We have endeavored by means ot pic- torial and written retrospection to record all out- standing events ot the past year. The students, their scholastic programs, and social activities are presented here. Previous editions have con- tained teatures which we have omitted. ln place of these an innovation has been substi- tuted- The Xavieretteu section, For the Seniors this book has a distinct personal appeal, lt vvill serve as a vvell from vvhich may be dravvn mem- ories ot friends and teachers in ioytul or poignant clarity. Dedicated this year to the Alumnae, vve sincerely hope that in The Xavier l939 they vvill tind a means tor happy reflection. lvlary A. In our country, there is a very definite resurgence now of Catholic thought and Cath- ofic life. It will grow It will be the world's vital force, its only life-giving force. It will be that because it is the work of the Holy Spirit-the Spirit that renews the face of the earth Let us remember our great privilege. We are young now, now when our youth can achieve great things for Christ, our Leader. We are Catholics now, now when no true Catholic can be medi- ocre. We can sacrifice now, when sacrifice is so much needed. As part of the Mystical Body we partake of the very life of Christ, Christ, the Life of the World. Our great mission is to help others to share more fully in that Life. Madeline Galvin, Helen Harring- ton, Marjorie Healey, Louise Heaney, Frances Cardoza, Mar- garet Conley. Doris Hodde, Ann E. BASKETBALL YEAR VERY ACTIVE The girls who are members of the basketball club know that it holds a certain satisfaction un- known to other organizations. Membership in this club means fair-play, sportsmanship, and con- sideration of your fe'lowman. Through association on the bas- ketball court, many girls have found character building a some- what easier task. An outstanding event in the basketball year was the tourna- ment for the shield, This con- test was held between the Senior and Junior teams. It was a two out of three games series, from which the Seniors emerged tri- umphant with a hard earned vic- tory. The Class of '39 who com- posed a great team are the Misses Gertrude Baron, Marie Laudati, Mary Taber, Mary Barrett, Adri- enne Brule, Mary Flynn, Gertrude Keenan, Helen Lynch, lrene Row- ley, Florence Courtois, Florence Darby, Mary Bizon, Madeline Boylan, Mary Coyne, Dorothy Dunn, Inez O'Rourke, Anna Mac- Dermott, Helen McManus, and Rita Mulligan. From the Senior and Junior ranks were chosen the varsity team. Senior members on this team are the Misses Mary Taber, Mary Barrett, Mary Flynn, Ger- trude Keenan, Helen Lynch, lrene Rowley, Florence Darby, Mary Bizon, Madeline Boylan, Mary Coyne, Inez O'Rourke, Anna Mc- Dermott, and Rita Mulligan. SODALITY RECEIVES BlSHOP'S BLESSING AND KIND APPROVAL R. I. S. P. A. Is Attended by Young Writers The annual Fall conference of the Rhode Island Scholastic Press Association was held at the Cen- tral Junior High School in East Providence. At the opening meeting, held from 2200 until 3200, Miss Helen McCarthy, president of the Association, in- troduced various speakers, Out- standing among these was Bill Cunningham, well-known sports writer for the Boston Post. Mr. Cunningham gave several valuable points for prospective journalists as well as highlighting sports events. Divisional meetings were at- tended by the Misses Rita War- burton, Helen Lvnch, Florence Darby, and Mary Allen who rep- resented St. Xavier's. A news- paper clinic, photography in rela- tion to school publications, and lectures on radio and yearbooks, proved to be both enjoyable and profitable. A student get-to- gether concluded the meeting, BISHOP KEOUGH LAUDS CRUSADE St. Xavier's Does Share in Cam- paign for Visitor The Catholic Press Crusade, conducted among diocesan schools February I3-23, was instituted by our Bishop for the purpose of spreading Catholic literature and counteracting anti-Catholic prop- agancla. St. Xavier's was active in the campaign as each girl en- deavored to secure at least one subscription to the Providence Visitor. Interest was roused by contests, skits and open forum discussions. Due largely to the magnificent work of the Sopho- more class, St. Xavier's was up to standard in the rating given in the Visitor, The Most Rever- end Bishop was highly gratified with the crusade results, l IN SYMPATHY l' The Class of '39 offers heartfelt sympathy to all who weep when they have gone. Adieul Desirous of All Being Active in Parishes You have my whole-hearted approval and most sincere bless- ing on your Sodality and its ac- tivities, said Most Reverend Francis P. Keough, Bishop of Providence, when presented with the Sodality program for the year at the Bishop's house in October. His Excellency was informed of the Sodality activities, the mission iocials, the saving of stamps and tin-foil, the missal campaign, and expressed himself as keenly in- terested in the latter since the missal aids us in concentrating our mind more directly on the divine Sacrifice by following the Mass with the priest. The Bishop earnestly desired that All Sodalists radiate devo- tion to the Blessed Virgin and in their individual parishes have ac- tive Sodalities. You must act as disciples in this worthy cause. With the splendid training ob- tained at St. Xavier's, that is guite possible and it is my wish that you do so. The Sodality should be to us something tangi- ble, something to love. Our Bishop kindly granted the interviewers the privilege of praying in his private chapel where everything bespeaks love and devotion to Almighty God. SANCTlTY PROVES EMINENT SUCCESS Large Cast, Costuming Make Drama Year's Highlight The culmination of long weeks of intense rehearsal was the pre- sentation of Sanctity an heroic drama by Violet Clifton on Sun- day evening, March l2. The pro- duction was given by the Rosa Mystica Players in collaberation with the Ave Maria Choristers and the Orchestra. The story of the play is based entirely on the life of Princess Elizabeth of Hun- gary and her great love for Duke Lewis of Thuringia. The large cast, appropriate costuming, care- ful lighting effects, and interpra- tive dancing did much to make Sanctity a great social, finan- cial, and artistic success. THE XAVIERETTE Edited Monthly By the Students of ST. FRANCIS XAVIER'S ACADEMY Providence, R. I. Editor .........................................................,..........................................,.....,.... MARY ALLEN, '39 Assistant Editors ........s... ELEANOR LowisiEv, '39, HELEN LYNCH, '39 Rita wx-xaauiarou, '39, MARY coYixiE, '39 WELCOME TO PIUS XII It was indeed fitting that Pius should be followed by Pius, peace by peace, during such times of stress. Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli clearly defined his policy of fellowship among man in his first, uni- versal message. Pius XII is a Pope of firsts-firsts which particularly endear him to the democratic American people. He is the first prelate ever to have visited the United States, the first to be a guest of the Presi- dent, to ride in an airplane, to have his election announced by radio. His graciousness and sanctity were potent factors in securing the affections of those who were to become his children, The world is cognizant of his firm stand in defense of the rights and freedom of man. He has brought to the papacy great qualities of statesmanship, scholarship, and diplomacy. Pope Pius Xl recognized his intrinsic abilities and the papal state flourished under his ad- ministration as Secretary of State. He, who was to become Pastor Angelicus was considered the ideal spiritual and political representa- tive by his predecessor, His depth of experience rendered him capable of dealing with both ruler and ruled and his stand against Fascism, Nazism, and Communism was well-known. By virtue of such a broad horizon and progressiveness, he who had never been pastor was the one shepherd for an uneasy flock. Catholics needed him, the world needed him, for he understood its bewilderment. God in his ever limitless generosity has surpassed Himself in sending such a leader for His Church, Immediately be- fore his election, a rainbow stretched across the sky, truly a promise of an epochal reign. AND THE PATHS ARE WIDE We who are about to graduate are wondering, and we have just cause for our wonderment. We have been trained mentally, morally, and socially to qualify as members of society-to keep up with the world. And what exactly has the world to offer us? We give to it our youth, inexperienced but ready to be molded to its desires and needs. We have a right to expect something in return, but, unfortu- nately, we face a land of streamlined opportunities, passing so swiftly that it is difficult to grasp them. We can appreciate the hits and errors of former generations, but we like to consider our- selves wise in our generation. Are we wise enough to work tirelessly patiently for ideals, as theoretical education is left behind and practical begins? A A great many people believe that we are over-privileged with advanced education and the pleasures which are only natural to They do not seem to realize that every minute bit of knowledge enjoyment stored away during our high school days makes for better outlooks on life and better tomorrows. Graduation day has an infinitely greater significance than merely a cap, a gown and diploma. Together with our personal manifest destiny, the prevention of the moral, political, and economic degen- eration of the country rests with us as today's graduates. Youth is the time when fires are built beneath ambition. We must prove to ourselves and to others that, although no Utopia, life was never like this. and the the us. and Our Mission . . . To restore all things in Christ! PLAY DAY SHOWS GIRLS GYMNASTS Graduating Class Are Guests of Undergraduates Every week throughout the school year, gymnasium classes are held for the students under the direction of Mrs. Jackson. The classes are varied and con- sist of marching, drills, games, and dances. At the end of the year, at the close of these classes, the tradi- tional Play Day is held. On this day, the Seniors are guests of the undergraduates while they pre- sent their program. Winners of the different contests receive awards, and members of the bas- ketball club receive their let- ters. The highlight of the day comes at the close of the program when the shield is presented to the winning class in basketball. The shield was won this year by the Seniors in a two of three game series. - - ... REMEMBER- To restore all things in Christ was your class motto. VOCATION WEEK OFFERS PROGRAMS Speakers, Contests, Open Forum Are Many Features National Vocation Week opened with the production of Sanc- tity, a medieval heroic drama, Posters were displayed throughout the school dealing with the subject of vocations and prizes were awarded for the best poster in the various groupings. Eminently qualified speakers, the Rev. J. F. X. Murphy, S. J., of Boston Col- lege, Dre James Rockett, and Mrs, Robert F. Jones, addressed the student body on one phase of the subject in question, The Sophomores reviewed and illus- trated a pamphlet on religious IContinued on Page 6, Col. 47 SENIORS ENJOY A class of girls were busily try- ing on caps and gowns,-a curl was being put in place here and there, a tassel was carefully smoothed, and Ohl exclaimed one, l'm really going to gradu- ate! Such were the scenes when the Seniors of Saint Xavier's Academy prepared for their tra- ditional June Days, It was with a little pang of sorrow though that they remembered that it was the beginning of the end.-No more uniforms for they had been dispensed with, and would never be worn again. But no time for that now, I must hurry, or I will be late for the rehearsal. And through the days the girls passed, keenly observing every function, so that they could store it away forever among their cherished memories. The Day of Recollection opened Commencement Week. With the year's work completed, and a week of intensive activity beck- oning them, the Seniors rested a while with their Creator. The exercises were similar to the Re- treat, but realization that they would never make another Re- treat as students at Saint Xavier's, added to the solemnity of the occasion. Before they were aware of it, Class Day had dawned with a clear blue sky. In the middle of the morning the procession over the campus started, With the flags gently furling in the wind, white stream of caps and gowns filled all available paths. While the Seniors marched along sing- ing hymns, the eyes of the under- THE JUNE DAYS! classmen wistfully followed them. The whole student body stood at attention when the Blessed Virgin was crowned. When the ceremony was almost over, the girls realized that their happy high school career was end- ing in the sunny days of June, l939. GLEE CLUB HAS ANNUAL MUSICAL Little Scarlet Flower Proceeds for Charity Drive Little Scarlet Flower, a musi- cal by Monica Savory, was pre- sented by the combined enter- taining forces of the Ave Maria Choristers and Orchestra on April I7. An operetta in three acts built around Demio, a farmer, and his three daughters. The setting is at the market place. The principal roles included: Mary Gilson, Ursula Marshall, Inez O'Rourke, Elizabeth Belli- otti, Olive Robinson, Gertrude Foehr and Margaret Crook. Peas- ant dances, festival choruses, stately court dances, colorful cos- tumes, as well as a very interest- ing plot, made this activity of the club a tremendous success. As a preliminary to the Op- eretta, a bridge and whist under the auspices of the clubs took place April I2 at the Columbus Hall. The proceeds of this operetta were the schooI's donation to the Charity Drive. THE XAVIERETTE OUTSTANDING CATHOLICS Wiz HAVE MET TEACHING OUTLOOK REVIEWED BY best? Why? NOTED EDUCATOR SHARES VIEWS Fr. Cassidy, Recently in Europe, Praises Our System Reverend Doctor Thomas V. Cassidy, Superintendent of the diocesan schools of Providence, inaugurated American Education Week on Monday, November 7, by addressing the entire student body on phases of Catholic educa- tion. Education Week is observed annually and sponsored by the National Catholic Welfare Con- ference, Department of Educa- tion. Fr. Cassidy had recently re- turned from a year abroad dur- ing which time he made an ex- tensive sunfey of the educational systems in Europe. Let liberty and democracy of our schools be appreciated, said Father Cas- sidy, for those are the very qualities lacking in the European classroom. BARON ESS SH EDS DYNAMIC GLOW Catherine de Hueck Reveals Great Work to Students One of the most inspirational, interesting and educational talks of the year was that given by Baroness de Hueck on March 20. The Baroness, a former member of Russian nobility, related some of her bitter trials with the Com- munists during the Revolution, The germ of all today's prob- lems is contained in the question, 'Barabbas and Christ-whom to crucify, whom to set free? The choice is with the youth of today. The laxity and carelessness of Christians is largely responsible for the Reds, for Communists are made, not born, stated the Bar- oness. Friendship Houses, study clubs, slum recreational facilities and Negro welfare work form the ba- sis for her strong Catholic defense against Communism. Speaking of her Friendship Houses in To- ronto and New York, the Baroness said, We endeavor to become 'all things to all men,' to lead all men to Christ. The splendid work that has been done and is being done by Baroness de Hueck is a continua- tion of that begun by Christ. Whom ,M ,OU like DR. ROCKETT AS VOCATION Ain Dr. James F. Rockett, Director' of Education in Rhode lsland, was one of the noted speakers for Na- tional Vocation Week. Dr. Rock- ett, an authority on youth arid education, chose for his topic, The Teaching Profession. Dr. Rockett explained to those aspiring to the teaching profes- sion, that good scholarship and an outstanding personality are very essential. Good scholarship, in his esti- mation, does not mean the dis- play of any genius in subject mat- ter accomplishment, The posses- sion of a fine personality includes all of those traits which we so admire in anyone-patience, sym- pathy, and understanding together with all those splendid character- istics that bespeak a strong moral and ethical character. He asserted that probably the best high school course which has been found to meet the entrance requirements at the Rhode lsland College of Education is the so- called classical course which in- cludes English, Latin, Mathemat- ics, History, Modern Languages, and the Sciences. REV. O. F. DUDLE The Rev. Owen F. Dudley, fa- mous English convert and author of the Masterful Monk series of five best sellers, addressed the students on January 6. His sub- ject was, Why I am a Catholic. Born in IB82, son of an Angli- can minister, as a boy he was taught that there was some- thing strange about the Pope of Rome and the Catholic Church, Later when studying for the ministry he had his first disillu- sionment concerning the Church of England, He could not find out what he was to teach as a clergyman. There was absolutely no unity in his church. It was when he had begun to study from Catholic books that he realized the obviousness of our Can you not . . . add your name to the ever growing list of Catholic Ac- tionists? The power is within you! FR. MURPHY, S. J. ADDRESSES GIRLS Among the principal speakers for National Vocation Week, March I2-I9, was Reverend J. F. X. Murphy, S.J., noted lecturer and instructor of History at Bos- ton College. Father Murphy is renowned for his learning and great wealth of experience. Father Murphy spoke on Mary, the Mother of Vocations. The choice of his topic was both in- teresting and beneficial. In developing his topic Father urged us to pray to Mary for guid- ance and help in the choice of a state in life. Y VISITS S. X. A. faith. I was struck with the excellent ques- tioning from many of the girls, the high standard of intelligence, and upon the very close attention of the audience. It was one of the happiest afternoons l've had in the States. I am particularly fond of the high school boys and girls of America, because I find them so simple, unsophisticated and not modernized, full of thirst for knowledge and very spontane- ous. Father explained that the Chi- nese language is one of the hard- est languages to learn because it is based on different tones. For example, Father said the alphabet and the Hail Mary in Chinese. He taught us to say an idiom that the Chinese Catholics say when they meet one another. Their manners and customs seemed most amusing. A natural leader of souls, radi- ating zeal, Father Regan endeav- ored to arouse in each heart a great love for the missions. DR. D. J. O'NEILL STATES CREED Book Week, which was na- tionally observed the week of No- vember I4, I938, was inaugurated in the Academy by Dr. Daniel J. O'Neill, professor of English at Providence College. Dr. O'Neill gave ten points which he called his creed con- cerning books. One point in particular that he stressed was that we wait until a book has been out a year before reading it, Dr. O'Neill was not only inter- esting but instructive as well, and those who have been following his creed have found it most helpful. THEODORE MAYNARD, LECTURER, APPEARS IN PERSON AT S. X. A. The student body was fortunate to be addressed by that renowned poet, professor, lecturer, biog- rapher, Theodore Maynard on April 27. Mr, Maynard was born of evangelical parents in the won- derland that is India. He was a worry to his parents because of his total indifference toward things religious and the condition of his soul However, growing older, he realized that he must believe in salvation and set out to comb the world to find a reli- gion worthy of belief, During his search he traveled far and was influenced by many: the Salvation Army, evangelism of the Plymouth Brethren, Baptists, Congregation- alists, ministerial study at the Mount Hermon School in Massa- chusetts, Unitarian period in Eng- land. He was influenced but never held until his introduction to Catholicism and his subsequent conversion. , Oddly enough, politics played a part in this conversion. Working with Gilbert Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc gave opportunity for insight into their beliefs and prepared the way for his entrance into the Church. Noted periodicals published poems, and articles by Mr. May- nard. Outstanding literary lights such as Padraic Colum, Father Gillis, of the Catholic World, and Henry Mencken became his acquaintances together with Chesterton and Belloc. As a man who has traveled widely, he is in a position to give impressions of various coun- tries. The antiquity of things he reverences, therefore, it is not surprising that he criticizes youthful America. Theodore May- nard has led a colorful life and a profitable one. May brings its own special de- votion, but there is no more ten- der aspect of it than the time honored May processionsf' At St, Xavier's, each individual class makes a pilgrimage of its own at a specified time to the convent chapel where a pretty little cere- mony takes place, Each girl car- ries a flower, symbolic of the love she has for Our Lady, and lays it at l-ler feet together with her love and petitions. The Act of Consecration to Our Mother is recited by all and the familiar May hymns are sung. Perhaps, this is the devotion at our Acad- emy that leaves us with the most tender memories. Parish Sodalities . . . The Sodalities in the various parishes were well represented by St. Xavier's girls. Those who were especially active were the girls of St. Joseph's, Pawtucket. They reported on roller-skating parties, a parish paper like our own Sodality Bell and many church socials and plays. From St. Pius', Providence, we heard that they held weekly dances every Saturday night. St. Joseph's, Providence, arranged for a penny social, and St. Michael's held a Valentine dance, Amazing America . . . After the holidays on January 3, the students were given an illustrated lecture by Lieutenant Robert MacMillan. l-lis subject was Amazing America. lt was a survey of his travels around the United States. The appealing manner in which Mr. MacMillan presented his lecture was appreciated by all, During his talk he gave some amazing facts about amazing America. Providence Biltmore's Crystal Ball- room the night of December 30, the occasion being the annual St. Xavier's Alumnae Ball. Two hun- dred and fifty couples danced to the rhythmic melodies of Bill Collins' orchestra high above greater Providence. The senior class of i939 were the guests of the Alumnae. Fa- vors in the form of gold and blue crosses were given. The grand march at eleven was comprised entirely of Seniors and their es- corts led by the four class presi- dents: Eleanor Lowney, l-lelen Lynch, Mary Coyne, and Rita Warburton. The prom, which held prom- inent place in the senior spotlight, will always be remembered as the brilliant social event of their high school life. Character Tower . . . The Character Tower built up aspirations every hour, The structure is now complete! The Holy Souls will be eternally grate- ful to you! Saint Xavier's has a splendid record of tens of thousands of aspirations said during the school year. Each month the Sodality Bell published the highest scores, hence competition existed among the classes. Class Day . . . Class Day, June 7, opened with Mass celebrated by Father Dillon in the school auditorium. After Mass, the Seniors held their last assembly on the cam- pus. The Class Orator, Miss Rita Warburton, expressed the sorrow of each one of the graduates upon leaving St. Xavier's. This was followed by Benedic- tion and a talk to the seniors by their moderator, Father Dillon. The program closed with the singing of the Veni Creator, Spiritus. Pumpkin Party . . . The venerable pumpkin pro- vided the motif for the Senior Mission Social when the upper class broke faith in Hallowe'en array on October Zl. The Pumpkin Party was the first big event of the Sodality season. Prominent on the pro- gram was a fashion show which previewed the latest fall and win- ter styles. Comic costumes were also presented. Tap, toe-tap, and vocal selections by well- known Senior entertainers pro- vided additional enjoyment. Danc- ing followed the entertainment. A door prize and prizes for fea- ture dances were the main attrac- tion. A candid camera was won by Mary Grimes, a former stu- dent of the S, X. A. The committee in charge was composed of the four Senior- Class Presidents and the Sodality Officers. Valentine Social . . . The Valentine was the bright spot of the hour at the Junior social. Gay, red hearts decorated the gym, and a Queen with her attendants graced the scene in all their imperial splendor. Dancing senoritas, sopranos, crooners, intricate dance steps and lilting music added a certain touch of perfection to the fes- tivity. Novel surprises worked their way at one time or another into the program. After the main part of the entertainment was over, and the performers had again adopted their every-day roles, all the di- visions whether they be Senior, Junior, Sophomore or Freshman were invited to take part in danc- ing. The music, consisting of fox-trots, waltzes, old and familiar tunes was furnished by the Junior corps of the school orchestra. Sophomore Social . . . The Blue Slipper Frolic transported the entire school back to its nursery rhyme days on the afternoon of April i4 when the Sophomore classes did their bit in behalf of the missions. The Old Woman Who Lived in the Shoe must have been proud of her delightful family for the splendid showing they made on that occasion. Curly Locks, Little Bo Peep, Little Miss Muffet and the Marys Contrary and lamb ac- companied plus Tommy Tucker were strictly of the best nursery tradition. The dance of the tin soldiers was a rhythmic treat, also the individual dancers and vocalists. All present were unani- mously agreed that Cinderella and her Prince and their re- spective trains were a treat for the eye and ear. Freshmen Social . . . A bower of roses, garlands pink and green, sweet music, witty monologues, gay dances and finally a stately May Queen all helped to make the Freshmen Social, The Rambler Rose Re- vue a grand success. The pretty wild rose was the motif used throughout in the tickets, programs, decorations and candy vendors' headgear. Truly it was. Maytime in the gym on the afternoon of the nineteenth of May! Those who helped to prove the Freshmen are enthusiastic Mis- sioners were Mary Walsh, Shirley Flynn, Florence Bellemore, Gene- vieve Szvlin, Marie Thorpe, Rosemary Fallon, Eugenie Dursch, Claire Ferrara, Mary l-lealy, Jane Chatwin, Mary Rose Dolan, Doro- thy Dunn, Mary McElroy, Eleanor Stanford, Bernice Alarie, Rita Rainville, Rita Dorgan, lnez Kelly, Mariorie Kennedy and Margaret Reilly. That is exactly what the radio column in The Xavierette has done for us during the past year. To give us the Catholic viewpoint from the radio angle, was the aim of this column, to associate us with radio personalities from Maine to Mex- ico. ln the beginning of the year, Mary Farley explained the Pos- sibilities in Radio, the develop- ment of drama over the air. ln another issue, Agnes D'Ambra told of Ham Radio Sets and of their valuable work in distressed areas, The radio personality of Father Coughlin was analyzed by Margaret Riley. ln her column Transcribed Programs, Eliza- beth McCann explains how the technique of recording has been perfected. So through the column in The Xavierette, the students have met their friends of the ether waves. CATHOLIC VIEWS Seniors Participate in Talks on Recent Plays, Novels Books are one of man's best friends. They can either benefit or injure him. lf by reading a book he seeks the finer things in life, it has benefited him. But if after reading a book he feels otherwise, he has done himself an injury. Competition in the lives of many Saint Xavier students has added zest and interest to their varied activities, Excitement always ran high at contest time, and the poster con- test was no exception. After ex- amination of the works, specula- tion, and friendly arguments fol- lowed. Prizes and honors were announced on Thursday, March l6, A series of excellent speeches ushered in the oratorical contest. The talks that were oiven fur- nished food for thought, and were greatly appreciated. The Mary Day Contest supplied the necessary initiative to many who had an incentive to write. The requisites to enter were to write an Essay on Mary, the Mother of Mankind, Anyone who contributed to The Xavierette in the past year, was eligible to enter the Catho- lic Press Contest. All types of work were considered, whether they were news stories, editorials, radio columns, etc. Prizes were to be awarded for the best work of each type. Watch the Visi- tor this summer for awards, At intervals during the year, the girls met on the field of friendly rivalry, and enjoyed the thrill of competition. RUN BY CLUBS Professional Actors Give Scenes of Dickens, Shakespeare The Classic Guild players, who have become an annual feature at St. Xavier's, educated and en- tertained the school on Decem- ber l with their interpretation of scenes from Shakespeare. A bet- ter appreciation of the immortal bard was gained by witnessing his characters as they again trod the boards. Miss Joan Beckwith and Stanley Cobleigh presented acts from the following plays with their accustomed zest and ability: Romeo and Juliet , Richard lll , The Merchant of Venice , and The Taming of the Shrew. The Hat Shop . . . As their first offering of the season, the Senior Dramatic Club enacted a comedy by lrene Cop- ley entitled The Hat Shop on Tuesday, October ll, l938, The plot was concerned with the audacity of two high school girls in entering the exclusive hat shop of Madame Rozelle. The girls clashed wits with the rich Mrs. Spaulding and Madame which resulted in a delightful afternoon for the audience. Thursdays at Home . . . Guests of Mrs. M. Belle Lar- kins who took advantage of her Thursdays at Home provided a wealth of amusement during this comedy bit given by the Junior Dramatic Club. Agents of all sizes, shapes, and descriptions were Mrs, Larkin's phobia. Sales appeal had hilarious reactions on both sides of the footlights. Afternoon with Dickens . . . The student body spent a re- vealing Afternoon with Dick- ens February 9, when extracts from that renowned author's novels were given by Frank Speaight. Mr, Speaight is an English actor of some note, termed a great actor, an actor of the highest type by several outstanding English critics. All the romance and realism, humor and pathetic tenderness of Dickens were in- culcated in his delightful carica- tures. Minus the benefit of cos- tuming or scenery, the engross- ing Pickwick Papers were vit- alized. The Annual Retreat was held on January 26 and 27. lt was con- ducted by the Rev. Charles H. Lynch, an instructor at St. Raph- ael's Academy. Father based his talks on the seven capital sins and the seven capital virtues. He explained that when controlled, the appe- tites may lead to the seven capi- tal virtues and when freed, to the seven capital sins. The program consisted of Mass, Rosary, and Spiritual Reading, fol- lowed by a conference in which the Retreat Master addressed the girls. The Seniors really envy the class of '40 for the opportunity they have of making another re- treat. Spiritual Bouquets . . . Each S, X. A. student joined with Sodalists all over the country on December 6, 7, and 8 in making an annual triduum of Masses and Holy Communions for our late Holy Father. A spiritual bouquet was given as a Christmas gift to our mod- erator, Reverend Father Dillon. As a part of the program to welcome home Mother Provincial from Belize, the Academy pre- sented her with a spiritual bou- quet. Another bouquet was forwarded to the Mother General of the Sisters of Mercy as a remem- brance of her promised visit, MRS. R. F. JONES LECTURES HERE A former president of St. Xavier's Alumnae, Mrs. Robert F. Jones, was the speaker on Wednesday of Vocation Week. The subject of her talk was Leadership in Catholic Organ- ization. Mrs. Jones dwelt at length on the need of capable, willing Catholic women in the field of club work today. She outlined a program for the or- ganization and administration of an active society. At the end of the talk, Mrs. Jones described an audience which she had had with the late Pope Pius Xl early in the year. THE XAVIERETTE IN THE SPIRITOF THE LISTEN WORLD. . ECCLESIASTICAL YEAR bvMa'fvAIIen,'39 St. Francis Xavier... The students of St. Francis Xavier's Academy honored their great patron on December I, in preparation for the feast on De- cember 3. A Solemn High Mass was cele- brated by our moderator, Father Dillon, in the school auditorium at nine o'cIock. Members of the Senior class sang the Mass, The processional hymn was We Hail Thee, Francis Xavier. The Senior Glee Club rendered the Offertory Hymn. As a recessional march, the student body joined in The Crusade Hymn. Mother Provincial was our hon- ored guest. In her interesting talk to the girls she described her visit to Belize, British Honduras, relating the great missionary work that is being done by our Sisters of Mercy. Christmas . . . Each homeroom elected com- mittees to arrange for the cus- tomary contributions to the poor and unfortunate. Girls, happy, laughing, eager, full of the real Christmas spirit, planned for pa- per, ribbon, candy, cigarettes, yarn for knitting turkey dinners and all the fixings that completed it-all in the spirit of true So- dalists. These were distributed to State Institutions and to the Little Sisters of the Poor. Specially engraved cards with a picture of the school and sea- sonal greetings were a special feature this year. In many cases, these were converted into spir- itual bouquets. Each homeroom was provided with a Crib. The day preceding the Christmas holidays was spent in true holiday manner, enter- tainments in each class and then a final assembly where the Glee Club carolers entertained. Christmas Operefta . . . The Gift of Christmas was staged December ZI, I938 in the auditorium as the Yuletide pre- sentation of the Glee and Dra- matic Clubs. This beautiful story in song was ably produced and delightfully received. The body of the play was composed of four tableaux linked together by the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love. Soloists appeared from among the carolers and in addi- tion the orchestra rendered a Christmas medley. Mercy Day . . . Mercy Day was celebrated on October 7, the feast of the Holy Rosary. Each of the seven hundred girls of the Academy singing Mother Beloved, marched down the aisle of the auditorium to the shrine where she placed her floral of- fering. Following the presentation of flowers, Father Dillon led the girls in the Act of Consecration and then addressed the group on the virtues of Mary. He advo- cated that the girls imitate Her particularly in the virtues of kindness and humility, Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament followed, at which time the pledge of the Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament was re- newed. Lent. . . Practices advocated for Lent took on a more positive than negative aspect. According to Sodality organized action, posters promulgated the opportunities of the Daily Six, namely, attend- ance at daily Mass and daily re- ception of Holy Communion, reci- tation of the Rosary and Stations of the Cross, Visits to the Blessed Sacrament and the building up of character by means of daily as- pirations. Mental prayer on the subject of the Passion was en- gaged in. Mary's Day . . . Mary's Day is one of the many days in the school year set aside for the honor and glory of Our Lady, It was fittingly carried out by the celebration of Mass in the cathedral. The I. F. C. A. sponsored an essay contest on Mary, the Mother of Mankind, in which the Seniors participated. Day of Recollection . . . This was the day that the Sen- iors will never forget-a day set aside from the regular flow of activities to provide a restful lull in school life. This day was, of course, the Day of Recollection. It was our happy privilege to have the Rev. Francis P. Le- Buffe, S. J., as retreat master. It will be remembered that Father LeBuffe was the principal speaker at Commencement last year. From the very first moment of his supreme rule, he had struggled with innumerable obstacles and triumphed most frequently, He had consecrated his life for peace among God's wayward children, Hatred and persecution buffeted his efforts on every side. But he was indeed Peter, the rock to which three hundred and fifty millions of Catho- lics clung. Peoples of the earth, regardless of faith, would do well to rev- erence his memory and accomplishments. Pagan conception of family, atheism, communism, rampant immorality, and the evil ef- fects of these, recognized in him an implacable foe, Pius Xl cham- pioned right over all else. He never discriminated while pleading for the downtrodden. The poor and oppressed felt his kindly fatherhood and partisanship. When the bells of St. Peter's tolled their sad message, the world lost a just mediator, Many countries profited by his keen judgment in international difficulties, Through his efforts the tiny country that is Vatican City became an independent State, Achille Ratti, during his papal office, led a life of the strictest simplicity, sanctity, and sovereign shrewdness. Catholics mourn one who held sway over their spiritual and temporal interests, one con- stantly concerned with the welfare of the world who died wishing that he had accomplished more. There are still so many things to do. -MARY ALLEN, '39 SENIOR STUDY CLUB ln response to the plea for Catholic Action the Senior Class has formed an organization known as the Mercy Truth Crusaders. The Crusaders are divided in four groups for study club purposes: the Siena, Loyola, Aquinas, and Avila Study Clubs. Under the guidance of Reverend Father Dillon, our Spiritual Di- rector, each group holds its meetings on Monday mornings. The general topic for the four Senior Clubs for the first quarter was the Liturgy. The Encyclical of His Holiness, our late Pope Pius Xl, on Atheistic Communism provided fruitful discussion for the remainder of the year. ,l FLASH! - BUT... When a screaming headline blazes a trail of news, most people become avidly interested, lf a program is interrupted with the word flash everyone within hearing stops to listen. When a play or movie is given favorable notice, the public flock to see it. And why shouldn't they? lt's the natural thing to dol But do the people read the meaning behind that headline, or that flash, or the plot of that movie or play? lf they do not, and their opinion can be easily swayed, then they are potential enemies of our system of government, and easy victims of radical powers. lf they know the Church's stand in such cases, they would never be the cause or carrier of this indifferent attitude disease that can break a nation. ARCHCONFRATERNITY WORK Reverend Cornelius Collins, Director of the Archconfraternity of Christian Doctrine made an appeal for help when he addressed the school. Workers were needed in the Confraternity to aid in the teaching of religion classes, The Seniors responded nobly. Each Monday, fifty-nine girls attended class preparatory to summer teach- ing. The undergraduates participated also by making picture book- lets for use in the elementary classes. - SCHOOL SHOWS MISSION ZEAL Stamps, Tinfoil, Socials Aid Missionaries St, Francis Xavier, patron of the missions, must be proud of the spirit of the school bearing his name. Looking down, his eyes must have lighted as he saw the ever-growing mountain of stamps that means salvation of souls, as he glimpsed uniformed girls stoop to salvage scraps of tinfoil, as he heard the strains of Penny Serenade fill the gym at the Mission Dances. Knowing that the good work will continue he realizes also that his school has had an active part in the missionary advance of the twentieth century. SODALITY OF OUR LADY OF MERCY To uphold the ideals of Maryl To impress upon the mind of each and every sodalist the three-fold purpose of the Sodality, the personal sanctification of its members, the sanctification of the neighbor, and the defense of the Church. What privileges! As an introduction to Sodality work, six officers were privileged to attend the Summer School of Catholic Action held in Boston College, Bcston, Massachusetts. Immediately after our return to school, a reorganization meeting was held to give the student body a report of the Summer School and to begin anew the program of the Sodality. Next the seniors gave a Freshman Welcome Party to acquaint the Freshmen with the Sodality and with S. X. A. Our Spiritual meetings were held on the first Friday of each month, the Sodality Communion day. A Rosary campaign in the form of the Living Rosary was inaugurated during the month of October, The Sodality Bell, celebrating its second birthday, made its appearance in October, Pumpkin Party the first Mission social of the year was con- ducted by the Seniors, who proved their interest in the missions through their sincere and enthusiastic efforts. ln November, a triduum was made to St. Robert Bellarmine for the success of the elections all over the United States. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, eighty-four girls made their Act of Consecration and were received into the Sodality. A triduum of Masses and Holy Communions was offered for the Intentions of the Holy Father, particularly that the world would har- ken to his wise counsels and admonitions. During the Christmas Season, the sodalists joyously carried out their plans to bring cheer to our less fortunate friends. A true spir- itual satisfaction was experienced as we saw the happiness which was brought about as a result of thoughtfulness. ln January we united with those all over the world to celebrate the Church Unity Octave. The Daily Six Lenten practices were adopted as the predomi- nant spiritual activity for the season of prayer and penance. Now in retrospect we ask ourselves: has the Sodality benefited us? Has it helped us to attain our goal? The answer of each sodalist will be in the affirmative if in the slightest way she can say, Through Mary l have come nearer to the heart of her Divine Son. Now may the S. X. A. Sodality live on,-in our homes, in our parishes, in our future lives!
