ge ditnrial cannot penetrate it. A short-lived spirit of love seems to appear with the Hrst Santa Claus tinkling his bell in our streets, only to disappear when the last ornament has been stored away. Oh, with what care we wrap those ornaments! Nested in cotton, they are hidden for a year-they are safe and we are secure. Yes, we take care with these ornaments because, for tradition's sake, they must last. The oldest ornament, a frayed, worn and tired star, that has seen long years of service, receives the most care. That star, from its position on high, has seen children filled with joy as they discovered the toys at the foot of the tree. The star has seen older people enjoy the memories of other Christmasses and the promise of Christmasses to come. That star, atop the tree, symbolizes Christmas as did the star over judaea, long ago. It symbolizes the Christmas spirit-the great sprit of love. If only we did not put away the spirit when we put away the symbol! If only we could lift that veil and let the star shine through. lt was nearly two thousand years ago when two weary travellers sought a room at an inn. A slammed door shut them out-there was no room. The story is horrifying to every Christian, yet, so many shut the door to the spirit of Christmas because there is no room for Christmas in june, or in August or in April. Christmas, to the world, has become a holiday and not a Holyday and, since there are so many other holiday excuses, Christmas once a year suffices. The staff of The San Fran of 1952 hopes, by this little reminder, to help keep alive.the spirit of Christ- mas every day in the year. The staff prays that people, the world over, will rediscover the true meaning of Christ's Nativity when they realize He is here to stay if they will but open the doors to their hearts.
