Oh, mama, there is an awful lot of girls hear. Some are big and ware read bows and some like me ware green ones. They also have girls with blue and pink bows. Green is best don't you think? Mama, what's a lectore? Teacher told us we were to have one and then it was someone talking. The lectore mustn't have come, don't you think? When you see me again your going to like me lots more, A nice woman came and talked to us in the audatorriom. June 4, IQ36 Dear Mother, I-low much more at ease I have felt this year. A blue tie seemed to gain for me a slight bit of recognition. Looking back over the year I find that most of my time was spent in earnest study, in fact we Sophomores distinguished ourselves among other students of S.X.A. by our alert and studious manner. This year we were introduced to our new gym and basketball teacher, Miss I-lelen Slattery. The Sophomore basketball team was then inaugurated, and defeated the Juniors in their first game of the season. Wasn't that grand, Mother? With Book Week came the opening of a new school library, lt's a lovely one, Mother! Now we don't have to look so far for our reference books. We were entertained with a lecture and moving pictures on the Catholic Mis- sions by Father Stevenson, SJ. Ibefore the Thanksgiving holidaysl. On December the sixth the new students were enrolled in the Association of the Miraculous Medal, and Mother, this year I could watch the Freshmen! We next saw moving pictures of The Lady of the Lake. The Sophomores paid particular attention, because we have to read that book next year. Christmas came at last! The Senior Rosa Mystica Players presented the inspir- ing Christmas Play, No Room In the Inn, The Classic Guild of New York delighted us with the presentation of Great Scenes from Shakespeare. They were wonderful, Motherl Guess I'm really beginning to understand Shakespeare after all, Reverend Cyprian Truss, OSEC. conducted a most impressive retreat that I am sure none of us will ever forget. At length the Sophomores gain supreme recognition-a chance to display our dramatic ability! The newly-formed club presented The I-leirs of Rockford, a drama of five acts, It evidently was a success for our Principal told us we showed signs of future greatness. During Lent the Senior Rosa Mystica Players instilled in us all a true devotion to the Passion of Christ with their presentation of Pontia, The last feature of the year was an operetta entitled f'The Willow Plate, pre- sented bythe Glee Club. The Sophomore year has been most enjoyable. All the activities have been very interesting. As I look forward to changing my tie of blue to one of old rose I'Il try to acquire that dignity so becoming a Junior. Lovingly, BETTY' lSophomoreI Page One lflundred Twenty-eight Saint Xavier's Academy, 6O Broad Street, Providence, R. l. June 6, l937 Dear Mother, This year marks the debut of our class into journalistic circles, and, as l have been appointed a member of The Xavierette Staff, I shall write all my letters in a reporter's style. They will not be so entertaining, doubtless, but l have gotten into the habit of conciseness, brevity, and relating facts. Constant practise makes per- fection here, reports indicate. The Sodality of this Academy fosters all the social and religious activities. In the first of these, the Seniors played hostesses to the school at their presentation of two one-act plays, The Ghost of Deepdene and A White Lie, Following this event, two weeks later they again entertained us with a dance in the form of a Harvest Party, which was novel and entertaining. Late in October a spiritual peace descended upon the Academy as the students made their retreat which was conducted by Reverend Leo Gilleran, S.J. A splendid demonstration in speed in typing was witnessed by the Commercial students as Chester Soucek, world's amateur champion typist, entertained them on February 26. With the advent of March, the Junior class basketball team defeated the Senior basketball team in a game packed with action. Some of our stars are: Cyrilla Coupe, Mary Keefe, l-lelen McCaffrey, and Carolyn Richards. In April, Miss Dorothy Day, the well-known Catholic Actionist, lectured to the student body and thrilled each girl individually with spirit. The climactic point of interest was reached when three of our Junior class were appointed to go to the School of Catholic Action in Buffalo. l can't be journalistic now, Mummie, dear, 'cause one of them is mel The other girls are Virginia Gverton and Margaret Gallogly. The Junior class was presented the Shield of Victory in recognition of their superiority on the basketball court. We have just received the news of promotion. l-lappily, the next letter you will receive will be written by a Senior. Wait till I get home and we plan my outfit for the summer, l've got so much to tell you! g Love, Your daughter, MARY lJuniorl Page One l-lundred Twenty nine Saint Xavier's Academy, 60 Broad Street, Providence, R. I. May Zl, i938 Mother dearest, At last your dignified Senior is nearing the end of her high school career. As l look back on our first assembly for I-loly Mass in the auditorium, somehow I realize the full significance of the title Senior. With our bright red ties we held our heads high, and even though our goal was not yet attained, at least it was in sight. Could you blame us, Mother, for being just a trifle proud? Of course, the fact of our seniority secured for us some outstanding privileges. First of all, we became members of the Mercy Truth Crusaders. We held our meet- ings every Friday, discussing the I-loly Ghost, under the guidance of our Spiritual Director, Father Dillon. Those meetings were delightful, Mother, they illumined our minds that we might see and understand the things that are for our eternal good. At the first Sodality meeting, the officers related their experiences at the Summer School of Catholic Action. A Sodality paper was soon organized and rang out school news weekly. Drama has ever had a powerful influence upon the human race. This year the Rosa Mystica Players have entertained us with two superb dramatic entertainments, For Flag and Cross and during the Lenten season, The Upper Room. The Senior Debating Club made its initial appearance on the occasion of Mother Provincial's feast day. Such clever arguments and scholarly delivery could not remain unnoticed. This has been the most enjoyable year socially. Harvest I-lallucinations, the Senior dance held in the gym, was the first convivial event of the year. Following this was the grand Christmas Sale at which many of the earnest salesgirls showed marked ability, because their cheery talk not only amused but also brought financial results. Mother dear, I shall never forget our enthusiasm when we received the invitation to the Alumnae Ball. All the girls looked charming in their bright-hued gowns. Our long-dreamed-of Senior prom had come at last! Our basketball team holds a conspicuous place in Saint Xavier's sport world, winning the shield both in our Junior and Senior years. We enjoyed the return of the Classic Guild with presentation of Scenes from Cyrano de Bergerac. We were entertained musically by the well-known xylophonist Marielta I-Iuron, who charmed 'us with soothing strains, and enchanting melodies. Father Cyprian Truss, O.S.F.C. conducted our last retreat. It was a memorable one. I-le impressed upon us that personal holiness is the goal that every individual must strive for. The Glee Club presentation of The Gypsy Rover culminated our activities for the year. Often in our after life we shall review the sweet memories of ouryears at Saint Xavier's, thanking our Alma Mater for many fair and lovely gifts, but for none more sweet and holy than those which came from membership in Our l.ady's Sodality. MARGARET MARY DWYER Page One l-lundred Thirty-tvvo Class Prophecy For months now we had been travelling through the insignificant and significant spots of old Europe. During this time it had often been our custom to peruse the registers of the hotels at which we stopped. As all four of us were travelling alone in a strange country, it was heart-warming to find here and there familiar names of those from home. Many times we had met former classmates and had held gay reunions, thinking over the so-called old days. Many of our schoolmates were fur- thering their education abroad preparing for degrees while others were travelling for pleasure. On several of the registers in England we read something like this: Miss Mary Brennan - Transient - Lawyer Miss Margaret Dwyer Miss Barbara Rogue -TransienthOwners of Stables Miss Patricia Woods l Miss l-lelen l-lennessey Miss Dorothy White Miss l-lope Sullivan ' Miss Elizabelgh McDeqed I -Resident-Members of Musical Stock Company iss i een avanag Miss Rita McManus Miss Eleanor Eoy Miss Anna Kelaghan -Transient - Manager of lnsurance Company Miss Eileen Munson - Residegt - Visiting Stateswoman iss oretta l-Iilson - - Miss Catherine Rettenmeyer S -Resldemshcllemlsls Miss Barbara l-loey - Transient- Tourist Miss Helen Mahoney 1 Miss Lorena Ward -Transient-Teachers of Chemistry Miss Emily Burke Miss Lena l-lassell 1 Miss Margaret Gallogly I Miss Marion Leary Miss Betty McNulty -Resident - Members of Actors' Guild Miss Ruth Dorsey I Miss Ruth Trayner l Miss Mary D'Leary l At the hotel in Belfast we found these names: Miss l-lelen Kenny - - Miss Mary Corrigan -Transient-Cartoonists Miss Mary Sackenheim 4 Resident - Cartoonist Miss Dorothea Mycroft 1 M155 Marr Dalton l-Transient -Journalists, here for Convention Miss Rita Day l Miss Esther O'Donnell l As we travelled southward, through France to Bordeaux, we stopped at a small hotel where many students resided. l-lere again our hearts were cheered as we found these names on the register: Miss Betty Driscoll- Transient W- Student Traveller Miss Marjorie Cody - Transient - Student Traveller Miss Colette Emin - Resident- Professor of Mathematics Going north again to Paris, we found more familiar names on the register there. lt seems that many of our classmates had gone in for the designing and selling of milady's wardrobe. As we were signing the register we noticed the names ot the proprietors at the top. Sodality officers, chosen in June, l937, attended the Summer School of Catholic Action, held in Canisius College, Buffalo, New York, When they returned in Septem- ber, it was with very definite ideas and much enthusiasm to make our Sodality a more vital organization in the Academy. A reorganization meeting, for the purpose of describing the activities of Summer School of Catholic Action and to outline the year's work was conducted by the officers. The Seniors and .luniors were present. The result, a permeation of the entire school body with this spirit, was gratifying, Spiritual meetings, including the recitation of the Office, were held on the first Friday of each successive month, General Sodality Communion day. During October's meeting, a Living Rosary was announced as the spiritual activity of the month. An added surprise was the introduction of the Sodality Bell, a Sodality weekly publica- tion-an entirely new feature in the Academy. The first attempt in the matter of Socials was that of the Freshman Welcome Party. Harvest l-lallucinations, the Senior Mission Dance, soon followed. This too was much awaited, well prepared, and much enjoyed! An interview with l-lis Excellency, Most Reverend Francis R. Keough, DD., was granted to the Sodality officers who attended the Summer School of Catholic Actionl They described their activities in Buffalo and returned with many new suggestions and our Bishop's blessings on the Sodality. Colorful informational Bulletin Board and suggestive Rosters, were evidences of the zealous Publicity Committee. Sodality corporate Worship, including a prayer campaign for the l-loly Souls, a l-ligh Mass in honor of Saint'Francis Xavier, the secondary patron of the Sodality, a Reception of the Juniors into the Sodality on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and a Triduum for the l-loly Father, were other effective Sodality activities during De- cember. To spread Christmas joy to the unfortunate, Sodalists visited various charitable institutions, Christmas week, and also donated baskets of food for the poor. A Missal Drive was conducted by the Eucharistic Committee in preparation for the Annual Retreat. Sodality activities prove that this organization in Saint Xavier's is truly a vital part of the Academy, not only to increase personal sanctification but to give due honor to Our Blessed Mother. We trust that all its labor is not lost but that our Sodality will be a potent force for good in the life of every Sodalist, even when she has become an Alumna. VIRGINIA ELIZABETH OVERTON Page One l-lundred Forty-eight Page One I-iundrecl Forty-mine lVlercy Truth Crusaders Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. - Keats The study club which meets each Friday morning is also under the protection of Our Lady of Mercy. For one period each week the Senior Class assembles, Reverend Father Dillon presiding, to discuss various topics of our holy religion. The procedure has been mental prayer according to the third method of Saint Ignatius. Personal reactions permit every member to take active participation, The information gathered at these weekly sessions is interesting and helpful now and will be of inestimable value in future years when our Academy days are far behind us. Like the Crusaders of medi- eval history we modern crusaders will be ready to sally forth to defend definitely and effectively the eternal truths that we have been taught, , CECILIA MARY O'KAlXlE The Students Spiritual Leadership Convention l am one of the girls who was fortunate enough to attend the convention which was held at Boston College on April 2 and 3. Fifteen hundred students from all over the country represented their sodality. There were delegates from lvlontreal and Washington. Everyone contributed most graciously and intelligently to the progres- sion of Catholic Action. I was deeply impressed by the enthusiasm displayed by Catholic youth determined to win souls for God and who are already working zealously to attain this end. lt was most interesting and gratifying to hear of the work the young people have already accomplished under the direction of the sodality and Church. St, Xaxier's took a most active part in the discussions, offered suggestions, and told of the work being done here at school. The twenty-four girls certainly proved a credit and were complimented for the splendid work of our sodality. Mass, l-loly Communion, Mental Prayer made in common, opened each day's pro- gram, Certain hours of the day were set apart for recreation, and entertainment was most generously furnished by volunteers including Father Lord who offered his talents and stole the show. lt is the Catholic youth, the coming generation of the nation that will rise and shine, combat communism and other isms whose basic object is to abolish God. We must stand together, for there is strength in union, carry on the works of those who have gone before us, and be alert to meetlevery new phase of activity. Catholic youth must be Catholic leaders. The discussions were vibrant with workable ideas of zealous sodailsts under a zealous, magnanimous leader. Thank God for Reverend Father Lord, Sl! W The Retreat books were laid aside and harmless chatter gladly silenced as hearts and hands were raised to Cod in prayer on February the second, when the Reverend Cyprian Truss, OS.F.C., opened our retreat, For three days a united, continuous prayer arose to Cod. The Class ot l93S, now as prospective alumnae, and all undergraduates, have, and always shall keep Tlying high above Their Academy, The cross and the Tlag, The two symbols which ever live in Their hearts and urge Them on to bigger and better achievements, Tor The everlasting glory ot God, and fine, true patriotism ot country, MARY ESTHER OADONNELL pilgrimages Devotion to Our Lady has ever been paramount aT Saint Xavier's. Two import- ant outlets Tor This devotion are The annual pilgrimages. On The eve ot Mercy Day, September twenty-Tour, Our Lady surely awaits The coming ot The entire student body to The chapel shrine Tor The Tirst pilgrimage. The girls, uniformly dressed, solemnly walk down the aisle ot The chapel to greet Our Lady with an adorning rose bud indica- tive oT Their increasing gratitude Tor The many Tavors received throughout The year, a chorus ot Tresh young voices tills The chapel as They sing Loved Mother, and The walls reverberate with The tervent recitation ot The Act ot Consecration. May Day, our tinal tribute to Our Lady, as Seniors, is observed in a similar man- ner. The entire student body again visits Our Lady, but in separate groups and aT different Times, in order To keep The shrine decorated all during The month. Mercy Day and May Day will always remain foremost in The minds ot The gradu- ates of Saint Xavier's.
