DEBATE AND FORENSICS TEAMS Known for their eternal verbosity, the debate and forensics teams are recognized throughout the Pacific Coast League as the post office men because of their special deliveries, dealing in debate this year with tariff and trade policies for the Western Hemisphere and in forensics with many current topics and abstract ideas. These two growing organizations, under the super- vision of Mr. Mqrtin Larrey, have made a science out of argumentation and a fine art out of oration. In the be- ginning of the course of developing these skills, the P.O. men have become familiar with many subiects of uni- versal controversy and interest. As Buddha preached, Right view, right aim, right speech, right action . . . is the proper sequence of the constituent parts of human improvement. l IM STUDENT THEATER XXIII!!! Billy, the personification of absolute good, is thrown into conflict with the sadistic Clag- gert, the figure of evil, in the very opening moments of the play. We follow the tragedy of this eternal conflict until it results in the destruction of Claggert at the hands of Billy. The tragedy then reaches its fullest fatalistic moment in the execution of Billy as the play itself closes. The story of Billy Budd is essentially a morality play with an unpopular moral-that absolute good and absolute evil must destroy each other. Thus it would seem that Melville's view of life is awakening an appreciation of the contemporary conflict as lived today. PROGRAM NOTES The story of Billy Budd deals with life aboard a British Warship in l798 in all its fullness of color and pagentry-the squal- lid life of the crew below deck, the austerity of discipline, the feuds between men and officers, the explosions of anger and treach- ery, and the ever present shadow of death. Our sincere thanks to the ladies for their invaluable serv- ice to the school. . N X f ' .Queeg a 4 ' o ' n ' n - I n .., ,., On February 18, 1963, Gregory Bontempi was summoned by God to his eternal reward. All of us who knew Greg knew him as a friend and as a model: he was an inspiration to everyone. So recognized were his virtues that on a question- naire sent to his entire class, Greg was the boy most- named as the student who influences me the most for the better. He used all of the attributes, or graces that God gave him with which to face life, to perfect himself, and these graces were many-a religious spirit, a happy disposition, a wonderful family, intelligence, good looks, popularity, and, later, sickness and suffering. Even to his death he was the exemplar of what we all wish to be. So typical of him cooperating with grace in uncomplain- ingly accepting his greatest suffering were the last words he spoke, Thank you. But Greg was not only a model, he was a friend. He had a quality about him which made everyone who ever knew him feel close to him and want to be his friend. Thank God that we were, and still are, drawn near to him, that being his friends, he can know our every movement, our every fall, and can constantly intercede for us. The Church encourages us all to pray for one until a positive sign is given of his sainthood. And we should pray for Greg. But, too, we should pray to him . . .we will never be refused. His beautiful life and his holy death make us pray: Our model our friend and really, our hero - Greg Bontempi - may God ever love him more and more. 1 A .gn v .,.s... It is better to fight diligently to live, rather than to lie down bravely to die. To be honest in my conviction, let me say ot the very outset, that first and fore- most, my principal desire is to win games. Secondly, it is my hope, through guid- ance, and example, to exercise a whole- some influence over the men under me, and to inspire them to seek and attain high obiectives in a well rounded and balanced life. Most of us need slogans, designs, pat- terns, and philosophies to cling to when the going is rough and it seems that life is more or less futile. A desire to win, to play on a team, submerging the personal self for the benefit of the group, to attain perfection, and to put their powers and abilities to the utmost will turn a merely mediocre team into a team of poise, judgment, determination, and champion- ship. Coach Aguiar. Mike Hibler-All C.A.L. Offense and Defense, North Shrine Team, National Football Foundation-Helms Hall of Fame, St. Francis' Most Val. Player. Mike Hibler, one of the finest football players ever to come from St. Francis, has brought great honor to himself and to his school. Mike will be long remembered at St. Francis as o stu- dent and a athlete, 4 Pat Reynold typifies Lancer offensive play against Riordan. S.F, shows strength on the first series of downs by power driving for a quick first. Then Reynolds went 45 yards for the Lancers first T.D. S.F. was consistent and tough on defensive all the way. St. Francis intercepted three enemy passes, one by Tim Rossovich who ran 23 yards for a score. Dave Riser was sidelined with an iniury he received in the Salinas game, Gale Miyahara turned in a good performance. He passed to Rossovich for a T.D. and intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards. Mike Hibler did a iob which started him on his way .., st., ' SER to the C.A.L. berth. Denny Salisbury, Ted Sivley were standouts on defense. This game was a team performance. Mike Hibler .aes for a long gain against Riordan. sei, The St. Francis vs. Serra game was rf-led by many football critics as one of the finest high school games to be played this season. The Lancers were up for this game, and they proved it by their determined and hard fought play on offense and defense. The ball carrying responsibilities were all Hibler's because Pat Reynolds suffered a shoulder separation early in the game. Thrills were often as the ball changed hands many times. The score at the half was 0-O. Serra scored in the third period on a Lancer fumble. S.F. scored twice in the fourth quarter, when the clock showed 13 seconds to play Dave Riser scored on an end run, and once by Sivley. Midway through the season the Lancers turned in their best effort, foreshadowing the C.A.L. Championship. ST. MARY'S lRA l xr ln this game St. Francis at least cincned a tie for the C.A.L, Title. lt was a hard fought contest throughout the first half, but the Lancers showed that they were a team that does not quit. After being behind at the half 14 to 13, on a T.D. by Hibler and a pass from Miyahara to Riser, they put on a great second half effort. After the second half kickoff the stiff Lancer defense did not crack. They were led by Sivley and Salisbury, again doing superbly. Jerry Dover blocked St. Mary's punt attempt and Mike Hibler carried it in for the score. Hibler again scored on o 2 yard smash after Riser skillfully directed the team into scoring position. J. C. Schmitz scored on a I0 yard run and Tim Rosso- vich added his third P.A.T. of the afternoon. The Lancer exubere ance is shown by the picture above. BELLARMINE Dave Riser scores the lone Lancer T.D. in one of the most hard fought games of the season. The Lancers played well but could not turn back the Bells who had to win to share in the C.A.L. Crown. Tim Ros- sovich who had been sidelined by a serious hip iniury was not in ac- tion. Mike Malachowski was a standout on defense, as he Iecl the team in tackles with 'I4. Mike Hib- Ier did the bulk of the running, car- rying the ball with his usual author- ity. Gale Miyahara, who was shift- ecl to holtback for this game, be- cause Tim Brown was iniured, did a fine iob. The Lancers played well but could not get the win they wanted so very badly. Pat Reynolds starts to head up field on a punt return as Riser and Soper set for action. The team, which showed an absence of depth, did almost provide the upset of the year in the Bellarmine game. Led by Joe Cusimano, Bob Masik, and the running of Roger Hibler the Bells near- ly fell. View tourney, and finishing with five straight victories including a thrilling 51-41 win over Bellarmine before the largest crowd ever in Raskob Gymnasium. The primary reason for the Lancers' fine showing was Ron Donovan, Most Valuable Player, second team All League, first Saint Francis player to score more than 300 points in one season l336l, and the tenth leading scorer in the C.A.L.-12.0 per game. The other guard position was superbly manned by Rich Farana, number two scorer-160 points, and the best defensive player on the team. He made All Tourney Carmel and Honorable Mention from the C.A.L. Dennis Reynolds was the big man in the rebounding department for the Lancers, seventh leading rebounder in the league,-296 for the season, a new record, and he made All Tourney Carmel. He is certainly one of the future bright spots for the Lancers! Terry Duggan, Most Improved Player, was a consistent performer. His record indicates an outstanding player next year. Art Chapman rounds out the starting Lancer five. He showed promise of becoming a great offensive threat in the year to come. John Coggins, despite his lack of headlines, has been one of the steadiest performers on the court for the past two years, No team is complete without its reserve strength, John Sabol, Bob Halderman, Jerry Dover, and Bill Fagan, gave no small part, for success. Coach Locatelli, in his farewell year, would like to thank publicly the Varsity Basketball team for its dedica- tion and loyalty throughout the season. Their determina- tion to excel both on and off the court was evident and indicative of fine basketball players. ,wild ' ,K ,ex -' sq i, ,S ' 'W 1:1 5 :j:Q?5?? 'fE' 1 .
