My dear Graduates: We are living in an age when thoughtfulness for others seems to have faded away in the maelstrom offorgetfulness. So long as we are well fed, sheltered and clothed, why should we care about the conditions or fate of others? Indeed, do not many repeat like Cain, Am I my brother's keeper? In reading your dedication we could not help but thank God that there are among our teen- agers those who see beyond the pale of dreamy youth the sorrow and distress of their fellow Catholics. Their language, their customs, their political ideas may differ from ours but we are united in the Mystical Body of Christ which is the Church, in it we are united to Christ by faith and charity and through Him to one another. It is this faith and charity which causes you to dedicate Saint Francis, the Troubadour annual to those gallant priests, sisters and missioners, molested and per- secuted, imprisoned and martyred in communist dominated lands, to the encouragement of their ever faithful peoples, suffering patiently for our Lord, to the assistance by your prayers of those fighting men, women and children, who are risking their lives for the preservation of their Catholic faith. As you leave the portals of your Alma Mater may we ask that your dedication of the Trouba- dout be put into practical use by promising to pray each day for those whom you know look to you for alleviation in their sufferings Through prayer you must proclaim your solidarity with your fel- low Catholics suffering behind the iron curtain of communistrc countries, behind the bamboo cur- tain of China and the asbestos curtain of Russia You must show them that they are not forgotten, not abandoned, you must show your reliance on the power of God to help them This you can do through prayer Pray, therefore pray that in the not too distant future may come that peace for which the whole world waits with expectation May our Lady Queen of Peace and Patroness of our beloved Diocese heed your suppliant prayers for those who suffer untold torture and misery because of their belief in jesus Christ, Her Divine Son Bestowing upon you, my dear graduates your parents and teachers, my episcopal blessing and praying that you will always be a credit to the faith for which millions are dying, I am Faithfully yours in Christ JAMES J SWEENEY Bishop of Honolulu 'tr .
