The primary purpose of the order is to enable its members tofollow more closely in the footsteps of Christ, and become true heirs of heaven. This is accomplished through obedience to the simple rules of the Order. The Third Order, as founded by Saint Francis, was the direct result of appeals from the laity for a rule of life similar to the Religious life, but one that would not interfere with family life, or associations with the world. It has been richly indulgenced by the Popes, many of whom were members. Our present Pontiif, Pius XII, is a member. Once each month, on the second Friday, the members assemble in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels to receive informative instruction from the Reverend Director, Father Clarence, O.F.lVl.Cap. Each year more students prepare to enter the Third Order. Their preparation is under the direction of the Reverend Moderator, Brother' Bernard, O.S.F. and Reverend Brother Benignus, O.S.F. The Second Annual Concert given by the Orches- tra took place on May 7, l946 in the Opera House at the Academy of Music. One interesting and virtuoso piece was the violin solo Hzigeunerweisenw by Sara- sote, capably handled by Thomas Cacciola and ac- companiment. Although many were inclined at first to think of the Glee Club with derision, they saw their error after one or two practices. Both the boys and Mrs. Marie MacDonald their director, worked hard and long. After only three months rehearsing, they were considered good enough to give a concert in conjunction with the Orchestra, at the Music Hall of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The boys were proud of their accomplishmentsand all were lavish with their praise. This year, on May 7, the orchestra and Glee Club again gave a concert. It was held at the Opera House because of the great number who were forced to stand at the last one. It was sparked by posters reading 4'Beat Chaminadeln t4Kill St. J0e's! Yes this is football gab, and signifies the return of football to St. Francis after a laps of three years. Mr. Ed Pzwaro and Brother Roger took up the task where Tut Maggio, our coach of renown in former years, had left oif. They had nothing to start with but a hunch of fellows as 'GG-reen as corn of that well known play. Never- theless a few weeks later at Red Hook Stadium we nipped a heavy and experi- enced Manual team to the tune of 13-6. On October 27, coach Pzwaro ventured to Chaminade with his crew. Cha- minade is assuredly one of our greatest rivals and we were out to beat them good. An aerial attack against the Flyers in the opening quarter resulted in the games first tally with Red McMahon passing 35 yds. to the fleet footed Alle- gretti. A ground offensive put up another notch against the Crimson and Gold as McGuire went over on a quarterback sneak from the 12 yd. line. The final attack came in the last quarter with McGuire to Allegretti for another T. D. Thus we got off to a good start at 19-6. 100 G- sf' z -Qi 5 sl fill 5 S wig s ., ,,.s,. .4 v ,Fw . f .L L, ,,. Hard hittingkfrom the start, they duinbfounded us for six points in the opening min- utes of play. We caught on to them in the second half when McMahon, inter- cepting a pass, returned it 40 yds. for our first marker. ln the last quarter Bed completed a pass to Allegretti who took it over giving us our third victory, 12-6. Next on the schedule was McKee Vocational. On that brisk November 10, the Prep suffered its first setback, as a mighty McKee team put us down 14-0. Although we were constantly on their goal line, we were not able to take it across. ln the third period McGuire took an interception back 45 yds. to the one yard line, but there it stayed. In the final stanza, O'Connor to Allegretti brought us to the McKee doorstep as the closing gun sounded. The next week saw Brother Roger working his line with extra duty. He had Barry, Carotenuto, 0'Connell, Suhrhoff, 0'Hara, and Capper driving hard and hitting low. Pzwaro had Natuzzi, McGuire, Cahill, and McMahon perfect- ing the T and single wing formations. So came November 18 and our first home game. Before 2,000 at Boy's High Field, we met St. Basil's of Stamford, a team accredited with class and power. Though they romped 27-0 we gave them all the iight we could muster. Now it's allSt. Francis gridiron history but we'll remember the fellows who took the bruises to bring the Red and Blue hack into the football world. Mr. Nicholas Fiorenza, recently returned to the faculty, after receiving his Army dis- charge, consented to moderate the team. The season opened with a victory over St. Leonard's Academy. Then the team ran into hard luck and lost it's next five matches. This cost them, a first division spot at the end of the regular season. The team finished the season in fifth place. Captain .lim Heaney, was high scorer for the Red and Blue. He was closely followed by Lou Hundt, Bob Morrison, Pete Vobis and Bill Mullins. George Papa, Harry Gorman, Bob Rosasco and Gorden Martin were also instrumental throughout the season. 104 Q E , U M55 Q 1 gg 'QM Q Q ,fffg1.:'z my The campagin began with the return of the Terriers to Madison Square Garden. The team came out with an inspiring 46-40 victory over Saint Michael's of Union City, New Jersey, the team which the previous week had stopped Saint John's winning streak at 28 games. On February 9, when our team again journied to Madison Square Garden to engage Saint Peter's of Staten Island, the Farnciscans, led by J ack 0'Connor and Marty Conway, moved to an early lead, and were not behind throughout the remainder of the contest, leading at the half 23-14, and the third quarter 32-24. Marty Conway with his sterling work off the backboards and the addi- tion of seventeen points to our total was the chief aid of the Terriers. Connie Pagliaro was also a thorn in the side of the enemy throughout the contest. The team had the scoring ability, but the lack of height proved costly in many games. The Terriers roared down to the finishing wire, with a terrific spurt coming into the Knights of Columbus Tournament. Having compiled successive victories over Saint Agnes, Xavier, Saint Mary's of Rutherford and Saint Michael's of Union City, Saint Francis set out to gain its second leg on, the Leo J. eHickey Memorial Trophy, and its fifth victory in the tournament. Playing before a packed house, the Terriers went down to defeat at the hands of a much taller A11 Hallows team, 54-38. With graduation coming, Saint Francis will lose a student whose name has been synonomous with basketball at the Prep. J oe Mulholland, who has been with the team for the past two years, and who has earned the respect of all. who knew him. Also leaving are Tufano, Tiernan and Ryan, but the nucleus of the team remains ready to put Saint Francis back on the top again next year. r a K 5 2 5 4 1 A J Sf 4 E gi :P :fx 25 7 EA .5 W 1 3 ii 51 uVL'1'fiRiWf5w1mwN fE WM555B ' ' - f , , , ' - l . i 'WSI . -' Ha,.'? :f 4T??if5 S!ikf'3fi13fff3li Q 3 E B JUNIOR VARSITY Sitting: Peter Fitzpatrick, Eugene Roherti, C Standingrq Eancis Garguillo, Ke INTERMED nz g John 0Mahon H11 H1 IATE BASKETBALL ey Dame Kennedy George L g James Boyle Walter An l iddy Ra gim M1ch et eorge 0'Reilly, JO nneth Traecy, Joh seph 0'Leary, Daniel Curtin. The Red and Blue built up an early lead, and by virtue of a 44-23 victory, emerged the Brooklyn Champions. In the N. Y. Adelphi Academy was routed in the final dual meet which 'was 115 highlighted by the freestyle relay quartet of ,lack Keogh, ,lim Mehl, Dan Curtin and Carl Soranno. Having a service to offer or goods to sell, it is false economy to hide the fact from the buying public. How better to spread this information than by the means of attractively designed and printed litera- ture? The increase in your sales will prove the wisdom of your action.
