James J. Sweeney Bixhop of Honolulu My dear Graduates: I am very glad to take this occasion to write a few words to you, now that you are about to graduate. No better theme could have been chosen for your school annual than Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . It is one of the characteristic marks, one of the advantages, of a Catholic School education, that it puts spiritual things first. It puts the soul's welfare above all else. It is an admirable thing to make this a very strong conviction, not only for a few days but during your whole life. Thus daily are you taught to Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . In a Catholic school, as elsewhere, the various temptations, the false representa- tions, the delusions of life, can gather a- round a student, if she allows it. She need not permit it, if she does not wish to, be- cause before her eyes every day are sym- bols and signs, which should remind her constantly of the value of the soul, of the way the soul goes to God, reminding her always to Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . She sees it in the Cross in her classroom, she beholds it in the religious character of her teachers, she reads it in the images of the Saints, who were masters of seeking first the Kingdom of God . From all that has been written above there can be gathered this truth - there is only one important thing in all life, that is to serve God. How will you serve Him? He is the Supreme Master of the Universe and it is His Kingdom we must seek. Your great privilege is to serve God, as a friend. In your Catholic education, this great truth has been brought home to you, so that you will never forget it. Delusions will present themselves, one after the other, but if you serve Him - in season and out of season - the problem of your life will be settled once and forever, for in seeking Him you will find Him, and in finding Him you will possess life everlasting. In dedicating your annual to the Franciscan Sisters, you are but echoing the filial sentiments of the entire student body, who are deeply indebted to the Sisters for the noble work they are doing, in training you to possess a knowledge and love of God. Continue, I pray you, to have an interest in your Alma Mater even after gradua- tion. Assist wherever or whenever you can in its noble aims and ambitions. By so doing you will repay in no small measure the influence the Sisters have had in molding your character in seeking first the Kingdom of God. Bestowing upon you, the graduating class, your teachers, parents and friends my episcopal blessing, I re- main, Faithfully yours, JAMES J. SWEENEY Bishop of Honolulu
