through Mary To Jesus As a linal tribute, we the Senior class have dedicated our year book to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, not only in memory of our final year at this Academy, but in the hope that by keep- ing it in the home. it will be a means of draw- ing people closer to the Sacred Heart. Each Xavierite should consider herself a cell of Catholic Action, working in union with others for the betterment of Catholics all over the world. But our Lord will never be outdone in generosity, for with His promises made to Saint Margaret Mary for those who honor His Sacred Heart, we are assured of many spiritual rewards, both on this earth and in heaven. HI will give them all the graces necessary in their state in life. I will establish peace in their houses. I will comfort them in all their afllictions. I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death. I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings. Sinners shall hnd in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy. Tepid souls shall grow fervent. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection. I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted Ollt. I promise thee in excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Fri- day in nine consecutive months tl1e grace of linal penitenceg they shall not die in My dis- grace nor without receiving their sacramentsg My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. However this movement has not been in- troduced solely to adults. Here at Saint Xavier's, owing largely to the suggestion of the Rev. jolm P. Delaney, at the Day of Recollection held last june, each student was introduced to this devotion at the last assem- bly of the year, wherein the Rev. joseph Deg- nan, Chaplain, consecrated the school to the Sacred Heart, in the hope that they would augment the already increasing interest in the reign of Christ as Head of the family. Early in September, soon after the com- mencement of classes, the beautiful ceremony of Enthronement of the Sacred Heart as patron of Saint Xavier's was held, thereby launching Xavierites upon an important aspect of their spiritual life for this year. The Reverend Francis Larkin, CC., celebrated Mass after which the pictures and images of the Sacred Heart were blessed and placed in their respec- tive classrooms. Father then spoke briefly concerning the importance of having the Sacred Heart enthroned in all schools and homes. This was followed by the formal en- thronement of a large statue of the Sacred Heart in the main corridor of Academy Hall by Father Larkin as the students sang the hymn Heart of jesus , after which a proces- sion of the entire student body hled to the beautiful garden shrine on the campus. Here before the huge image of the Sacred Heart, the girls recited the Act of Consecration, which was followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Our Most Reverend Bishop gra- ciously granted permission for solemn Bene- diction in the Sacred Heart Garden enclosure. During the same visit, Father gave an urg- ent plea for Night Adorers to the Sacred Heart in the home. This appeaf, also fostered by Father Mateo, was to generous Xavierites who would spend one nocturnal hour each month in reparation for the crimes committed against the home. The response to this appeal was admirable, and has with succeeding months increased, until at the present time there are over seven hundred students sacrificing an hour of sleep each month, or in some cases every week, to make reparation for the sins being committed constantly all around them. A wonderful aid in the spending of this hour of adoration to the best spiritual advantage possible is the Holy Hour booklet, Night Adoration in the Home , by Father Mateo. lt contains meditations and prayers which, though simple, are lll0St beautiful and inspir- mg. As a refresher of interest and enthusiasm after the long Christmas vacation, all Night Adorers participated in a Solemn Holy Hour on the first Friday of january. The Reverend Edward L. Murphy of the Society of jesus, professor of Sacred Eloquence and Doginatic Theology at Wleston College, Mass., ofliciated. Father divided his hour into two parts, the first address presented a vivid description of the Agony in the Garden and portraying Christ as The Broken-Hearted Son of God so heavily laden with the sins of men. Be- tween the conferences, the Litany of the Sacred Heart of jesus was recited, and the traditional Enthronement hymn, The Enthronement of Love was sung by the Night Adorers. ln his second talk, Father Murphy stressed the need of more priests and sisters to aid Holy Mother Church in the defeat of paganism. After a renewal of the Act of Conseeration and the singing of the hymn to the Sacred Heart, the Holy Hour was terminated with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. ln addition to the excellent guidance given by various priests on the matter of devotion to the Sacred Heart, the students themselves were important factors in the remarkable growth of the movement these past few months. Their influence was clearly observed in bulletin board displays and in class meet- ings and discussions. The school paper, the Xrmieretlc, constantly encouraged the girls by keeping the devotion to the Sacred Heart foremost in spiritual matters, also by publiciz- ing the devotion to outsiders, the paper hopes to bring more Catholics to the knowledge of the movement. Another hope of the Xnvirfr- cite and all those connected with Saint Xavier's is that through constant publicity the Sacred Heart radio program, which is heard practical- ly all over the country, will soon be brought to Providence.
