Belin Carl D ond Ram Timothy ding an St R on OUR COACH-JACK LYTLE y 3 Our coach, Jack Lytle, better known to area fans as NBlack Jackn has been 1n area athletlc compet1t1on for a great number of years as a player, official, and a coach It 13 1D thls last capaclty that he has become a real frlend to the members of Salnt Francls Hlgh School Jack took over at the helm for the Ponles 1n l9h8 Although lt took that whole year for the boys to get 1nto form, Lytle chalked up 3 successful seasons slnce then wlnning S8 and loslng 32 This re- cord takes 1ts place among the top coachlng ranks in the d1str1ct The year 'SO 'Sl won for h1m h1S most noted laurels, for that year he led his team to 15 wins and S losses and placed them 3rd ln the Erie Diocesan Tournament. S The Saint Francis Ponies got off to a good start by downing Morris Township M5 to 27 in the first game of the season For ward Tim Raymond paced the Ponies with 18 points winning column with victories over Morris Township and St Leo's St Joseph's, DuBo1s checaed a Pony rally and won hh to M2 in a nip and tuck affair The St Francis Five then met the other DuBois representative in Erie Diocesan competition and stampeded to victory with a 10 point margin h8 to 38 Again Tim Raymond led the way with 15 markers The ledger now read S wins and 2 losses when the Ponies were scheduled for their biggest contest on the hardwood that against Saint Mary's The Crusaders were not to be denied victory and, despite the shining performance of Phil Sorbera, left us on the short end of a h3 to 35 score After that loss the Ponies again started to gallop and defeated St Joseph's, DuBo1s, H W B , Sts Cosmas and Damian, and Brady But the Pony was finally corralled by the St Mary's Cagers in the last game on their home floor S3 to bl The Saint Francis Basketeers then took the road for five consecutive away games They immediately trampled Sts Cosmas and Damian S6 39 But at Ridgway the going was tough and they found themselves struggling to overcome a 15 point mid game deficit It was Pony Center Jack Valenza who sparked the comeback and lead the way to a 62 to S9 victory At St Cather1ne's the tide turned and the Red and Gold found themselves on the opposite end of a similar situation. An ll pdint half-time lead was shattered by the DuBois quintet who left the Ponies trailing h2 to 39. B.C.I. handed the team its last loss of the season but not before receiving a scare from the Lytle-Lads in the first three periods. For the last tilt of the season, St. Francis High journeyed to H.W.B. where Bill Geppert proved the key factor in a M7-32 win. This victory brought the final record to 12 wins and 6 losses, thus earning them the right to compete in the Erie Diocesan Tournament.
