nta Claus hTom Meisenhcimco presents on Holz with a present from the Uthc boys College Smoker Down in the digs of the administration building there is a room called the Usmoker, and it merits its name; oxygen is at a remium. But wit and conviviality are not. Here it is that the college stufents mark off certain evenings for their masochistic satisfaction, parodying Cmirabile dictuy the classes, classics, and the professors, alon with the foibles of students and student life. Movies, refreshments, ant? skits make up an evening, which is generously s rinklcd with attic salt. The smokers are a necessary adjunct to college li e; they provide what griping must provide for the army boys; but they add much more than this sychological projection; they add verve and imagination, things which li e requires alwaysi WWW w pastime. retreat One of the most important activities of the year, at the seminary especially, is the annual retreat, this year held January 4 through the 9th. This is not a time for mere dusting off; it is the time when great decisions are made, when new directions and strong habits are indicated, when God's graces play fruitfully about the souls of young men. This year the retreat master was a diocesan priest, Fatherjohn Francis Brown, pastor of a Negro parish in Chicago. He had all the qualities needed for his good work: he was forceful, interesting, Wise. All reports tell us that Father Brown did excellent work, but those who know him are not surprised. Saint Francis was for- tunate in its 1959 retreat. NOWe-to make permanent those resolutions! 0 Page 68 to We iessxov.
