Unselfishness, poise, teamwork, and pride. These are just a few of the words that could describe the success of the 1978- 1979 Varsity basketball team. In preseason play, St. Francis showed that they would defend their number one ranking in the CCS by posting an awesome 12 wins and 0 losses record. They won the prestigious james Lick Invitational for the second straight year, and then traveled to Carmel to win that tournament. St. Francis then came home to win the crown in their own tournament. The Lancer cagers had their win streak snapped when they lost to Riordan in the league opener. The Varsity then composed themselves and won their next 20 games in a row, eleven of those being in league play. They became the first Varsity bas- ketball team from St. Francis to win the WCAL championship as they beat Riordan in the championship game. In the Region l playoffs, the Lancers soundly beat Aragon and jefferson to advance to the CCS Tournament. The Varsity had an easy time of it in the CCS Tournament until they met up with Fremont in the championship game. The game was very close as it was decided by a lone basket. The Lancers were to represent the CCS in the Tournament of Champions to be held at the Oakland Coliseum. At this, the most prestigious tournament in the state, the Var- sity defeated the San Francisco City champions, Washington, and the Los Angeles City champions, Crenshaw. They then played the Oakland City champions in front of a near capacity crowd of nearly 12,500 people. The Lancers lost to Castlemont, but won the respect and admiration of all who followed them through their long season.
