Across from the Prep stands the new Faculty ,, House of the Franciscan Brothers. I 'L 1' ,. ' tw w-mx the Franciscan, the teacher, preacher, wonder- worker, and the Saint of the whole world is a logical and even necessary choice for the dedication of the i955 San Fran. Our publi- cation seeks his special patronage as Anthony the teacher. The teacher stands as a key link in the chain of harmony among men, for a man acts on what is in his rnind. Centuries ago it seemed impossible to many that the humble simplicity of St. Francis could exist-and even cooperate-with knowledge, the food for intellectual pride. Francis did not frown upon knowledge, but he did condemn the confusion it could cause if improperly taught. Thus, the ability of the conveyer of knowledge determines its beneficial or detri- mental effect. His obligation is to impart a learning that enriches character without di- minishing love for the Divine. St. Francis himself appointed St. Anthony to reconcile the two apparently contradictory concepts, the lowliness of humility and the loftiness of learning, with this injunction, l command thee to teach . . . but in such a way that the spirit of prayer and piety be not re- laxed. Anthony did just this by his formula of respecting knowledge while loving God, for as he said, Sine Te-non est esse. The test of time has evidenced its success. Here we present a few glances into the life of our Franciscan Teaching Brothers. May St. Anthony, the first Franciscan teacher, who labored in the foothills of Padua, guide those closely following the path of his high vocation seven hundred years later in the tumult of Brooklyn. -'av' PM in 4, P we I A ,ll 5 Brother Paul still continues on faithfully in his teaching duties after forty-four years of service to his Community.
