The principal objective of this religious group is to enable its members to follow the footsteps of Christ and merit heaven. As originally founded by Saint Francis, The Third Grder was the answer to the cries from the laity for a life similar to the Religious life but one which would not interfere with a family or other worldly associations. Many Popes have been members of the order including our present Pope Pius Xl l. Assembling once a month on the second Friday, the members gather in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels and receive instructions from Reverend Father Marcellus, O.F.M., director. This religious fraternity strives to make laymen adhere to the Commandments of God and Church and to follow a Christ-like set of rules for daily activity. This year's officers include Francis Kelly, Prefect, William Lanahan, Novice-Master, and Richard Barden, Secretary, and is under the moderation of Reverend Brother Benigus, O.S.F. 82 um ,QM x Q Sitting: Edward Campbell, Robert Kelly J Donald Smith Donald Regan Francis McDonough William Lanahan Fred Berlinghof Standing: Joseph Lynch, Joseph Brennan Thomas Berqus Bernard Hoganson John Ambery Guido Della Vecchia Frank Hunt James Finley llntlionian Club HE Anthonian Club under the direction of Rev. Brother Acquinas, who has success- fully succeeded Father Walsh, OFM., who is now teaching at Saint Bonaventure College, has as its object the fostering of Religious voca- tions among the Prepsters. Boys in all terms may enter, the only re- quirement being the expression of the desire to become a Priest or Brother. Each semester some members leave for the Seminary or the Novitiate. Through the Anthonian Club they can make more intelligent decisions and find themselves better prepared for their high calling. During Lent the Anthonian Club attended a Passion Play, Veronica's Veil, in Union City, New Jersey. Each member makes a five min- ute visit daily tothe Chapel at l2:2O in order to pray for vocation. During this semester the club Published a weekly mimeographed paper called The Text , dealing with religious themes. The newly elected officers are William Lanahan, President, Francis McDonough, Vice President, Carl Baren, Treasurer, and Francis Hunt, Secretary. 84 Ml QMYW ..- ., HE annual drive for patrons to finance the San Fran Year Book this year had a great response. FRANCIS returned to the gridiron wars this season on a formal basis for the first time since before the war. The season was a success, as the team met clubs of the highest calibre and more than held their own. Two new coaches, Messrs. Ed Tellier and Dave Fara- baugh of Manhattan College and Moderator Brother Roger, O.S.F., started the season by holding practice at Centerport, L. l., before school opened. The squad was green, but the coaches had confidence in their team. They adopted the T formation, shifting into the Notre Dame box. The backfield men were Jack O'Connor, Tony Rinaldi, Gene Kelly, Al Murphy, Larry Bonnelli, Jack Butler, Hank Schaetzle, Charlie O'Neill, and Danny Kennedy. On the line there was Capt. Red Mullowney, Bob Flem- ing, Fred Christ, Ed O'Connell, Paul DeSalvo, Leo Cames, Tom Surhoff, Steve Barry, Tom Malley, Jack Capper, Ken Tracy, Hank McKinney, Frank Kelly, Jim Brennan, and .lack Foge. After dropping their first game to St. Mary's of Ruth- erford, N. J., the Terriers traveled to Poughkeepsie only to be beaten by Poughkeepsie High. The Red and Blue then reached their peak of efficiency. They went from October Sth to November l6th without tasting defeat. The Franciscans tied Far Rockaway 6-6, Seton Hall of Patchogue by the same count, and St. Basil's of Sam- ford, Conn. O-O. They then defeated McKee Vocational of Staten lsland 6-O. The Terriers dropped their final two games to John Adams 36-O, and Mt. St. Michael's 27-O. The high scorer for St. Francis was Tony Rinaldi, who scored all eighteen points made by the team. BA KETBALL H wth Nic Ps C Me- Smsuv COB 108 HIS year's team was under the direction of Mr. Daniel Lynch who coached the famous Mighty Mites before entering the Army. The squad was led by Captain Tom Thomp- son who acted as the playmaker. Marty Con- way, Fred Christ and Joe Hughes led the team in scoring while Tony Pellarin and George O'Reilly filled fifth slot on the starting five. John Maher, Tim Shea, George Liddy and Phil McBride composed the rest of the squad. The team was hampered during the early stages of the season by injuries and did not hit its strides until later in the campaign. The highlight of the fourteen game league play was the Terriers 54-45 defeat of St. John's. This was the Redman's only league defeat of the season. The Franciscans closed the campaign with a terrific drive in the Father Reilly and Knights of Columbus Tournaments, The Terriers de- feated Rice and Power in the quarter finals of the Reilly and met La Salle in the semi-finals. La Salle nosed out the Franciscans 44-43. St. Francis then defeated Xavier 64-50 to gain third place. ln the Knights of Columbus Tour- ney St. Francis defeated St. Aloysius, Chami- nade, and St. Michaels. ln the semi-finals Power defeated the Terriers in a heartbreaker 39-38. Once more St. Francis captured third place by defeating Cardinal Hayes 44-39. With graduation St. Francis will lose Captain Tom Thompson and Tony Pellarin. The re- mainder of the team along with some members of this season Championship Junior Varsity will form a formidable quintet next season. The season was brightened by the play ot the Junior Varsity. Due to the lack of reserves, Jack Forge was forced to tend the nets for nearly every game, receiving some relief from Fred Mayo toward the end of the season. Jack Butler and John McCartin held down the defense posts for the entire season. The Terriers offense was led by Norman Diviney at center, Don Moten and Jim Merrigan in the wing positions. Tom Creem, Jim Mulligan, John Jerabeck, and Joe Loftus performed well in the spare po- sitions. Likewise great praise is due Fred Powers, Ed Kear, Bob Dunne, Frank Smith, and Fred Weir for their gallant efforts in braving the early morning practices and thus give the Varsity much needed competition and experience. High scoring place with 8 goals each in nine games. Although the team ended the league season in third place, the fact that only five points divided the first team and the third place team is quite sig- nificant and is evidence of what we can expect for next year, We hope to better this year's record of 5 wins, l tie, and 3 defeats. One of the highlights of the season was the trip to West Point and the 4 to O victory over the Plebes. Kneel ng: Donald Moten, Joseph Loftus, John Foge, Thomas Creem, Norman Diviney. The first team consisted of George Snyder, John Donovan, Francis Dowd, Cosmo DiTucci, Ward Poche, and Richard Diekroger. With difficulties in finding places to practice during the ln- door season the squad had a streak of bad luck. Although not qualifying in any of the big meet relays, in the Peter Stuyvesant meet in December, John Donovan took third in the mile run with a 4:5l. ln the Catholic Indoor championships and the P. S. A. L. championships George Snyder and Donovan finished fifth and sev- enth respectively in the mile. ln the indoor sprint Joseph Jankow- ski, Bernard Donato, John McCarthy, Jerry Flood and John Hegarty were entered. As usual there were the hard luck boys. Cosmo DiTucci, Eddie McCartny, and Ward Poche were forced to drop out during the season, but all came back for the outdoor season, During the out- door season the Brooklyn College, Boys' High School, the N.Y.A.C. meets, and the Catholic, Catholic Novice, and Private School cham- pionships found St. Francis entered. Mr. Pat Gleason, the coach, expects the team to do well in the outdoor season due to the large number of novices on his squad.
