Groessel, MJL Monsignor Groessel, This dedication will, we hope, catch you by surprise. You were forgotten here, you felt; here, where you worked so remarkably for so many years. 'iA priest is a man devoured, the French say. You were devoured here at this depart. ment, your many years totally occupied seven days a week, your patience tried so constantly. your health nibbled away by the demands of your duties. But. you see, you haven't been forgotten. Much of you still remains; like food, part of the whole organism; like tradition, richly with us, but forgotten in its source. As we have you still in memory. keep us now and then in your prayers. The good work you began must go on. Very Reverend Louis E. Riedel, M.A. Played by ear. Father opens the football season. Into the Rector's office come the troubles of the seminary: the occasional discipline problems that get to the higher echelon, the transfer students. the maze of adminis- tration involvements. and the stray student who has a personal problem that must go upstairs. With all of these, and with other complications, the Very Reverend Louis E. Riedel manages to deal. and to maintain a composure and amiability that is remark- able under the circumstances. Such is the power of long habit, more properly called virtue. We can only hope. God willing, that Father Riedel can stand the wear, for he wears well. Page 5 Vice Rector Reverend Leonard T. Bu ch No. I'm not smiling! joannes-Eac-totum The picture above is that of. the Busch brothers: Father Leonard Busch and his brother, Father Leonard Busch. One works by day, one by night. One is priest. teacher, and master of discipline. with a maze of information in his head. The other is infirmar- ian, boiler-tender, care-taker, joannes-fac-totum, and general overseer. They are never seen together, giving the impression that they are one. But this is an illusion. Someday the illusion will be out, and no one will be astonished. Unless they turn out to be triplets. Page 6 I ; ?Q- M 274 p1 ua uect y Reverend James W. Doheny, B.A. . Herb Wolf is as much a part of our office as the typewriter; and he is as much a part of the seminary as a textbook. One just doesn't think of St. Francis apart from Herb Wolf. He is indispensable because of what he knows: students first names, addresses, past history of the school, the location of numbers of essential materials. He is indispensable more properly because of what he contributes to the spirit of St. Francis: his cheer, his ready smile, his banter, his deep interest in the students, his prayers. You just don't think of St. Francis apart from Herb Wolf. When the seminary begins to appear just like any other school, with the accent on discipline and study, it is Father Doheny who re-orientates the student, re- minding him that the seminary is primarily for the priesthood. This peculiar accent would be submerged in a number of activities, were it not for the constant vigilance and the spiritual leadership which Father Doheny exhibits. Through his hands pass the youth who will one day hold in their hands the destinies of the diocese. He directs them when they most need direction; he forms them when they are most responsive to formation. Father Doheny is in one of the key positions of the archdiocese. And he is competent. Page 7 4 Office Manager Mr. Herbert P. Wolf 9 His Excellency kneels at the Sanctus. Archbishop Meyer blesses the chapel. CC C Saccrdog Ma Only dedication to duty could impel gHUS. . an archbishop to subject himself to such thronging of boys, such signing of autographs, such naked, unashamcd, naive stares and smiles of admiration. It must be a bit like spending the after- ' f noon in the front window of the B05- ' ton Store. But His Excellency, the Most Reverend Albert G. Mcycr seems N i to cnioy the affair. Certainly the stu- ' dcnts enjoy it. I guess everyone does, 5 to bc honcst. A spiritual bouquet for our Shepherd. Page 8 THE REV. RUSSELL G. BECKER, B.A. Latin, German, Guidance, Director of THE REV. Bernard Fclseckcr Even though the mothers would frown upon the suggestion, the lads have need of confessors. They do get cut of line. The old Adam finds renewed youth in these young shoots of the tree of life. To supply this need, there are the professors and these amiable pastors, appointed from the surrounding area. The students will some day work in parishes, with pastors, and as pastors. It seems proper that these pastors have a hand in the forming of the student. Fr. David Ryan h Birthday. Christmas , Father! If all cannot sing in the choir, all can at least develop an appreciation for prayers sung well. The choir makes this possible by its good work with polyphony and chant. No one doubts that either of these forms requires much practice, and no one who hears our choir doubts that much practice lies behind the devout song wit which our choir enhances each service. No man who knows the true value of God's good creatures waters his own wine, and so you will look in vain throughout these pages for any criticism of the VIA. But then, we might counter that in vino there is still veritas. We must tell the truth. The mosr cheerful, talented, likeable, and industrious students work on the VIA. This entire book is apparent testimony of the caliber of their work. The staff, under the imaginative leader- ship of Ed Beutner, has prodded pages into artistic composition, and has worked carefully for me appropriate footline which adds the proper touch to a picture skillfully taken. In years yet unborn, students will reach for this book and re-livc memories which will come quickly to life again because they have been so skillfully presented by the staff members of the VIA, to whom we accord all deserved honor. If this sounds like something written by the advisor of the VIA, keep in mind that even he is bound by the facts. liSNILE! x HAnswer iAdsum' ! 71w ma Wed The more talented penmen of the school unite each scholastic year to produce the school paper, THE PENMAN. Their task is a. bit like that of a weekly news magazine or like that of mother the days after Thanksgiving: to present the old as new. Even though they are put to the dis- advantage of informing us about what we already know, these gentlemen do an admirable piece of work. This is best demon- strated by enthusiasm with which the paper is scrutinized upon its monthly appearance. Sometimes they even manage to spring a surprise announcement, just to keep us on our toes. Father Leo Seramufs deft hand is on the pen, to remove the lapsae, to suggest the proper phrase, to keep every- thing up to the standard which has won the PENMAN its nu- merous scholastic newspaper awards.
