But today, Christ is denied His birthday as the true meaning of Christmas is camoufiaged beneath the tinsel and wrappings. WE MUST CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS FOR CHRISTMAS' SAKE. Let us look to St. Francis of Assisi for the way to celebrate Christmas. It was Francis who, in his devotion to the Child jesus, created the first Christmas crib. This crib, which consisted of figures of the Holy Family, the shepherds and of the animals who kept the Infant Christ warm on the first Christmas Eve, has since become a revered tra- dition in Catholic Churches throughout the world. Legend has it that while meditating during Midnight Mass on this night in 1223, a Child surrounded by a brilliant light appeared in the arms of St. Francis. At the sight of this first reproduction of Bethlehem, Francis was so filled with joy that he burst into happy song. Thus, to this day we share in another of St. Francis' contributions to the majestic Christmastide-the singing of carols. It is a long road back to the first Christmas. The route is not direct, nor free from obstacles. Many will stand at the crossroads and beckon us down strange and confusing byways. But we must not be fooled by the seeming advantages of the Xmasi' roads. Rather, we must keep in mind the sacred purpose of St. Francis of Assisi and renew our devotion to the Christ Child and follow the star again.
