OZKMNMJWZQQW W? agile gateway Published by the Class of 1948 ST. FRANCIS XAVIER ACADEMY BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ggbreface Lest, through the years that lie ahead, the memo- ries of our stay at St. Francis grow dim, the staff has endeavored to capture some of that spirit that now warms our hearts and lights the way that We have passed together for the last four years,-and to let film and ink make a record so that in some future day, as we turn these pages, they may en- kindle our faith, sustain our hope and move our charity to give prayerful thanks to the Source of all our blessings Christ, the Light of the World. -CLAIRE ALTHISAR 4 Eecfication . . ass o 1948 There is no adequate way to express our feeling of love and gratitude toward you, who have ever been our inspiration and encouragement. Our young hearts are too full and words too limited. So it is with good faith that, in your.tender under- standing, you will accept, not only this book, but our gratitude for the four years of pleasure and achievement which it seeks to represent. We dedi- cate this edition of our yearbook, TO YOU - OUR LOVING PARENTS PATRICIA 0'DONOGHUE 6 Ls ST. FRANCIS XAVIER ACADEMY 7 prayer to christ, :Light of the W By MARY DIERS At last, we pass the portal fair- And leave our childhood years, To step into a world beset With raging hates and fears. With lamps held high, may we show The flag of Faith unfurled- That all mankind may turn to Thee, Oh, Christ, Light of the World! a men Q J ifilx vfx Jf Clxtibvpn ff wwggxj f iff QQ is heme We have endeavored, in this our yearbook, to show that even in this dark and dreary postwar world of inflation, mercenary interests and atheism, there can be a ray of light to illumine the despairing world. This is the light of the Catholic faith, of Christ's teachings and His graces, of His increasing love for us. As Catho- lic young women, stepping from familiar security into turmoil and destruction, we must contribute our efforts to the task of making the world God-conscious. After the excellent training which we have received for four years we are prepared to step forward to take our rightful places in a confused society. Whether destined for further education or for the business world we will lind use for these teachings. Not only have we been instructed in literature, science, mathematics, history and other subjects essential to an academic training, but we have also learned the secrets of success-Christian love, humil- ity, trust in God, and hope in His wishes to guide us to salvation. We have been taught Catholic ideals which will be the principles of our lives. VVe have been taught love of neighbor and the essen- tials of justice. As we have absorbed this knowledge we have become discerning as to the persons with whom we associate and the places which we visit. All these teachings we will take with us as we venture without and they will be as candles to light the way along a dark road. These candles will never die out but will live until the end of time. Violent winds-atheism, heresy, persecution-will attempt to blow them out but, as in the past, they will fail. VVith our Alma Mater as our guiding light and our inspiration and with Christ as the Light of the XVorld to watch over us, we will advance with our candles, watching them llare up and enkindle the heart of mankind. -PA'rR1c1A DUFFY SJR. n Cue M W V R K, xfgfff ,ti if we 44 'gg' 385' 'Hs 1 9 if W Q ' 'P ,AM W SW fx w fi 'fm 5' f A ' WW 'FL' .V ,J an ga.-. But the Catholic graduate has learned to walk courageously by the light of faith. Faith is not feeling. It is a greatness of mind which accepts blindly revelations of God. How happy this wonderful gift makes us. How fortunate we are to know God! This gift in itself makes life so much easier and understandable. At times the road of life will be bumpy, but what laudable goal is obtained without some degree of hardship? The Faith with which we have been blessed shines on those spots that demand wary walking. There will be moments of distress and uncertainty but Faith innately will help us to triumph. Faith gives more security, more courage, more peace of mind and heart, more consideration for our fellow man. Our days have passed in seeking God's help and approbation. We are anxious to pass on this great gift to others. Not only our words, but our deeds, should be invitations to taste and see that the Lord is sweet. The culmination of a life lived according to these precepts of Faith is peace and contentment. Life with its difficulties and hardships will be a thing of the past. We will be happy when we come to the end of the long hard road, for we shall have reached our goal. JOAN O'MALLEY 5 -X-'fb 4 g 14 Cum 15 love oaglzts tlze Wag .K Truly, love is the beacon light . - guiding man to his divine des- . tiny. God has created us out of , s love and He has sustained us through love. Real charity is as i the sun, radiant centre which streams forth on all sides the bright rays of divine truth which reveal God to man. Life is a Divine Romance with an eternity of love as its reward. Love is an endless creative process, it is also an endless voy- age of discovery. It is the spirit which delies the world with its maze of hypocrisies and vast expanse of unhappiness. The path of life is a labor of love, the conception of man and his yearning for a home whose doors are always open with welcome, these all preach charity. The foundation of Chris- tianity is based on love of God and of neighbor. If, during life, we turn to love we shall forget to be grasping because we shall desire to serve the world, rather than ourselves. But love is not entirely receiving, to be complete it must be infused with the thought of ever giving and sharing. Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not covet. These vices are not mere deprivations to help build character. Rather, they are forbidden because they are wrong, they hurt those with whom we should be living in harmony and love. They merely are small aids in keeping the greater affirmative law-That shalt love. Yes, we shall love through the care of the sick, the instruction of the ignorant and the burial of our dead. Outwardly these things are simple but to the true Christian they are the fulfillment of the law of love. Charity alone shall light the way to the solution of all the problems confronting us today. Intolerance, international discord and domestic trials, in all their con- fusion and perplexity, shall give way to a happy world if the correct path is chosen. Turn to God, directed by the beacon light of love, for In Him there is life, and the life is the light of men. ELLEN CASEY 16 .ffllf ofet your alight csjhlne How far the little candle throws its gleam So shines a good deed in a naughty world. So observed the philosopher and poet, William Shakespeare. It is a beautiful comparison, but not entirely his own, for, many centuries before the Elizabethan Age, the King of philosophy and poetry, jesus Christ, told His followers, You are the light of the world . . . men light a candle upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all who are in the houseg so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in heaven. That mess- age He imparted to all who were to possess the Faith, not merely to those who were then His disciples. It was for us, that we may use the candle, not only to light our own path to the Eternal Light, but to attract others to its lucidity, warmth and glory. This candle, lovely and inspiring, stands in a window, the window of Charity in the House of God. It burns quietly, but lights, warms and beautifles a cold heart, and by its very simplicity and unassuming richness, enlightens the labyrinths of sin and chastises proud spirits. So can we, the present disciples of the King, take that candle, following always its light, and keep ever constant the fire of our Faith. By our words and ac- tions, throughout our lives, what- ever may be our state, we may reflect its gentle light to all with whom we come in contact. Nu- merous and frequent will come opportunities to melt the icy heart, to enkindle the lukewarm and to guide the fervent. Thus will be the candle's gleam: far- flung yet steadfast, universal yet constant, glorious yet quiet, mighty yet humble! KATHLEEN MAX. -,,.. . 18 sm yum 'um I9 .Z Vessel of ought A woman etched in loveliness, A vessel of light shall be, To hold aloft in her bright lamp, The Light for the world to see. T'was God Himself, gave her the spark Not many years agog And many hands along the way Have fanned the gentle glow. And she, adorned exquisitely, Shall hold the fragile flame: Within the keeping of her heart Shall guard her precious claim. Simplicity and purity, With tenderness combined, Have made the clearest, safest place To keep the flame enshrined. And Faith has made it strong and sure, And Trust has made it fine, And Love has been the candle Where the Light may always shine. And with this light she sees the way Along life's darkened fare Nor shall she ever trade her prize For all the earth's false glare. Yet this is not her gift alone, But she must spread the Light, For every spark that kindles lo'w Adds brightness to the night. And all the world turns hopefully To her to lead the way To lift Christ high, Light of the World That we may have the Day. BETTY SANDKAUT '48 20 X I Q 'W' zz N' Vi . WH mn.-W D1 I -. As the train pulled out of the depot, it seemed to most of us that the journey would be a long and diflicult one. However, we soon found out differently. Along the way, through the efforts of our capable crew, we sidetracked such obstacles as Latin, algebra, and chemistry. The members of the faculty, our engineers, were ever watchful to keep us on the straight and narrow track. 'Midst' pleasures and toil, we soon found our journey coming to a close. Our Senior year, the last stop before the end of the line, was upon us. At last we were given our coveted school rings-the garnet and gold- symbol of our teamwork. Only now, in graduating, we are conscious of what we are leaving. It was September, 1944, when old Sol shone radiantly down on forty-eight eager freshmen. We waited patiently, almost hesitantly, to begin what has proven to be four memorable years of hard work, mingled with fun and lasting friend- ships. We were excited that day-anxious and happy that at long last, we were to experience those incidents that label one- Freshie. And Freshies we were, with spoon corsages, mass of pigtails, and elaborate name plates. But as the days went by, we realized that there was more to being a Freshie than the fun of initiation, and soon we were being initiated into the mysteries of Latin and algebra. In sophomore year we changed the x's and y's for geometric angles and prop- ositions. Little did we know just how much the bargain entailed. Caesar cam- paigned against us. But we were no longer Freshies. In fact we sent the new Freshies up to see the famous swimming pool on the fourth floor, an attraction that we ourselves had climbed to see upon our arrival. Alas, the end is almost in sight! September '46 found us jubilant Juniors, sitting in on the trial of the notorious Catiline, and listening to the orations of the brilliant prosecutor, Tully, It didn't take many periods in the Chem lab to discover that most of us would never be modern Curie's. Being measured for our Senior rings, spurred us on to greater effort in the june examinations. Then we found ourselves looking forward to Hallowe'en-but not for the eeriness of the fantasies of the witches and goblins. On this day we received the garnet ring that later was to reflect the memories of our happy school days. Little did we realize that when we glanced into the dark, red recesses of that stone, hearts would be lilled with memories of Senior years. Now we see ourselves as happy, angelic choristers bringing the Christmas spirit to those around us. We remember our disappointment when our prom was postponed because of twenty- Eve inches of snow. And most important, among the memories that come flooding back to us today, is the picture of our Class Day, and finally, of Graduation. Of the four years the last has been the happiest, yet it has been the saddest, too. For we are leaving the wonderful days behind us. VV e shall miss the familiar corri- dors, classrooms and stairways. But there are things, beautiful things which will never leave us, the tense moments of basketball games, the wild cheering, the anxiety of the last few seconds! the gay holiday spirit that descends at Christmas time, painting windows, sending cardsg crowning Mary Queen of the May, the hymns, the flowers, burning the petitions, the most irreplaceable of all, our visits to the chapel, a retreat from the clamoring world, where peace envelops each visitor and our Lord, Himself listens and consoles. These are our memories, ours to keep, to treasure, always. MARY ANN FROST DOROTHY MCDONALD 54 QQ K Y C25 -SKK X X X s-5 SW T35 XX X VIRGO DOLOROSA PRAESIDIUM OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE PRAESIDIUM 56 egion o ary As little children, we were told prayers to Mary would obtain from her Son our special intentions. Legionnaires honor her weekly with a meeting of prayer and thanksgiving and an hour of charitable works, i.e., visiting the hospitalized and the blind, making rosaries, etc. The Legion has so influenced Xavierites that this year over eleven dozen dolls were dressed for Christmas distribution among less fortunate children. lt is our joy, the praesiclium, Mater lNIisericordiae, has been inaugurated by the alumnae in order that our graduates may always be as little children to Mary. JOAN T. DENTON MARIA PIETA PRAESIDIUM ropagation of the Cggaltlz By the zealous works of the ofhcers and the class prefects, through the past year, the student body has become mission-minded. During Christmas time the girls gave generously to help support the little ones of China and the Lenten mite boxes were filled to capacity. We trust that future records are even better than the ones we have made. JANE A. KAVANAGH 57 The Gateway Staff Workers for the Propagation of Faith 58 Cqlze Gourler The sound of school dismissal bell on Monday afternoon is the signal that precipitates a rush to Courier meet- ings, where juniors and seniors assem- ble to plan and publish the school paper. The casual observer would notice a bevy of girls, searching for possible news items, giggling over a preview of Tiny Types, or industrious- ly scanning copy in search of error. The Courier has been, for many of us, the means of furthering an am- bition, by helping us to bridge the gap between learning and teaching, receiv- ing and giving. Each term finds a large class of Freshmen regis- tered, and these in turn have increased the enrollment at the Academy in the Sophomore year. Two large classes entered in February, bringing the number of St. Francis students up to 530. The Gateway and the Courier have received substantial support from the studentsg Catholic action groups function with great results and the scholastic records speak of splendid work accomplished. Arriving we viewed a striking silhouette, the Capitol, grey against a very blue sky. This was but the beginning of a mavelous series of thrills that surged through us continuously during our sta . We inspected the huge Congressional Library. We walked down the steps from the top of the Washington Monument. We explored the Smith- sonian Institute.- We saw the miniature Shakes- pearean Theatre in the Folger Library. VVe rode through Arlington, stopping at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We visited Mount Vernon and stood on the porch overlooking the Potomac, where once Washington entertained Lafayette. VVe admired the Shrine of the Immaculate Con- ception, as yet unfinished. We were admitted to the White House. VVe wandered through the Capitol amazed at the phenominal whispering galleries. Yet to me, all these wondrous sights were far less expressive than two others. The first was the Franciscan Monastery, where, after assisting at Mass and attending a communion breakfast, a guide led us to various shrines. One a dimly lighted, chamber in which lay a breathtaking likeness of Christ in the sepulchre. XfVe were stunned by its realness, its vividness, its holi- ness. The other indelible mark was left after seeing the Lincoln Memorial. It was hard to believe that those eyes were stoneg for they were relaxing, understanding, yet determined eyes. Eyes that welcomed each of us, warmed our hearts, and made us gladder than ever to be Americans. We returned from Washington richer for hav- ing had our anticipation thoroughly satisfied. If the world today would but view the entombed Christ as weg herald Him as its Lightg and realize that it is from this Light that the Lincolns kindle their torches, then we might approach peace with a surer step. -MARYANN Faosr 4AI F, Q ! , a M. Dorothy Ann Zuppordi, 1574 Schenectady Ave H Qraaluateis prayer Dear God, All other decisions made throughout our lives are sud- denly insignificant, in the face of the greatest. In years to come, when, with Your help we have found our tiny places in this world, we will doubtless recall the alpine proportions with which it looms at present, lightly. It is to us now a mountainous problem, for, in taking the next step we must possess a definite aim. We must know where we are going and then resolve on getting there. You have given to each of us certain gifts-gifts that You have commanded us to utilize. Dear God, help us to recognize these gifts and upon recognizing, help us to employ them for You. We need the Light of Faith. Instill it firmly within us that we may realize it, appreciate it, keep it. We need the Light of hopeg to use, perhaps, as a crutch, when weary, along life's way. Most of all, Dear God, we need the glorious Light of Your love, a love we know more infinite than time, more endless than space. With these, then, we shall be far richer than any earthly potentate, for our wealth will be eternal. It will endure forever, after the brightness of mundane opulence has dimmed. With these we shall be better able to progress along the pathway of life, imbued with a shining faith, strengthened by a glistening hope, blessed by a radiant Love. It is truly a mountain that challenges us. We can ascend with ease but in which direction? Dear God, call us to our individual ways. Now, upon our graduation, show us, guide us, enlighten us. Amen.
