger- man. They take an active part in the glee club, dramatics, orchestral work, Xavier and Xavier- ette staffs, and World Aftairs Forum. Also homeroomed in Academy Hall are forty-two members of Junior Two and nineteen of Junior Three. Their curriculum differs from that of the classical group in that they take either physics or world history instead of Latin or Ger- man. For the i953 Sodality Board, members are chosen from these iunior divisions. MARGARET LeBEAU and Lois Hebert, both of Junior Three, study earn- estly a slide film on Safety in the Laboratory . lt discloses the in- correct thing done in laboratories and the remedial measures to take. Following a secretarial course, the girls study religion, English, Spanish, shorthand, and typing. The students taking bookkeeping or clerical courses find that their courses difter from the secretarial course in that they have bookkeeping or filing in- stead of shorthand. They participate in the glee club, dramatics, orchestra, and belong to the Xavier and Xavierette staffs. Highlighting their so- cial events is the Junior Prom. WITH THE helpful typing chart near at hand, Marie Hurlburt, Florence Agnew, and Barbara Levesque, all of Junior Four, in their first year as typists, hope to improve their speed and skill by watching this typing demonstration, given to aid students in the commercial department. Coming from various iunior high schools throughout the state, they gradually intermingled with veteran freshmen. By studying the handbook from cover to cover, they quickly learned the rules and regulations of the school. Thus, solving many of their mystifiecl questions, they adjusted themselves to the activities of the school. Since the blue-ribboned sophs are preparing for college, their schedule consists of Latin, litera- ture, religion, French grammar, and biology. Y ,au Creative Geniu With human rights as their theme, the crea- tive writing students published the Cupola, a magazine filled with original stories, interviews, and other articles planned to interest teenagers. To broaden the Cupola's scope, several high schools were invited to submit articles for pub- lication. Included under the editorship of Joanne L. Egan were Margaret McCabe, Geraldine Weicker, Barbara Martinelli, Virginia Boisvert, Ann Murphy, Carol Coombs, Cherubina Di Donato, Kathleen Mercurio, Dolores Harten, Joan Connelly, Carol Cooney, Janice Wright, Mary Carpenter, Ann Cassidy, Joan Langhorn, Nancy Quinton, Alice Larsen, Joan Cairns, and Stella Giammasi. The staff learned about reader ap- peal, character motivation, dialogue, and descrip- tion. IN THE Xavierette room, Janice Wright and Cherubina DiDonato, both of Senior One, help with the circulation of the Cupola by filing notes, speeches, and blanks. Speeches are later circulated to each classroom to be given by the president. BEING SPECIFIC is a must, declares Margaret Mary McKay, as she and Dolores Harten, both members of the senior creative writing class, review the rules of sense impressions in preparation for writing their articles and short stories for the Cupola. At Work ART EDITOR, Colette Geffroy of Senior One, shows a sketch to a fellow classmate, Joanne Egan. Joanne, also a talented and prospective artist and a member of the Art Club, watches with interest. Both girls illustrated the 1952 Cupola. Science Assails Seniors Under the direction of Sister Mary Rosalia, R.S.M., A.B., the science department strives to acquaint its students with the new scientific de- velopments of our era. The department includes courses in biology, physics, and chemistry which are designed to meet the requirements of colleges and nursing schools. To supplement daily classes and lectures, a laboratory period is interwoven into the class- room work. The purpose of this is to arouse in the student scientific curiosity and interest. Such experiments as electrolysis of water, distillation of water, and tests for debquescent and effic- rescent substances not only prove laws and theories taught, but also provoke in the student serious thought and observation. As an extra-curricular activity for the scien- tifically minded, a science club is organized each year. The object of this club is to stimulate inter- est in science and to apply this knowledge to daily life. During the informal meetings, a dem- onstration or a movie aids the pupils in acquiring a broader outlook on the subject in discussion. To climax the entire science program, the students enter proiects in the annual science fair sponsored by the Providence Journal. At this time S. X. A. students have definitely exhibited scientific knowledge and thinking. Because of their scientific thought, originality, thoroughness, and technical skill, these girls have ranked high among other secondary schools. In 1951, nine first grants, thirty-one second grants, and seven- teen third grants were achieved. QQ, ,uh g L51 1522 i' 'C n 1 9 Tyne, x '-ll 3 -. . 3 A u B I 1. Four complete kitchen units were donated to the department by the Marian Motherhood Assembly as its centennial gift to the academy. By their spacious counters of red, gray, green, und blue, the units are made distinguish- able. Each counter consists of a built-in-bread board, roomy drawers, and cupboards which are fully equipped with cooking utensils. Facilities in each kitchen are composed of a white enamel gas stove and modern porcelain sink. Two refrigera- tors service the entire kitchen. Monday and Tuesday afternoons at 2:45, the kitchen becomes a beehive of activity . Students concentrate mainly on the element of practice. This includes the care of the stove and other facilities, use of utensils, kitchen planning, food selection, preparation, and service. Emphasis is placed on calisthenics, marching, relays, and games. Square dancing to the accompaniment of records plays a prominent part in the gym classes. Each class has a basketball team, and after a series of round-robin games, the winners receive the school basketball shield for the year. As the culmination of gym classes, all girls par- ticipate in Play Day at the end of the year. St. Xavier's takes care of the physical as well as the mental and spiritual welfare of the student. Under the supervision of Dr. Phyllis Meola, Miss O'Neill, R.N., and Mrs. Ralph Pari, the health program helps to keep all girls in top physical condition. ln accordance with this pro- gram, each student receives a periodic medical examination. Forty-four seniors in the Ave Maria Choristers blend their musical talents during assemblies for entertaining the student body and the public. In observance of Mother Provincial's feast day, the Ave Maria Choristers initiated the year on November 13. They sang My Rosary and Dream of Summer, an adaptation of the Merry Widow Waltz under the direction of Sis- ter Mary Emily, R.S.M. Their renditions of Noel , Silent Night , and other traditional Christmas carols added to the holiday spirit at the Christ- mas assembly. The Glee Club sang on the City Hall steps during Christmas week and entertained at the Veteran's Hospital, Davis Park. .yt I SIXTY-NlNE iuniors belong to the Glee Club. They learn the fundamentals of musical harmony in preparation for the senior Ave Maria Choristers. As iuniors, some of them sing at assemblies and many receive a part in the chorus of the operetta. Tape recordings of the March program for the alumnae were heard on the radio for a sav' ings bond program. As a culmination of the year's work, the annual operetta proved to be a memorable piece of work. All proceeds went to the Catholic Charities Fund in the name of the school. On World Sodality Day and Mary's Day, both performances were an inspiration. After entertaining on Parent's Night, their voices echoed for the last time in the auditorium on Commencement Day.
