awwaonious int-evbe enhance Amon ' men t' von ' ebucafion These became part of that lad who went forth every day Walt Whitman's line recalls to us the continuity of life s unpre ceived but steadfast movement from youth to manhood The man is often to be predicted from the boy Educators therefore have a great share in achieving harmony among men For our civilization has com mitted youth to their hands for a good portion of the living day in per haps the most impressionable period of existence a time of sensitive searching and hoping, accepting and rejecting Of course here, in one important instance our analogy with the cosmos must be suspended. We exist not as lifeless spheres in inevitable motion, but as creatures of God capable of controlling to a degree our flight through time, and conscious of our relationship with others who affect our lives. Thus if our youth is not to be a divergent element in a scheme of interdepent men 'it will be through an informed thinking and free willing personality, in virtue of which qualities they are edu cable, able to be trained and influenced Saint Francis Preparatory School purposes to prepare one for life The successful accomplishment of this purpose rests in a double re sponsibility. First upon teachers to equip themselves with intellectual and spiritual qualities worthy to be brought to those who look to them out of immaturity. Secondly upon the student to dispose himself to re ceive that which is offered him. lf it is to be accomplished on earth education then will be the instrument for perfecting the similitude between the harmony of the planets and the relations of men. 't The world stands again, unsteady on the rim of war. It would seem then that the theme ofthis year's San Fran is most timely, pointing as it does to the interdependence that exists among men. Let it serve as a reminder to all, and in particular to our graduates now taking their place in society, that each of you is an integral element in a great series, the sum of whose contributions make up the state of the world. Your education at Saint Francis Prep has been directed toward your bearing a useful weight of influence to whatever associations and activities allotted you in the plans of Provi- dence. You are better qualified to lead for you have first learned to obey, you have been inspired to ,work for harmony among men, since by coming under the sway of that pervad- ing yet never quite definable thing, the Spirit of Saint Francis, you know the gratifying utility of sharing in a common spirit. Following from this preparation, may your contributions to the relationships of men on earth be such as to urge them in that direction prescribed by our Lord, That they may be one . . . that they may be perfected in unity. 7
