Eng man, Vicar 0 Bro. James, o.S.F- Principal 6 Q A stan! PrmclP I E Bro. Roger, O.S.F. xx Superior General i Bm- Aquinas O.S.F. The Producers Arise and go into the city, and there it shall be told thee what thou must do . The graduate of Saint Francis Preparatory School has been to Damascus and has been told what he must do. Faced with the challenge set before him by a godless world, he must be a standard bearer and lead others in the crusade against the enemies of religion. Catholic Action would be weak without his leadership, his courage and his talent. His convictions should be as strong as the principles of his religion and they must be voiced in the same solid, authoritative manner as the dogma he believes. Now that he is a man, he should take his lesson from Saint Paul and, 'fput away childish tl1ings g for now he is ready to take his position in the ranks of the Apostolate. His role of knight in the drama of life far outshines his squiredom and the schoolday conflicts. From now on, he must search and sift and evaluate what he reads and hears, he must analyze opinions and formulate his own and he must tirelessly pursue objective truth, patiently gleaning it from the chaff of words that overwhelms him. He must know the best defense against those who attack his Christian way of life. He must be strong of heart to wear well the armor supplied him by his Catholic Education. His suit of mail is of the best-his blade not fashioned by a terrible Vulcan but by the skilled hand of the Franciscan craftsman whose prayer for love and peace is embellished in every bit of it. His armor will not wear heavy if he keeps his heart light, his mind free, and his soul purei His religion is no talisman that he wears into the fight but the weld itself of soul and body--the integrity upon which his eternal life relies so much. Y, Gleaning the news from the four corners of the Prep and supplying the school with the known and little known facts is the job of the Seraph. This yearis editorial board was one of the most competent in the history of the Prep. The well- seasoned staff filled their posts to the utmost. Waging a titanic struggle to urge on school spirit to higher levels than ever before, the paper expanded, bringing on many new features and ideas. Under the direction of Mr. Willialli Reilly, Moderator, the staff maintained the refined Catholic editorial policy that gained for the Seraph an enviable reputation in the Metropoli- tan area. Editor Ed. Quigley worked hard to bring the staff into its own. Managing Editor Hugh Carroll ironed out the troubles that cropped up. Gene Hughes, Sports Editor, whipped to- gether pages that bristled with action and gave just presentations of all sports activities. He was capably assisted by John Adams. Achilles Schiano and James McDonnell were the principal news reporters going to all extremes, without a complaint, to get their stories. No demands for wage increases were heard from Bernie Wynn, Charlie McPartlin and Ed. Strauss the mainstays of the ball-bugs. Tony Schiano and Danny O'Keefe ate and slept on flashbulbs, cameras, film and developer. They supplied the paper with action shots comparable to the shots of the Hprosf, Some of the best writing that hit the pages of the newspaper, were contributed by Charlie Gliozzo, and Ward Lantier. Poet Laureate of the Seraph was Gerry Brady who supplied 'The Poets Corner with his lucubrations. Other news hounds were Tom O'Hare, Dick Ferguson, James McCormick, .lack Reese, George Hughes, Ray Gorman, Joe Cresci and ,lack Rooney. d bv Wa' undeil Chax.1eS -gtey S 0E.xnor, . 6 ,, Shih: EagoxieEliugiigsisilinllvusiness Manager , ' 6 . The audience is on its feet registering approval with great en- thusiasm. The critics who have re- mained until the last act, rush for their typewriters to sing the praises of a play which incorporated the work and talents of performers previously unkown. Mr. Roger Egan's masterful direction brought forth the latent talents to produce the greatest success which has ever hit the Franciscan stage. Special effects were handled by Pete Ruvolo and J oe Marino, staff artists. The lighting was provided hy Tony Schiano and Bill Bell- man. The script was capably writ- ten by Charlie Gliozzo, Ward Lan- tier, Ed. Quigley, Walter Luger,- .lohn Sargente and Ollie Hurley. The scenery for the sports sec- tion ,of the play was adjusted by .lack Doyle, Gus Respitha, George Clough, .lack Quirke, Tom Lynch and Gerry Wasselle. Mike Pagliucca and Charlie King were the prop men for the club act. Act III, activities, were dreamed up and handled by Bob Romandetto, Bob Minion, .lack Duffy, Reggie Ullman, John La- tona and Tony Mancuso. The last two also devoted their efforts to the musical score. Ken Jewell and Frank Flynn were troubleshooters for the troupe and secured that hard-to-find' negative at the last minute. Special notice is due to Joe Ma- rino and Bob Koehler who perse- vered and encouraged the company to carry on when things looked dimmest. Opening night was on schedule mainly through the ef- forts of J oe and Bob whose assist- ance to Mr. Egan, the director, was immeasurable. Yes, they were chosen as Co-Editors of the smash hit The San Fran of l950. ' 73 The Optimates Society and the Principal? Each name on the following pages has contributed towards making this production a success. How our gratitude to them might be best shown has been pointed out to us by Thomas Dekker in his Gull's Hornbookv, in which he takes special notice of the Elizabethan gallant and advises theatre managers to do likewise: The theatre is your poets, royal exchange, upon which their muses Know turned to merchantsj barter away the light commodity of words for a lighter ware than words, Plauclits and the breath of the great Beast. Since the place is so free in entertainment-allowing a stool as well to the farmer's son as to your templarg giving your stinkard the self-same liberty to be there in his tobacco fumes as your sweet courtier hasg letting your tinkergclaim as strong a judgment on the play's life and death as the proud critic-it is therefore fit that he, whom their tailor's bills make room for, should not when he comes be basely cased-up like a viol in the cornerf, . . . and so to them, at this premier, we extend our sincere thanks and invite them to take their places in the house seats. The pictures on them are off-stage shots taken at various times during the staging of our play. The cast feels that the fun and training that we enjoyed is reflected as much in these off-stage shots as in the stills of our actual performance. Many of the scenes from here and there of people and spots, cemented our four years at times, upstaging what we have in- cluded in our acts. Eitiignlggchata Veil The Camera Club The Camera Club can truly be labeled as one of the backbone organizations of St. Francis Prep. Rev. Brother Cletus, O.S.F. moderates the lensmen, O'Keefe, Barkelage., Gesumario, Gallagher, Maresca, Adams, Prosseda, Schiano, Reese, O'Malley, Quagliariello, McCole, Tullo, Hanrahan, DeRiso, and Greene, in their work. They are of invaluable service to both the San Fran and Seraph staffs in shooting, copying and blowing up their pictures. The Camera Club has gained a high position here, at the Prep, for their photographic work on the religious posters which adorn the school walls. One of the chief operations of the Camera Club is the training of underclass members in the prin- ciples of photography, so that they may carry on in the footsteps of the graduating members of the staff. Tony Schiano served as President for the winter term and Danny 0'Keefe has taken on the chores of top photog since Tony's graduation. John DeRiso runs one through the soup for the Seraph . X6 go? Charlie Austin's crash of the Crown Heighters line accounted'for the second marker Fighting for a lost cause J ack Wynne accounted for the Blue and White's only TD. ST. JOHNS Once again the Terriers heat their arch-rivals St. .lohn's. Twenty-five hundred were on hand to wit- ness the Terriers whip the poor little Redmen 25-6. Steve Walsh scored the first St. Francis TD on a 23 yard pass from Austin. Dick Witt then added two more markers and .lack Reilly's end run from the 6 yard line added the Hnal tally. Jerry Mayer's pagg :lo Bill Dwyer accounted for St. Johns only touch- own. FAR ROCKAWAY St. Francis once again defeated Far Rockaway this time by a 33-0 shutout. Boh Schaefer tallied the first two and was followed by Joe Longo who made his first of the season. Steve Walsh then intercepted a pass and carried it 65 yards for a TD. The last six points were accounted for hy a pass from Jim O Con nor to J ack Reilly. Tom Dockerey, Al Powers and Dick Witt ran up the extra points. At no time dur1ng the game did the Sea Horses come within 25 yards of scoring. Gerry Baxter NEW DORP New Dorp proved to he the season's Hrst prepared opponent to face the Terriers and held them to a 19-19 tie. Our favorite Joe Longo was the star of the game with 12 points. The tieing touchdown came in the last 5 minutes of the game and was accounted for hy Dick Witt. New Dorp's Paul Perfette scored 2 of their TDs and assisted in the other. CHAMINADE IONA Before two hundred Prep rooters the Franciscan eleven held the favored Iona Club to a 6-6 tie. A scoreless game until the fourth quarter, Charles Austin of the Red and Blue plunged four yards to climax a 68 yard drive. Joe Joyce failed to get the extra point in spite of two tries. 1ona's quarterback Steven Draudt accounted for their tally hy an 18 yard end-sweep. He also attempted the extra point but muifed it. CARDINAL HAYES One of the most heart-breaking defeats was the one suffered hy the Terriers at the hands of Chami- nade. -In the first quarter Witt scored two touch- downs and set the Red and Blue ahead but The Flyers were quick to retaliate with Bill McCarty scoring 13 points. Grover Nulty then scored another and Cha- minade took the lead. Trailing hy seven points in the last quarter Bob Schaefer threw a 39 yard pass to Joe Longo who took it across making the score 19-18. The Prepsters could not get the extra point and suffered their second defeat in a row at the hands of the Cha- minade Flyers. For the second year in a row a widely under est1 mated Cardinal Hayes eleven came across to whip the Terriers. Joe Longo scored two of our three tallies. The first on a 31 yard pass from Charlie Austin and the second on a line plunge from the four, which fol- lowed a 66 yard drive. Jack Reilly scored the third TD. Cardinal Hayes, sparkplug turned out to he Fred Rossetti who hit pay dirt four times. Mal Staf- ford scored two and was followed by Frank Martin and Jack Bianchi who also kicked the extra point. The game got into swing when Al Powers broke the ice of the so far scoreless game. It started when Jack Reilly recovered an op- ponent's fumble on the 49. Charlie Austin passed to Powers for a total of 46 yards and Joe Longo com- pleted the additional three hy' running. Joe Joyce kicked the extra point. The team was well balanced but lacked the experience of the Loughlin quintet. The Terrier Keglers got off to a flying start, and held down first place for more than half the season. They then suffered two successive defeats, at the hands of Loughlin and St. John'sg this coupled with the graduation of two key men, Joe Lynch and Joe Figliozzi, proved too much to overcome in the late stages of the race. At the close of the season, they finished in second place, three points behind Bishop Loughlin. Jack Battel, Bob Romandetto, and Jim Barrett were considered the most consistent scorers, with Dan Kelly, Bob Minion, and John Duffy round- ing out the squad. And they had good reason to, for they had more and better material this year than they have had at any one time. Disaster came in the middle of the season, when, with a three and one record, they were forced to postpone the remaining meets with Manhattan, Brooklyn Prep, Rice, Iona and Loughlin because of the severe shortage of water. Having defeated Power 45 to 23, Fordham Prep 50 to 16, and St. .lohn's 40 to 28, and having lost only to Cardinal Hayes 35 to 33, the Terriers were experiencing a good season. With Bob Koehler, Bruce Williams and ,lack Quirke as the undefeated Medley Relay team, Gerry Brady, .lohn Murphy in the fifty-yard dash, and the two Ed's, Strauss and Hunter in the hundred yard sprint, the Terriers were sure of holding their own. The backstroke was held down by another pair, the two Bobis, Koehler and Waegelin, who always assured us of first and second, since Koehler was 1949 Catholic champ and Waegelin had been giving him a hard race. McDonough and Cara- vaggio are their promising proteges. Bruce Wil- liams and Ed COX? Christman led the breastroke division with Gerry Baxter close behind. McCabe rounded out this corner. We could count on first in the fancy dive since we expected great things in the championship from little Al CMousieJ Monaco, who paired with Jack Quirke on the springboard. The 220 was skillfully handled by John Heinlein, backed up by George CDingleJ Amberry. The 200 yard Relay was made up of a group of sprint men, among whom were Gerry Brady, Eddie Strauss, Esq., Ed Hunter, Bob CWaggieJ Waegelin and John Murphy. Among the Varsity prospects for next year areg Dadone, Reilly, Butler, 0'Brien, Battenfeld, Cal- lagher, Maresco, Dillon, Murphy, Noonan, Jordan, Clark and McGovern. 1 if 'i ,Q 4 N4 K6 s Qui' 55 gun' glow ROW: Front Back 1. Volleyball The 1950 production of Terrier Volleyball did not reach the heights of former presentations. In three pre- vious years, the Terriers succeeded in winning the Oscar twice and securing the best supporting role in their other attempt. There is a long run of successes predicted for this year's troupe, by virtue of the valuable experience gained by the re- turning veterans from last year's cast. The cast seems well rounded with steady infield performances by Bill Nigro, Dick Duckett, Ralph Brescia, Don Masulo, Bob Minion and Matty Lossandro. The picket line is patrolled by Bob Schaefer, Bill Heaviside, Eddie Aquilone, Frank Swaine, Harry Beaton, and Mike Santielli. The men in the iron masks are Ben Tiberi, Tom Powers, and Arnie Letterig while the mound corps consists of Tony Hoffman, Marty Longan, John Cady, Eddie Daughton, Art Gunning and Tony Capece. In the opener against St. Michael's, the Cast was brilliant in their 11-5 victory, but in the next two games against St. John's and St. Augustine's, the players were ustage struck and, as a result, came out on the short end of 4-3 and 7-1 scores. Since then however, there have been many hours spent at rehearsals and the leading critics around the bor- ough have picked our troupe to straighten themselves and enjoy a successful Spring before the final curtain is rung down. is 3 -4 Scene 7 Ralph B F854-ja ke Frank Chick Keegan, coach. epS his average Tony Hoffman ace hurler of the Franciscan nine 0Vel- .30 0 151 Bob Schaefer Left Field 152 Front Row: Santuli, Langan, Daughton, Brescia, Nigro. Intramurals Between the main acts of the San Fran of 1950, our director of sports, Rev. Brother Roger, O.S.F., took time out to produce a variety show of intramural sports. In each act the best performing cast was rewarded with an Oscar,,' a small statuette of a sport figure. The Volleyball Oscars were awarded to Classes 701, winner of upper division, and 403 of the lower division. The brilliant performance of 701 was too much for the Sophs as the Seniors went on to win the school championship. Over four hundred boys competed for the Track Oscars and the treasured awards were pre- sented to'Classes 401 of the upper division and 301 of the lower division. William Hudson received the Bowling Oscar, with Frank Murphy and Martin Gillan receiving awards for the best supporting roles. In the boxhall tournament, Class 601 of the upper division defeated 701 with a close 5-4 de- cision. Class 601 then defeated 305, of junior division, to be declared school champions. Thanks and congratulations are in order for Rev.
