The focal point in Fundamentals is based on the three principles that guide nursing actiong namely, maintaining the individuality of man, maintaining physio- logical functioning, and maintaining a safe environment. Matters concerned with nursing are dealt with during this first ten weeks. These include the status of current health prob- lems, nursing's place in the health field, and techniques related to practice as problem solving, teaching, and communi- cating. The students also study the basic needs of man as hygiene, nutrition, rest, fluid and electrolyte balance, elimination and oth- ers. Also included are common problems of illness such as pain, Vomiting, and im- paired elimination from the gastrointesti- nal tract or genitourinary tracts. Ma.ny hours are spent working on the clinical area taking care of patients, in- cluding the terminally ill patient. Indeed, there was much to learn and many experiences in Fundamentals of Nursing. nursing . Along with this the students must learn the action and the side effects of the drugs. It's not an easy task at all! med-Surg I In this rotation the students study various conditions involving the nervous system and conditions of the eye and ear. They spent one morning at the eye or ear clinic Where they observed examinations made by the doctor. They also made visits to homes of spastic and retarded children. The kids en- joyed having us come. One week was spent working in the dressing cart room. The students went with one of the nurses working in this area. They were taught how to clean and dress various types of wounds. Linda Mansker visits with patient involved in auto accident. Student helps nurse set up dressings for a patient OOPS! Included in this rotation was one Week of study and practice in the IV room and phy- sical therapy. Both areas proved to be in- teresting and enjoyable. One day was spent in the Inhalation Therapy Department. In addition to these areas one week was spent in the coronary care units, where we learned to give special care to these critical patients. Here students are taught to read moniters in the coronary care unit. Deanna Moos decides to try out IPPB Machine. Debbie Fuller demonstrates hot wax bath in physical therapy. Physical Therapist explains how to operate whirlpool bath to Debbie Fuller and Mark Blackmore. Carolyn Perkins learned to prepare IV's in the IV room. IV's were often prepared here and then sent out to the floors. Students and Nurse Assitants find a lonely instructor to share their meals with! They spend two weeks in the operating room learn- ing sterile techniques and principles of surgery. Each student is assigned a patient to care for atleast two Weeks. The student goes to surgery with the patient and cares for them post-op. A complete care plan is done on this patient. Norma Hock prepares injection for patient as Mrs. Dusek Watches. Tours are led by students, who reveal almost every inch of the school and hospital to prospective students and parents. As you can see, even student nurses have some talent and imagination and like to ham it up occasionally during the tours and demonstrations. Wfffw , f wg, party time!!
