The team is com- posed of 1 senior, 5 juniors, '10 soph- omores, and 1 freshman. Since there were very few league meets, the girls en- tered several invitational meets including one at Foothill college in which they placed second out of 14 schools. Though plagued by injuries to several of its top runners, the team was able to place second in the SCVAL meet held at Foothill college. Top finisher was jenny Fuller. The team was able to qualify for the Regional meet, in which the top seven runners competed. Although the girls did not do well enough to advance to CCS finals, the girls ran their best race with top times by: jenny Fuller, Shannon McCarty and Leslie Dunckel. The girls cross-country team is young and will only lose one member to gradu- ation, Cindy Grillo. Next year, the team should be able to improve its already su- perb record. Picked to finish way down in the pack in the WCAL race, the team surprised everyone as they survived the league unbeaten for the second straight year. The Varsity opened up football action with three impressive wins over traditional rivals Sequoia, Cubberly, and Balboa. St. Francis' hopes of beating Saratoga for the first time were crushed as the Falcons won the close game 14 to 11. ln WCAL play, the Lancer machine quickly realized its goal of winning the league again as they beat Mitty, Riordan, and Homecoming foe, Sacred Heart. In the next two games, the Varsity squad overcame arch-rival Bellarmine, and then they played Serra in a game that would decide the championship. St. Francis coasted to their second consecutive title as they routed St. Ignatius, to finish with a record of 6 and 0. The playoffs were just a continuation of the regular season, as St. Francis rallied past Serramonte, Hillsdale and Monterey for the CCS championship showdown with Section Ill winner, Oak Grove. The game promised to be action-packed and ex- citing. lt was, but the Varsity ended up on the short end, 52-7. Thus ended the Lancers hopes of becoming the first team to win the CCS for two straight years. In post season honors, john Giagiari was decided to be the Most Valuable Player. Phil Tomac was the Best Offensive Player, while Durk Hagan was the Best Defensive Player. Bob Stoesser and jeff Patane tied for the Most Valuable Lineman honors. The Most Valuable Back was Gavin Carr, and the Most Improved player was Steve Sanchez. These are just a few of the words that could describe the success of the 1978- 1979 Varsity basketball team. In preseason play, St. Francis showed that they would defend their number one ranking in the CCS by posting an awesome 12 wins and 0 losses record. They won the prestigious james Lick Invitational for the second straight year, and then traveled to Carmel to win that tournament. St. Francis then came home to win the crown in their own tournament. The Lancer cagers had their win streak snapped when they lost to Riordan in the league opener. The Varsity then composed themselves and won their next 20 games in a row, eleven of those being in league play. They became the first Varsity bas- ketball team from St. Francis to win the WCAL championship as they beat Riordan in the championship game. In the Region l playoffs, the Lancers soundly beat Aragon and jefferson to advance to the CCS Tournament. The Varsity had an easy time of it in the CCS Tournament until they met up with Fremont in the championship game. The game was very close as it was decided by a lone basket. The Lancers were to represent the CCS in the Tournament of Champions to be held at the Oakland Coliseum. At this, the most prestigious tournament in the state, the Var- sity defeated the San Francisco City champions, Washington, and the Los Angeles City champions, Crenshaw. They then played the Oakland City champions in front of a near capacity crowd of nearly 12,500 people. The Lancers lost to Castlemont, but won the respect and admiration of all who followed them through their long season. Each group did their part to make 1978-79 a year to re- member. This year, the Drill Team, led by captain Beth McDonough and co-captain jackie Swift, attended summer camp, learning new routines and perfecting their perfect timing. The five Song Girls also attended camp, learning and creating new routines to liven things up. Letter Girl captain Teresa Loney and her seven companions also put in many hours of hard work this summer to get ready for the busy year ahead. All three groups attended all of the football games and most of the home basketball games. The various costumes, voted upon by the girls and approved by the captains and Mr. Urban, lit up the fields and courts, so that things never got dull. And if they did, the cheerleaders were right there, ready to wake us up and keep us on our toes, With new cheers and BIG mouths, they kept us alive when we were down and cheered us to even higher heights when we were ahead. Hat Day was held on Friday, October 20, preceding Spirit Week. Students were en- couraged to express themselves wearing hats of all varieties. Sophomore Chris Pa- lermo won a ten dollar prize for the best hat. The following Monday marked the official opening of Spirit Week with Poster Day. Spirit Groups and the classes decorated posters depicting school spirit and the theme, We're Great in '78. Tuesday was deemed Brown and Gold Day. Students were allowed to dress any way they wanted fwithin reasonl as long as it was brown and gold. It was also a testing day, so very little spirit was generated. Traditional yes, but the band, Fragile, and the cool, exciting atmosphere led to the not-so traditional style of dress. Costumes steered away from the cowboy expectancy, and ranged from simple everyday clothing to the exotic outfits of the twenties. Fragile was hot- to-trot and although people didn't trot, they did get into some heavy boogying. It was, as usual, an evening that will be re- membered by all who attended. The dance was sponsored by all of the spirit groups and moderated by Mr. Robert Urban and Ms. Patricia Sullivan. The proceeds from this event will go to- wards next year's spirit groups and lowering the costs of their uniforms. An interesting point is that the dance was held on the same night as the final game of basketball's Tournament of Cham- pions in Oakland. Numerous calls were made throughout the evening to a local news station in order to keep everyone posted as to our team's progress.
