My dear Graduates: We are living in an age when thoughtfulness for others seems to have faded away in the maelstrom offorgetfulness. So long as we are well fed, sheltered and clothed, why should we care about the conditions or fate of others? Indeed, do not many repeat like Cain, Am I my brother's keeper? In reading your dedication we could not help but thank God that there are among our teen- agers those who see beyond the pale of dreamy youth the sorrow and distress of their fellow Catholics. Their language, their customs, their political ideas may differ from ours but we are united in the Mystical Body of Christ which is the Church, in it we are united to Christ by faith and charity and through Him to one another. It is this faith and charity which causes you to dedicate Saint Francis, the Troubadour annual to those gallant priests, sisters and missioners, molested and per- secuted, imprisoned and martyred in communist dominated lands, to the encouragement of their ever faithful peoples, suffering patiently for our Lord, to the assistance by your prayers of those fighting men, women and children, who are risking their lives for the preservation of their Catholic faith. As you leave the portals of your Alma Mater may we ask that your dedication of the Trouba- dout be put into practical use by promising to pray each day for those whom you know look to you for alleviation in their sufferings Through prayer you must proclaim your solidarity with your fel- low Catholics suffering behind the iron curtain of communistrc countries, behind the bamboo cur- tain of China and the asbestos curtain of Russia You must show them that they are not forgotten, not abandoned, you must show your reliance on the power of God to help them This you can do through prayer Pray, therefore pray that in the not too distant future may come that peace for which the whole world waits with expectation May our Lady Queen of Peace and Patroness of our beloved Diocese heed your suppliant prayers for those who suffer untold torture and misery because of their belief in jesus Christ, Her Divine Son Bestowing upon you, my dear graduates your parents and teachers, my episcopal blessing and praying that you will always be a credit to the faith for which millions are dying, I am Faithfully yours in Christ JAMES J SWEENEY Bishop of Honolulu 'tr . My dear girls, The beautiful admonition you have chosen as the theme for this year's TROUBADOUR wants understanding before it can be followed. How does one let the word of Christ dwell in her abundantly? I am going to ask St. Paul to answer this to you, and let his answer constitute my message to you for this year. It can be found in the same letter to the Colossians from which you have taken your theme. Beloved, Christ has brought you to life, forgiving you all your sins. Because you have risen with Him, seek the things that are above Cwhere He is seated at the right hand of Godj, not the things that are on earth. Mortify your members, which are on earth. Strip off the old man with his deeds and put on the new. Put on, holy and beloved ones, a heart of mercy, kindness, humil- ity, meekness, patience. Bear with one another and forgive one another. As the Lord has forgiven you, so also do you forgive. ' In this way let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly. May His peace reign in your hearts, for unto that peace you have been called. Consolata Principal Religion IV Science Mathematics Our principal and teacher, Sister M. Consolata, has won the hearts of all during her two years at Saint Francis. We have come to know Sister as a counselor and friend. She in turn has learned the problems and difhculties of each of us and has advised us as only an understanding Religious Woman could. She has won especially the complete confidence and warm love of the Seniors, as she counselled and interviewed endlessly at all hours. As a reflection of Our Lady of Consolation and a double for the Mother of God, Sister Consolata has never failed to present us with an example of virtue, simplicity, and sincerity. The Senior Class of 1952, having been so much a part of her joys and disappointments, her thoughts and prayers, promise in return a never-failing gratitude and respectful love. ,l,IZ:1vfv- SISTER M. The organ began the processional and fifty-nine white-capped and gowned seniors of St. Francis, the class of '52, solemn, serious and serene for once, slowly moved down the aisle into their pews. Four years of high school blurred into one mental picture. Time had not waited after all. We were forty-one freshmen in '48, wide-eyed, curious, eager, excited. Sister Miriam, we'll never forget her, was our teacher. How much we owe her, and all our teachers, in fact. Remember the Sophomore year? We were dismayed to hear of our division into two classes but we got over that quickly. That was one year of concentrated studying and going through the pains of growing up. We enjoyed watching the freshmen going through initia- tion for we still remembered our own hectic week of humiliation. But nothing could surpass our junior year! Wasnlt the junior-Senior Prom just The Night? And look at all the socials we had-birthday parties, Halloween, Christmas Socials, the junior picnic and the square-dances! That's when Sister Gonzaga left and Sister Consolata became our new principal. We didn't know her so well then but now we wouldn't give her up for anything! Q When we returned as seniors that last fall-it was funny, we didn't feel like Seniors. We found out soon enough that being seniors didn't mean merely having privileges, and receiving admiration and respect from underclassmen, but it also meant responsibilities, set- ting examples, and practicingiwhat we preached. Seniorshipv'meant being oldest and wisest, showing reliability and initiative. It meant we had to be leaders, and good ones. The beginning months saw the school undergoing several necessary improvements-tar- ring of leaky roofs, repairing of poor plumbing, installation of auditorium windows, and remodeling of the dorms. We, the seniors, were greatly handicapped for a time by the inconvenient auditorium homeroom with insufficient equipment, but before long we saw the arrival of our new desks. Second semester Sister Celine replaced Sister Consolata as our homeroom teacher and under her supervision we were impressed with the meaning of order and efficiency. Our class was noted for its bubbling enthusiasm and lively class spirit. We never let our spirits droop even in our disappointments, for wasn't that contrary to the Franciscan Spirit? We can't even try to recall everything about our last year! Event just followed event until we just barely knew where we were standing. It was our most hectic year! Class rings, caps and gowns, senior portraits, the benefit dance, wiener roasts, exams, Senior ball, Senior banquet, the annual, class day, and now Graduation stand out more prominently than all the rest. The ceremony is over . . . the organs pounds out the recessional . . . we hle out, heads lifted high, hands folded in, graduates of St. Francis, prepared to face our future-ever for- ward, never backward! n I -,UFC . 2 S1-URLEY FUSAE SUENAGA Rider in the whirlwind and direct: the Jtormf'-Browning Blessed Sacrament Parishg 5 yrs. in S.F.C.S.g Class Pres. 4, Sec. 3, V-Pres. 2g C.S.M.C. 25,43 Troubadour 4g Ke Alaka'i 2,5,4, Editor 33 Chorus 3,4, V-Pres. 4g Camera Club 4g Oto- me Kai 3,4, Sec. 45 Dramatics Club 43 Aquinas Bus. Crowing achievement was the production of An Old Kentucky Garden, an operetta based on the music of Stephen Foster. St. Francis Choristers also participated in the C.Y.O. The racial clubs of St. Francis during their two years of existence, have contributed in bringing its members nearer to the culture and language of their respective nationalities. All of the clubs took part in the Aloha Week assembly, contributing songs, dances, and short plays. One of the memorable events of the year was the Chinese Club's presentation of The Dreadful Dragon. Of notable interest, too, was the clothing drive sponsored by the Caucasian Club for needy people in Portugal. Each club recited the rosary on various days of the week for the intention of world peace. As a combined club project, the racial clubs sponsored a dance to raise money for the school building fund. Through our nationality clubs we learned more of the brotherhood of men, unity of nations in one faith, and of glorifying the Mystical Body in that union. With fond good-byes and memories fresh in her mind of lazy or busy summer months, a typical resident student adjusts herself to a new temporary home and a new routine. Surround- ings and duties at first unfamiliar become a part of her. A life at St. Francis under the loving guid- ance of Sister Consolata is an arrangement where to live is to learnf' A resident student learns the gentle qualities of a well mannered lady, the ability to give and take, to forget herself in practicing consideration for others, and she applies these virtues. Thus she grows more like Our Lady in goodness and charm. Attendance at Daily Mass estab- lishes contact with God as the essence of her resident life. Frequent study periods insure opportu- nity for scholastic development. Of course, all is not work! There is Manoa stream for swimming under supervision, a spacious campus for outdoor fun, and ample equipment for both outdoor and indoor games. Nor is social life neglected. With parental approval the belles of St. Francis receive their prom dates at the front door after interested and efficient assistance in preparation, from fellow resident students. So goes the life of a boarder. It is a life safeguarded by supervision and rules, but a happy and fruitful life for those who share it. One of the privileges of boarding is the opportunity for frequent use of chapel. Daily we say the Rosary together and in Lent we have our Stations of the Cross.
