gage? gag The 1978 edition of the Lancer football team astounded fans and critics as it swept through the season with an outstanding record of 12 wins and 2 losses. Picked to finish way down in the pack in the WCAL race, the team surprised everyone as they survived the league unbeaten for the second straight year. The Varsity opened up football action with three impressive wins over traditional rivals Sequoia, Cubberly, and Balboa. St. Francis' hopes of beating Saratoga for the first time were crushed as the Falcons won the close game 14 to 11. ln WCAL play, the Lancer machine quickly realized its goal of winning the league again as they beat Mitty, Riordan, and Homecoming foe, Sacred Heart. In the next two games, the Varsity squad overcame arch-rival Bellarmine, and then they played Serra in a game that would decide the championship. St. Francis coasted to their second consecutive title as they routed St. Ignatius, to finish with a record of 6 and 0. The playoffs were just a continuation of the regular season, as St. Francis rallied past Serramonte, Hillsdale and Monterey for the CCS championship showdown with Section Ill winner, Oak Grove. The game promised to be action-packed and ex- citing. lt was, but the Varsity ended up on the short end, 52-7. Thus ended the Lancers hopes of becoming the first team to win the CCS for two straight years. In post season honors, john Giagiari was decided to be the Most Valuable Player. Phil Tomac was the Best Offensive Player, while Durk Hagan was the Best Defensive Player. Bob Stoesser and jeff Patane tied for the Most Valuable Lineman honors. The Most Valuable Back was Gavin Carr, and the Most Improved player was Steve Sanchez. The Tim Swenson Me- morial trophy went to Karl Broussard. ln season opener, Lancers show why they're champions Greg French looking for room to run. French and Neylan team up to break line.
