Sweeney Bixhop of Honolulu My dear Graduates: I am very glad to take this occasion to write a few words to you, now that you are about to graduate. No better theme could have been chosen for your school annual than Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . It is one of the characteristic marks, one of the advantages, of a Catholic School education, that it puts spiritual things first. It puts the soul's welfare above all else. It is an admirable thing to make this a very strong conviction, not only for a few days but during your whole life. Thus daily are you taught to Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . In a Catholic school, as elsewhere, the various temptations, the false representa- tions, the delusions of life, can gather a- round a student, if she allows it. She need not permit it, if she does not wish to, be- cause before her eyes every day are sym- bols and signs, which should remind her constantly of the value of the soul, of the way the soul goes to God, reminding her always to Seek ye first the Kingdom of God . She sees it in the Cross in her classroom, she beholds it in the religious character of her teachers, she reads it in the images of the Saints, who were masters of seeking first the Kingdom of God . From all that has been written above there can be gathered this truth - there is only one important thing in all life, that is to serve God. How will you serve Him? He is the Supreme Master of the Universe and it is His Kingdom we must seek. Your great privilege is to serve God, as a friend. In your Catholic education, this great truth has been brought home to you, so that you will never forget it. Delusions will present themselves, one after the other, but if you serve Him - in season and out of season - the problem of your life will be settled once and forever, for in seeking Him you will find Him, and in finding Him you will possess life everlasting. In dedicating your annual to the Franciscan Sisters, you are but echoing the filial sentiments of the entire student body, who are deeply indebted to the Sisters for the noble work they are doing, in training you to possess a knowledge and love of God. Continue, I pray you, to have an interest in your Alma Mater even after gradua- tion. Assist wherever or whenever you can in its noble aims and ambitions. By so doing you will repay in no small measure the influence the Sisters have had in molding your character in seeking first the Kingdom of God. Bestowing upon you, the graduating class, your teachers, parents and friends my episcopal blessing, I re- main, Faithfully yours, JAMES J. SWEENEY Bishop of Honolulu My dear girls, Your patron, St. Francis of Assisi, furnishes one of the clearest examples of what happens to those who seek first the kingdom of God. After a youth of selfishness and unhappiness Cvery much like our youth, I am afraidb he suddenly began to seek the kingdom of God in all things. Of course he found it in all things, and with it the happiness that the great King gives to those who find His kingdom. ' Another St. Francis wrote a whole book about how easy it is for people in the world to seek first the kingdom of God. In his Introduction to a De1foutLife, St. Francis de Sales has taught us two great truths. The first, how much happiness is found by those who devote their entire lives to Almighty God, the second, how this can be done without leaving the world-how sweet and easy it is for husbands and wives, doctors, lawyers, students to live lives of which every moment is devoted to their King. You are learning how to do this at St. Francis Convent. If you do not learn this, then all else that you learn will be in vain. And so my wish for you this year is this, that with the help of the Sisters who bear his name and to whom you have dedicated the Troubadour each of you learn to seek first God's kingdom, so that all things else necessary for your happiness may be yours. Consolata Principal Religion I V Science Mathematic: I V Dear Graduates of '53 May the Lord bless and keep you always! What does God want of you? There is only one answer-Service, loving service. You will give this service in one of three states-married, single or religious. Commencement means you begin a more intensive preparation for this particular state, and as you go on for further study, choose wisely. Why? Because we serve God best in the state for which we are adapted. Only in conformity to His divine plan can you hope to enthrone Christ as King in your sphere of influ- ence. Sometimes, as you travel on, it may be hard to say no but let us remember it must cost us something to do something for God. My eighth grade teacher gave me these words of advice, Say 'yes' as long as you may and say 'no' when you must. You are striving for perfection and you know no saint was ever a coward-have the courage to say that NO when you must. Make of each one, God, an arrow swift and straight Whittle, smooth and polish her short length Tip her with love and she will give her life To be the gleaming shaft of Thy great strength. Then hide within Thy quiver each small dart- Some day to win for Thee a truant heart. This borrowed thought is my prayer for you. God love you. SR. M. Few words in all, but behind them lies a fusion of study and play, trials and joys, failures and successes. Four happy years of high school life culminated thus with a sheepskin-diploma. Twenty-three timid but eager freshmen we were, that fall of 1949. We were entering for the first time as students here at St. Francis Convent School, our beloved Alma Mater. That was the year when we choseour colors of lavender and white, our patroness-Our Lady of the Franciscan Order, and our class flower-the white carnation. To guide our actions through the years we chose the motto Words teach, Example draws . With Sister M. Gerard as our guiding light we stumbled through a year of new experiences and adjustments in unfamiliar surroundings. Prime among these were the initiation, the many assemblies, and the long semester exams. When the calendar year rolled to another September, we were ready to step up to a higher rung in the ladder of education. We were now exactly double in number. No longer were we the babies ofthe school, so as sophomores we shed some of our carefree ways and settled a little more to studying. Nevertheless it was a wonderful year with Sister M. Bonaventure as our ad- visor. If the second year here was relatively quiet, not so the junior year. Hand in hand with lessons came social affairs. The memorable junior Prom, the banquet given to the seniors by the juniors, and the many other informal dances and parties made up a continuous whirl. The benefit dance to accumulate funds also added zest to that year. Behind all of this with her colorful ideas and advice was our teacher, Sister Miriam. Another summer passed and then we found ourselves as the upperclassmen, as seniors. We felt no older, but we had to act older, for this was the year we had to adhere to our motto as never before. Words were no longer adequate, actions counted more. With the last year of high school before us, we had the support and guidance of Sister M. Consolata, who, besides being principal, was class advisor and personal councilor for the seniors. First of all, we undertook the candy business to add to the building fund. Another money making project was the successful japanese benefit movie. The early months were crammed full with taking senior portraits, heading the Herald Drive, attending club meetings, participating in the annual retreat, and organizing the student council. Giving her much needed aid in extracurricular matters was capable Miss Anita Nakamine, as social advisor. The semester exams intervened in the session of picnics, parties, and movies to remind all that lessons were still the important subject at the moment. For those with an eye for the future, Sister M. Consolata gave vocational guidance in private consultation. In the later months the Senior Ball, the Senior banquet, the closed retreat, class day and pa- rents' night followed-all important in their own way, but actually only stepping stones to the day ......... On the day, we grasped our diploma firmly in our hands and turned to face the future with the spirit of St. Francis instilled securely in our hearts by our unfailing inspirations, the Sisters. We crusaders have earnestly endeavored to promote the religious and economic welfare of the peoples of the world. In keeping with the three fold program-prayer, sacrifice, and study we have intended to bring about a certain extent of excellence in uniting the world in Christ. Our zeal and eagerness in seeking missionary knowledge is ex- panding. In the future we hope for even more frequent prayers and the willing assistance of our crusaders, that through their enthusiasm others may be drawn to an increase of Gods love. What can we look upon that is more picturesque than God's earth? We Franciscan Foto Fans are entranced with the process of taking and producing pictures. Though our F. F. F. club is young, it is not without eager, enthusiastic beginners, zealously laboring to become skilled in this worthwhile art. While partaking in different projects through- out this year, we have obtained a certain amount of familiarity with photographic procedures. Our knowledge in this art has grown because we have been truly interested and have whole heartedly enjoyed our work. Our efforts will be rewarded and club will grow too. The Aquinas Business Club was again active at St. Francis Convent School, aiming for unity among the business students, special service to the school, and better understanding of the re- quirements demanded by employers with regard to their stenographers, secretaries and book- keepers. With service as their motto, they drew up an agenda for the year which kept its members busy and happy. Commercial students participated in the Gregg bookkeeping, shorthand, and typing contests in which many received certificates and honors. A picnic which was held at Hanauma Bay on November 28, 1952 and the Business Conven- tion that is held annually by the Catholic high schools for senior members were the highlights of the year's activities. Yet the Troubadour has something else, for without this extra it could not truly represent St. Francis Convent School a Catholic high school. This year the staff chose as the extra the theme of Seek first the kingdom of God. It was the desire of the staff to carry this theme throughout the book, to indicate and manifest the interlocking of God and school work, socials and plain every day living. The staff did their best in planning and producing the 1953 Troubadour and hope that you, the subscribers, will find it a rather special edition. YOUVB' ,av Spam A rounded and well balanced program of intramural sports, under the able guidance of Miss Lourdes Ganare, coach, was available to the students this year. With Miss Ganare as the Physical Education Director, a sports council was formed earlier in the year, and its members comprised the representatives from each of the classes. In the first semester, volleyball between the different classes held the spotlight. The Yankees B, which was the only team who competed against the outside schools, came in second, losing hon- orably to Sacred Hearts Convent. Keen competition prevailed in basketball as the season got under way. The Yankees came out on top and copped the championship. High scorer for St. Francis was Catherine Lenchanko.
