His Excellency MOST REV. FRANCIS P. KEOUGH. D.D. Bishop of Providence EDITED BY THE GRADUATING CLASS OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER ACADEMY SISTERS OF MERCY. PROVIDENCE. R. I. FOREWORD With the banners of “Truth” flying high, we, the Class of 1940, have chosen our class motto, “The Truth shall make you free,” as a theme for the twenty-fourth edition of The Xavier. At the outset, we sincerely hope that our Annual will effect the true pur- pose for which it was compiled: to store happy high school memories for ourselves; to be a source of information for our parents, bene- factors, and friends; and to remind us of our mission to disseminate the truth of Christ to those whom we meet on the journey from earth to Heaven. If The XAVIER can but be a stimulus to urge us on to the splendid things we can accomplish as Catholic Action- ists. the work of the editors and of those who so generously co-operated with them shall not have been in vain. —Margaret Howell, Editor. Dillon. The passing of time will serve only to embellish the memories of the years spent under his guidance. The value of his spiritual advice will not be manifest, perhaps, until we reach a crossroad in Life. But we all re- alize that Father has been to us a dispenser of that “truth that will make you free” in his capacity as Spiritual Director, Sodality Modera- tor. Teacher of Apologetics, and Di- rector of our Study Clubs. —Margaret Sullivan REV. GERALD F. EDITORIAL STAFF Editor-in-Chief_________________MARGARET SULLIVAN Assistant Editors_ROSEMARY GOULDING, GRACE MULCAHEY, OLGA LUSI, BETTY DOYLE, KATHRYN REARDON YOUTH SPEAKS! “Dauntlessly on wc swing . . Yes. that’s it—dauntless- ly! Nothing can stop us now! We have groomed our wings: we aided and were aided in their growth. Now we will soar higher and higher until we reach the pinnacle, success. We are impetuous, rebellious, arrogant, but most of all we are confident! We trust!—first of all in God and secondly in ourselves through God. We have been picked from the gnarled ancient tree of learning—glistening products not blighted by the pessimists of our day. All you have been reading about—it is not we. We re still the same as we always were. We are going to con- quer this world!—our world! These embittered cynics are not. thank God. representatives of the youth of the age. They represent the twisted minds of the day—minds, tortured by so many philosophies, the brain children of (pardon me) the numerous crack-pot free thinkers. Political—Economic ob- stacles—we never heard of these, they are merely the phraseology of our more glib-tongued friends. We guess we can take in our stride a few juts in the road. Wc can overtake them because our steps are not hesitant, not unsure and doubtful. Rather they are quick, sure and have all the confidence of youth. Do you wonder why this is? It is because the way will be so well lighted with the Light of the Redemption. There will be one shadow stretched across our path, but it will be one in which we shall labor, and willingly and cheer fully work for. that heart-rendering yet glorious shadow of the Cross. In this future alone does Youth hope and trust! WISDOM VS. SELFISHNESS The startling fact that the young Catholics of America could have their country converted in four years is enough to make the most blase cynic open his eyes and take notice. The only one who doesn't comprehend the importance of that dis- covery is young Catholic America itself. Perhaps the fad for languid glamour girls and indifferent men about town has slightly darkened their perspective, but youth’s perspective is easily changed, swayed, turned in the direction of the right or wrong cause. It needs an awakening to the truth that grey- haired men and disillusioned centenarians are not the salvation of America. Eager-eyed youngsters who know their religion and their country will make the ideal of Catholic Action a living, practical, all important fact. Don't let them tell you to take life easy. Arm chair con- tenders in the great struggle will advise you that the line of least resistance is the wisest course: your conscience will tell you it is the selfish course. A group of young people who hold the secret of their happiness, of life eternal, have an urgent duty to give that secret to their neighbor. The next four or five years will see this class of high school graduates already on the Road of Life to their ultimate des- tination. Whether they bring anyone with them on the right road, depends entirely on themselves. They can make America a Utopia. Will they do it? DAUNTLESSLY ON—! GLEE CLUB MARKS EVENTFUL YEAR The Ave Maria Choristers made their debut this year at the annual I. F. C. A. meeting, which was held October 30, 1939. Following this wonderful display of vocal talent, the Christmas program, consisting of the oft-repeated but ever- inspiring story of Christ’s Na- tivity was presented. On March 10. 1940. they sang a beautiful and inspiring finale to the Lenten play, the Hallelu- jah Chorus. As the crowning point of all their efforts, they presented the Indian lyric drama. “Sea- wana.” This beautiful oper- etta had for its setting a for- est glade near a Mohawk vil- lage in what is now New York SR. CLASSIC GUILD AGAIN APPEARS The Classic Guild entertained the student body early in Feb- ruary with its presentation of Shakespeare’s immortal “Mer- chant of Venice.” Stanley Cobleigh’s excellent portrayal of Shylock proved to be the highlight of the pUy. Portia’s mercy speech was sin- cere and appealing, with Miss Joan Beckwith taking the part of the popular heroine. Gray Carpenter, who played the role of Bassanio, Portia's lover, marked his second appearance at the Academy with Mr. Cob- leigh and Miss Beckwith. The Guild Players did not present the classic in its en- tirety. but chose scenes for their high dramatic power and com- edy appeal. THE XAVIERETTE BE YE NOT HEARERS ONLY OF THE WORD, BUT DOERS! FATHER CURRAN GIVES ADDRESS Reverend Doctor Edward Lodge Curran, noted speaker and apologist, lectured at St. Xavier's Auditorium in com- memoration of National Educa tion Week on November 13. 1939. Reverend Doctor Curran is the Editor-in-Chief of the offi- cial magazine of the Interna tional Catholic Truth Society. A Catholic Radio Representa- tive for the Diocese of Brook- lyn and speaker on the Cath olic Hour. a weekly broad- cast. Father Curran's oratori- cal ability has brought him into contact with every part of the country. For his subject. Father chose 'Militant Catholocism,” one which brought many interest- ing and vital points before our eyes. One of the many im- pressive comparisons was in- cluded in the statement that we are all Madonnas guarding the reputation of the Church in our arms just as Mary guarded the Christ Child. NOTED ACTIONIST CALLS CATHOLIC ACTION A COMMAND OF GOD! Paul McGuire, noted jour- nalist and novelist, addressed the entire student body in St. Xavier’s auditorium on March 7. Mr. McGuire was educated by the Christian Brothers at the University of Adelaide. He has been foreign correspondent to numerous publications in REMEMBER — I AM THE CHURCH! FATHERS McVINNEY LEAD RETREAT, Reverend Russell McVinney of the Cathedral Parish con ducted the annual retreat this year at St Xavier's Academy. His conferences proved to be both interesting and instructive. Father McVinney's talks most- ly concerned sin and prayer. He said that the world was a battlefield with sin as the enemy that we Christians were constantly fighting. Father ad vised that Catholic youth could best conquer sin by reso lute prayer. Petitions to God and the saints in Heaven are the most powerful weapons that we can use. Father McVinney left with the stu dents three principles, which, if we practice, will aid us in our future life. These principles were purity, prayer and loy- alty to our faith. BARONESS VIEWS POWER POLITICS A woman who escaped from Danzig only two days before the bombs began to fall and the German planes swooped down upon the Polish Corri- dor. visited the halls of St. Xavier’s on November 24. Newport, addressed the Seniors on their Day of Rec- ollection. Father gave the graduating class much food for thought when he spoke to them concerning their fu- ture life. scattered parts of the world. Those who listened to this cos- mopolitan Catholic actionist were quickened in their Catho- lic Action spirit because one of the laity was telling the laity the practicability of the movement. The substance of Mr. McGuire's speech was: Catholic Action is essentially an apostolate. Its business is to convert the world. To con- vert the world we must con- vert men. And that means for each of us that we must try to convert the men we know. Will You — be a lay leader in the near future? CATHOLIC ACTION . . . THE THING OF THE MOMENT! NOTED LAYWOMAN LECTURES HERE In May, 1940, the stu- dent body of Saint Xavier’s had the pleasure of attending a lecture given by Mrs. Elizabeth Marable Brennan. LL.D.. wife of the former Supreme Court Justice Philip A. Brennan. Mrs. Brennan is renowned for her outstanding work as a Catholic Actionist. as former President of the I. F. C. A. and as a social worker for 40 years in Brooklyn. The audience, need- less to say. found Mrs. Bren nan’s lecture both enjoyable and informative. VOCATION WEEK OFFERS VARIETY This year’s Vocation Week. | from March 10-15, outdid all previous ones in regard to variety. As an opening exercise we witnessed, on Sunday evening, the very colorful passion play, For He Had Great Posses- sions. The major roles were portrayed by the Misses Mar- jorie Lally, Dorothy Mc- Gwynn. Rita McNealy. Mary Grace Carroll. Mary Moriarty. Rose Mary Canning. Margue- rite Flynn, and Valerie Dev- ereaux. Monday, we heard a very fine lecture on the Religious Vocation, by the Reverend James T. McKenna. O.P.. a professor of liturgy at Provi- dence College. Much mission- ary zeal was stirred in the hearts of our sodalists. when on Tues- day we attended a lecture given by Father Loftus. a Columban Father from Bristol. His ex- periences in his ten years of labor in China, added interest and color to his talk. On Wednesday morning. Sis- ter M. Paul, a Sister of St. Francis, and Superintendent of nurses at St. Joseph’s Hospital, extended very valuable, first hand information concerning the nursing profession. A very colorful program, under the title of Home- maker’s Day took place on Thursday. In a fashion show, the Mater Admirabilis Sewing Club displayed and modeled their own handicraft. Among those modelling were Cather- ine Riley, Mary Flanagan. Anne Pierce, Rita McConnell, Marguerite O'Rourke. Claire La Chance, and many others. The usual Open Forum was offered by the Seniors on Fri- day. Reverend Joseph Degnan conducted the Question Box. to which the members of va- rious classes had submitted que- ries. He also distributed prizes for Vocation Week Poster Con- test. The subjects discussed were. Choosing a Career — Louise Sullivan. Is God Calling You? — Margaret Goforth. A Woman's Place in the Home —Gloria De Sisto. Doing God’s Will Bring’s Happiness —Vera Vose. P. C. PROFESSOR LECTURES HERE Dr. O’Neill, professor of English at Providence College, and noted man of letters, lec- tured at St. Xavier’s in April. This was not his first appear- ance before a group of earnest Xavicrites. Once, two years previous, he had completely charmed his feminine audience with his interesting lecture on books. His literary credoes are well known to every Xavi- erite. Dr. O'Neill is the noted author of that unusual Book About Books. which is an informative discussion on the merits and demerits of the types of literature. IN SYMPATHY We offer our sincere sym- pathy to all those who will weep when we have gone! THE XAVIERETTE OUR DAYS... It was a thrill for Miss Senior to walk proudly into the first floor of the new build- ing in September and realize that this was her year to reign supreme as Queen of the Red Bow. A year of fun. frolic, and frenzied study loomed ahead, but most of all a year that spelled excitement after three years of hopeful expecta- tion. Notwithstanding this. Rita Tefft expressed some regret at the passing of an unforgetable summer; the mysteries of Bi- ology finally claimed her in- terest. however. . . . The com- mercial girls were immediately initiated into the art of keep- ing time to shorthand records instead of Glenn Miller's latest swing contribution. It was worth the effort to see the us- ual uniform-dad misses wear- ing billowy gowns, and wear- ing with a grace. . . . That was the highlight of the year, but there were still more ex- citing moments after the fading corsages had been laid to rest. Rita Haley and Madeline Wold spent many an anxious mo- ment deciding which was the most becoming coiffure for their photographs. . . . Mary Min- nie” Wyatt. Mary Flanagan, and Bertha McCusker gave Senior II a practical example of the modern terpsichorean art to relieve the tension of school work. The approach of Commence- ment brings a note of regret when we realize that we will no longer see these familiar sights: Mary Holden and Mary Hogan identifying themselves by spell- ing their names: Kay Mc- Queeny giving an animated ac- count of what happened Last Night; Ruth Hermann clearing her vocal chords preparatory to a classroom oration: Mary Da- ley upsetting the class with her (Cont'd on Col. 4) ALUMNAE BALL IS The Alumnae of St. Xav- ier's Academy held its annual Ball at the Providence Billmore Hotel on December 29. A. gym during the 1939-1940 basketball season were not unwarranted, for the much-coveted shield was the object of the Contest—and we do mean contest! The first battle was fought between Sen- iors and Juniors from which the Seniors emerged victorious with a close score but the first lap of the race accomplished. On January 31. 1940 the race was resumed when Seniors met Sophs who literally mowed ’em down” by a one point score. The Sophomores marched onward to meet the Junior team on March 6. The game ended with the Juniors victo- rious and went on to meet the Seniors in April’s final victory. Rhode Island School of Pharmacy and the Rumford Chemical Works. The speakers for the year have been Mr. Thomas D'Am- ico—At the Antarctic with Byrd (Second mate—Byrd’s second expedition). Mr. Edward Hale—Safety and Economy of Aviation (Manager Narragansett Avia- tion Service). Mr. John Maguire—f inger Printing (Superintendent of Criminal Investigation). The Club is affiliated with the American Institute of the City of New York and with the Student Science Clubs of America. DR. PAUL FURFEY TALKS SOCIOLOGY The Reverend Paul Hanly Furfey. eminent author, edu- cator. organizer, and sociolo- gist. was the honored guest of St. Xavier's on April 29. Dr. Furfey is a member of the fac- ulty of the Catholic University of Washington, which is num- bered among this country’s largest Catholic educational centers. He is the acting head of the Sociology Department at the Catholic University, a member of the faculty of the National Catholic School of Social Science and he ranks prominently in the Catholic Youth movement throughout the country. His talk on Problems of the Adolescent” was well received. OUR DAYS . . . (Cont’d from Col. 1 ) infectious giggle: Catherine Riley demonstrating her agility by walking on all fours; The- rese Breckel amusing her neigh- bors with caricatures. . . . Most of all we hate to leave the campus, the classrooms, the sisters, the crowded locker rooms, the real friendships, and everything that has spelled S. X. A. to us for four years. The Sodality Bell SODALITY BELL CELEBRATES ITS THIRD BIRTHDAY The Bell has completed its third year of services to S. X. A. Sodalists. It plays such an important part in the life of every St. Xavier’s student. Its cheerful and colorful appearance at- tracts as a magnet would. May the Sodality Bell continue to entertain and aid the girls spiritually for many years to come. Editors of this section. Marjorie Lally. Gloria De Sisto Margaret Goforth. MARGARET MlMNAUGH. SOCIALS FOR THE MISSIONS The mission zeal of St. Xavier students is clearly manifested by the willing way in which they cooperate in all mission ac- tivities. Mission socials are attended by all. Johnny Mite Box is kept filled, and large amounts of stamps and tinfoil are col- lected. THE POOR YOU HAVE ALWAYS Thanksgiving and Christmas were made much happier for some poor families who were the recipients of well-filled bas- kets. Besides filling grocery baskets, active Sodalists sent candy to the institutions. THE CHARACTER BUILDER In September every class room received a Character Tower which was to be built by aspirations. Now. at the close of another year, the structures have been completed. Thousands of ejaculations have been recorded in the “Sodality Bell” each month. The Holy Souls will be eternally grateful to you! QUEEN'S WORK The Queen's Work is under the protection of Our Ladies mantle. Therein lies the secret of its success. The Sodalists of S. X. A. are indebted to this monthly publication for the spiritual aid and enjoyment that it has given them. IN RETROSPECT It has been a successful sodality year, we think we may safely conclude. Activities? There have been many. From the Freshman Welcome through all the Mission socials, the dra- matic debuts, the lectures and lecturers, the work we’ve done in our parishes, the cooperation with the Press Crusade and Charity Drive and our answering of questionnaires, collecting of stamps, tinfoil, saying aspirations to the final activities of World-Wide Sodality Day and Commencement Week, we’ve kept our breath through it all. Now comes summer, vacation and farewell. But that's not the end! No. it’s just the begin- ning. your beginning to put into laboratory practise the things the Sodality has taught you. Are we going to see future Catholic Action groups flourishing because you’ve learned the truth of Ad Jesum per Mariam? NOTE OF THANKS We are indeed grateful to the Reverend RICHARD L. ROONEY. S.J.. for his splendid talks to us in preparation for World-Wide Sodality Day. AD JESUM PER MARIAM MONTHLY SPIRITUAL MEETINGS On the First Friday of each month the students of St. Xavier’s filed into their auditorium and witnessed a very well-planned and inspirational meeting—their Sodality Meeting. Various activities were carried on each month according to feasts and holidays which were to be celebrated. The S. X. A. Sodality will live on. in our homes, in our parishes, and in our future lives because these memorable meetings instilled Catholic Action into our hearts! STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MERCY DAY PILGRIMAGE The colorful pageantry of our Mercy Day Pilgrimage will long linger in our memories. Before an altar decorated in white gladiolas and a shrine of Our Biassed Mother alight with myriad candles, each girl offered a red rose, symbolic of the love she bore her Queen. The singing of “Loved Mother” echoed a few minutes later by the seven hundred voices in a solemn Act of Consecration preceded by a talk from Father Dillon, in which he bade farewell to the work which for so many years he has conducted here. FRESHMEN ARE GUESTS OF SENIOR SISTERS Do you remember the welcome party that was conferred in honor of the Freshmen? How each Freshman was escorted to her seat and entertained by two Seniors—our Prefect's ad- dress of welcome—the community sing— the conclusion of the party as the strains of our “Alma Mater” echoed through- out the gymnasium? La veillc de Paques ils se couchent de bonne heure mais ils ne s'endorment pas. Ils restent vigilants pour essayer de voir le lapin blanc.
