The organ began the processional and fifty-nine white-capped and gowned seniors of St. Francis, the class of '52, solemn, serious and serene for once, slowly moved down the aisle into their pews. Four years of high school blurred into one mental picture. Time had not waited after all. We were forty-one freshmen in '48, wide-eyed, curious, eager, excited. Sister Miriam, we'll never forget her, was our teacher. How much we owe her, and all our teachers, in fact. Remember the Sophomore year? We were dismayed to hear of our division into two classes but we got over that quickly. That was one year of concentrated studying and going through the pains of growing up. We enjoyed watching the freshmen going through initia- tion for we still remembered our own hectic week of humiliation. But nothing could surpass our junior year! Wasnlt the junior-Senior Prom just The Night? And look at all the socials we had-birthday parties, Halloween, Christmas Socials, the junior picnic and the square-dances! That's when Sister Gonzaga left and Sister Consolata became our new principal. We didn't know her so well then but now we wouldn't give her up for anything! Q When we returned as seniors that last fall-it was funny, we didn't feel like Seniors. We found out soon enough that being seniors didn't mean merely having privileges, and receiving admiration and respect from underclassmen, but it also meant responsibilities, set- ting examples, and practicingiwhat we preached. Seniorshipv'meant being oldest and wisest, showing reliability and initiative. It meant we had to be leaders, and good ones. The beginning months saw the school undergoing several necessary improvements-tar- ring of leaky roofs, repairing of poor plumbing, installation of auditorium windows, and remodeling of the dorms. We, the seniors, were greatly handicapped for a time by the inconvenient auditorium homeroom with insufficient equipment, but before long we saw the arrival of our new desks. Second semester Sister Celine replaced Sister Consolata as our homeroom teacher and under her supervision we were impressed with the meaning of order and efficiency. Our class was noted for its bubbling enthusiasm and lively class spirit. We never let our spirits droop even in our disappointments, for wasn't that contrary to the Franciscan Spirit? We can't even try to recall everything about our last year! Event just followed event until we just barely knew where we were standing. It was our most hectic year! Class rings, caps and gowns, senior portraits, the benefit dance, wiener roasts, exams, Senior ball, Senior banquet, the annual, class day, and now Graduation stand out more prominently than all the rest. The ceremony is over . . . the organs pounds out the recessional . . . we hle out, heads lifted high, hands folded in, graduates of St. Francis, prepared to face our future-ever for- ward, never backward! n
