Sweeney Bishop of Honolulu My dear Graduates: Saint Francis' Love for our Lady is a are indirectly honoring the good Sisters, devoted followers of Saint Francis. We all know the intense love which sighed and yearned for Christ Crucihed. he could learn from no one but Mary, our Blessed Mother. He, therefore, developed a most intimate, hlial love and devotion to the Queen of all Virtues. All virtues shone most brilliantly, in our Blessed Mother, and yet there was one which seemed to be the object of her special care. That was the virtue of humility. This virtue is a kind of poverty in spirit, the love of being small. Mary, our Blessed Mother, always desired to remain in the background during her stay in this vale of tears. Thus to Saint Francis there was only one Lady Humility and that was Mary. By her virginity she pleased God, by her humility she conceived God. -Saint Bernard. Since our Lord and His Blessed Mother were the greatest examples of humility, Saint Francis endeavored constantly to humble himself, to be the least and lowest of all. What an excellent reason for us to follow in his footsteps, who are continually striving to be in the limelight even at the expense of another's sorrow or loss of character. Saint Francis could never restrain himself in his sincere and loving devotion to our Lady. He would pray unceasingly to her. He composed special hymns of praise, special prayers and aspirations in her honor. His praises for her were endless. Thus could be spend entire nights in praise of God and His Blessed Mother. Like Saint Francis we must come to our Blessed Lady in order ro secure a better knowledge of Christ, for she is His Mother, raised above all human nature for this noble purpose. If Christ so loved her, thought Saint Francis, ought not we to love her also. Indeed, we must love her, with a love that is pure, good and true. In so doing we will reap the reward of seeing her, whom we love, face to face. May our Lady of the Assumption bring peace and success to each one of you is my sincere prayer. most fitting theme for your school annual. In choosing such a title you who have guided your footsteps during your school years, as they are Saint Francis had for Christ. Not only his heart but his whole being In order to possess a better knowledge of Christ, Saint Francis knew Faithfully yours, JAMES J. SWEENEY Bishop of Honolulu BQZOUGCJ Sheplzeral K N x 'x K X , n echo from Um' Laffy If Our Lady of the Assumption were to write a letter of thanks for your having dedicated the Troubadour to her under that title, it might run something like this: My dearest daughters, There is a new and lovely jewel in my crown now. It is alive with the beauty of your bodies and souls which you have rededicated to me. Of all of heaven's lovely things it is among the loveliest because of your goodness 1Each day I pray for that day when you can see it for yourselfj and I want you to know, really know, that its beauty is from you, that in all the world there are few things more beautifulg that the color of your hair, the shape of your bodies, your smiles, your hands- they are only the media through which the divine beauty in your souls is communicated to the world. If you lose that divine beauty, the beauty that remains is drab indeed, and the mother of ugliness. And so may my Son bless you forever with goodness. Your Lady of the Assumption Father J. J. McDonald, S.M. Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools A,,..,.l , ,..,,n......- M- S... - A St. Francis Convent, source of our Franciscan spirit Sister M. Consolata Principal Spanish I Geometry Algebra General Science Dear Little Franciscans, This is a title you have chosen for yourselves and I have found joy in it. What does it imply? To the faculty at St. Francis it speaks of an ideal you have captured in this Franciscan atmosphere-an ideal to be cherished and to be lived. It is an ideal which should make you doers or active members of the Mystical Body. To be a true follower of Francis, says Father Foley, D.M.Cap., you seek to be real, to be good, and to be Cbristlike. There is no room for sham, pretense, or half measures in the followers of Francis. Are you real? According to the Seraphic Saint A man is no more or less that what he is before God. How do you measure up to this? The answer is the real you. Are you good? Goodness implies a generosity which finds its source in love-love for Christ. It is a kindliness of heart and a willingness to serve God and man. Are you Chriftlike? Does the world see Christ in you? Remember that the Christ of Francis was the humble Savior of men who emptied Himself and took on the form of a servant. Are you big enough to attain sanctity in the Franciscan way in whatever state of life you choose? God made this only you first for Himself, then for yourself and finally that you may be of service to others. Since you are the only you no one can do your work but you and so, I dare you to be Catholicg I dare you to be Franciscan-real, good, and Christlike. I shall pray no day shall pass without some effort to add to the likeness of Christ on the canvas of your souls. May the Lord bless and keep you near and dear! . After years of hard study and prayer in preparation these girls will take their first step to carry bravely whatever responsi- bilities they must shoulder, as Christian women, in a world of confusion and conflict. That graduation will close forever the joys and pleasures of girlhood days, and the realistic trials and tribulations of this world must be overcome by each girl who is determined to reach a state of perfection. We implore you, Mother Mary, that before each girl takes her step you will first take her hand firmly in yours and be a constant guide to each until -your Divine Son receives her in His arms, safe for all eternity. Without you, Mother Mary, we become lost in the shifting sands of the desert, but in you, we become the pillars of this earth. Let this step of departure strengthen the ties between your Divine Son and us, and further His honor and glory. Religious ACf7.U1.f1.QS During the past year, as always, religious projects have been the most important of extra- curricular activities. Many untiring hours were spent in seeking after the Kingdom of God through personal spirituality, and through learning to serve God through helping other people. Sometimes the work required sacrifices of a few pleasures or considerable free time, but the reward was the satis- faction of being one of God's instruments in doing good. We will always be a part of you, as much as the buildings and St. Francis are, through practicing your wise teachings and noble counsel, and carry- ing out your high ideals. How could we ever forget what the mind and heart and soul have learned! What can we say but Thank you for the advice and help of the Sisters of St. Francis! We graduates feel that the ideals of St. Francis and all he represents is the ibis of our future. May we hold him closely forever in our hearts, he who is a great lover of Our Lady and her Son. We beg you, the younger Franciscans, always remain true to your school and its teachers, who will never fail you. It now rests on you to keep the Franciscan ideals, to instill them, by word and example, in those that will follow after you, and to help build your future alma mater to still higher planes of education and learning.
