Such is the case with St. Francis High School, for it too was a good and novel idea that because of a determination all its own, has managed to catch on. Fr. Justin, the inventor of the Franciscan school on Lake Erie, would have been proud, not of him- self, but of the fine young men who have entered this schools portals. On Thursday, November 10, it was the pleasure of Fr. Marion Tolc- zyk, past principal of St. Francis, and now Minister Provincial of St. Anthony of Padua Province, to ad- dress the crowd of over 500 who gathered in the school gym to cele- brate the GOLDEN JUBILEE, with a concelebrated mass. Following the mass, a most unusual procession of 550 students filed past Fr. Marion, thanking him for his visit and re- ceiving his handshake of thanks in return. .5 'l i .l ll I .1 .. I l As the students celebrated on Thursday, so too did the entire Franciscan community of Western New York along with their guests, especially Bishops Head and Benincasa, Eighty priests, twenty nuns, the St. Francis Mixed and Chamber Choruses and the Brass Ensemble along with faculty and friends, helped create a most splendid atmosphere in the school chapel. Befitting the joyous occassion, Fr. Adam Zajdel, alumnus from the first graduating class l1931l, pre- sented a light and entertaining homily during the mass. He spoke fondly of St. Francis High. His mes- sage was very clear: it was the early determination of Fr. Justin and his associates and the present spirit of excellence in achievement, which makes St. Francis High the suc- cessful enterprise that it is. ln his comments Bishop Head thanked God that the spirit of St. Francis has been here, in this part of the world, for these blessed 50 years. Q Bishops Benincasa and Head concelebrate with Fr. Provincial. Saturday Night over 500 people attended the St. Francis High School Parent's Guild Dinner held at Leisureland. The evening's schedule of events included after dinner entertainment by the SFHS Mixed Chorus, and dancing to the tunes of Gus Farrell and his band. Fr. Claude, who had graduated from St. Francis in 1945, was the honored speaker. ln his presenta- tion father felt that St. Francis High was and is a unique schooI be- cause everyone is personally in- volved. He claimed to have come to this realization during his term as a teacher. He continued to relate to his attentive audience how St. Francis has the spirit of the poor man from Assisi. . .and all that St. Francis High does is a reflection of that spirit. St. Francis entitles its students to an experience that can't be equalled at any other school . . . because it not only helps individu- als grow in mind but in spirit also. ,2 nd . ...o Fr. 'NJN DEDICATION The Year Book Dedication Com- mittee proudly and jubilantly memorializes it's Golden Jubilee Edition by saluting Mr. Robert Tor- galski, who at the age of eighteen, initiated his coaching career under the tutelage of Fr. Rufinus Niedz- wiecki on the St. Francis High School Athletic Staff in 1961. Known to the students as Coach T , he was an outstanding All-Cath- olic athlete in football, basketball, and baseball at Ryan High School. A thoroughly alive person, Robert Torgalski, represents the standard of excellence as a Coach and Physi- cal Education Instructor combining knowledge of his subject and meth- od with concern for the individual student. Continually in a process of educating himself, he attends physical education courses, assists at various sport and health clinics and camps at various local colleges and universities. He is respected and admired by all who work with him. During the past sixteen years, he has served as both Junior Varsity and Varsity Coach in football, bas- ketball, and baseball, and as Physi- cal Education Instructor and Coordinator. lt is, however, as bas- ketball coach that he has excelled. ln his seven years as coach of the Junior Varsity, Bob's cagemen posted a cumulative record of 98 wins, 25 losses, with two undefeat- ed championships. The Varsity Team, currently referred as The Big Red Machine , under his lead- ership, has never finished lower than fourth place: finishing second three times and won three division- al championships posting 97 victo- ries and 33 losses since 1969. Coach T has guided his teams to eight consecutive appearances in the Manhattan Cup Playoffs, only to lose in the semifinals or finals. ln 1969, he was appointed Ad- ministrative Assistant and Director of Athletics at St. Francis. During the past eight years as Athletic Di- rector, all St. Francis teams have drawn praise for their poise, style, dress, and discipline. He has shown concern and assumed the responsibility of providing academ- ic assistance to help his players maintain the school's high scholas- tic standards. He has also orga- nized and initiated the Girl Cheerleading Corps, a wrestling team, a swimming team, a weigh- tlifting club, an isometric team, a hockey team, a soccer team, and one of the finest summer sports schools in the area. His latest ac- complishment is the inauguration of the St. Francis High School Hall of Fame. Robert Torgalski is a dedicated, responsible, hard-working individu- al who has helped build a fabulous- ly modern physical athletic complex and program. These quali- ties, plus the additional intangibles used as criteria of greatness, can only be instilled by a great leader. The perpetuation of the Franciscan academic and athletic tradition of excellence and perfection seems a certainty as long as Coach T is the sparkplug of the Big Red Machine. W fs WRESTLING The St. Francis High School 1977-78 wrestling season was marked by a repeat performance of the dedication and determination which in past years have made us come to expect from our wrestling team. The team, in the face of dis- couraging odds and injuries which disabled many of our veteran wres- tlers, continued to display their loy- alty and courage throughout the season. Coach Mike Carvelli epitimized the spirit of his team during the long and disappointing season by never losing hope and always look- ing ahead with optimism. Special mention should be given to those team members who literal- ly risked life and limb for the sake of the team, which include: Mike Courtade, Steve Reimondo, Jim Koch, and Rich Bett lwho were all injured during the seasonl, Bob Bannister, Goerge Ferris, Dick Siko- ra, Jim Rye, Dave Norton, Tom Meade, Charlie Tedesco, Al Couri- er, Dave Bennett, Dan Phillips, Gary Wisnewski, and Bob Godzuk. VARSITY GRID Opening the season with a 40-O romp over Mindzenty, this year's St. Francis Varsity Football Team ended the season with a 5-won 4- lost record. Head coach Farace, with coaches Herman and Komen- da, gave the team a new spirit and desire to win. The team members again proved their talents this Homecoming Game against St. Mary's of Lancas- ter, which ended in a 21-8 victory. By the fourth game, our offense rolled up 81 points, and our de- fense, known as the Junkyard Dogs , had given up only 8. The next two games proved to be de- feats to the Red Raiders by DeSales and Baker. However, the team gave an excellent performance against O'Hara, who were defeated 48-6. The Raiders suffered a heart-break- ing loss to Canisus but ended the season with a 28-6 victory against cross-town rival Hamburg High School. Outstanding performances were given by Don Thomas, who had several punt and kick return touch- downs, Tony Singleton and Bruce Hoelzl, both with over 100 yards rushing per game: Dan Dreyerp Jeff Blair: and the front four of both the offensive and defensive lines. The entire team, especially the outgoing Seniors, should be great- ly commended for its magnificent display of talent and sportsman- ship. The following week the team went on to trounce Timon, under the lights at the St. Francis Home field, 48-O. The entire team played excellently, especially Dave Neav- erth, Mike Leavell and Kevin Gar- vin. Arch rival Baker-Victory fared no better and was defeated on their own turf, 27-O. ln the final game of the year, the Junior Varsity was not about to change their strategies and went on to defeat Canisius 30-6. Mayer puts it up. The Varsity Red Raiders captured the Smith League basketball cham- pionship with a league record of 13 -1. The team was characterized by a well balanced offense and a hus- tling defense. The offense was led by senior tri-captains: Jim Dono- van, Cleo Weeks, and Dan Mayer. Jim Donovan set a school scor- ing record by netting 42 points in a 106-63 trouncing of Notre Dame. Dan Mayer provided consistent outside shooting and was responsi- ble for a last second victory over Walsh with a 40 foot jump shot at the buzzer. Cleo Weeks, besides getting his share of points, played tough de- fense, usually covering the other team's top scorer. Coming into his own this year was junior point guard, Eric Franz. Eric's inspirational play led the de- fense and set an example for his teammates to follow. He also led Coach T. the team in assists and steals. Senior Tony Singleton rounded out the starting five. Tony provided rebounding strength at both ends of the court and made several key plays late in the season to keep a 12 game winning streak in tact. The Raiders ran more this year than in the past and in doing so needed a strong bench. Providing that extra strength were seniors: Mike Quinn, Mike Orlando, Dan Henry, Joe Poturalski, and Ken Ni- cholson, juniors: Johnny Mann, Bri- an Buccieri, Doug Giacomoni, and Nick Charlap, and freshman Bill Kane. ln addition to returning under- classman, Coach Toragalski can count on players from this year's championship J.V. team and a su- perb freshman team to put to- gether another championship team. 96 plans the strategy. The show, presented March 9, 11, and 12, was a sell- outs, and proved to bring much en- joyment to both the audience and the performers with such spirited numbers as Luck Be a Lady and Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat The show itself was about the an- tics of two gamblers - Nathan De- troit and Sky Masterson. Nathan, the reluctant fiance of Adelaide, runs a floating crap game but he is in a financial pinch when he has to pay to rent a playing room. He makes an apparently sucker bet with Sky that pious Sarah Brown will not go to Cuba with him. Sky, mastering all his resources, coaxes Sarah down to Cuba for a day, where they realize their affection for each other. When they return, Sarah finds out that Nathan used her mission house for the game. Sarah turns on Sky, and Adelaide on Nathan because of the game. As fate has it, however, Sarah and Sky, and Nathan and Adelaide marry at the end and all the guys and dolls are happy once more. Playing Nathan Detroit was James Kunkemoeller. Sky Master- son was played by Steve Bystran. Adelaide was Tammy Hayes and Sarah Brown was Martha Grzes. Other noteable performances were by: Fred Lapp as Lt. Brannigan, Mi- chael Maglich as Arvide, Lee Har- tung as Big Julie, Don Thomas as Harry the Horse, Tracy Vogt as Gen. Cartright, Joe Russo as Nicely Nice- ly, Dan Neaverth as Benny, Ste- 105 phen Nicaise as Rusty, and Andrea Adamski as Mimi. The guys and dolls who were the cast were underthe direction of Mr. James B. Warren, director, Mr. David Nease, musical director, Mr. Joseph Gawron, conductor and Mr. Robert Buchheit, technical staff di- rector. Special thanks also go to Mrs. Patricia Oreskovic, assistant director and Miss Nancy Jo Scal- ice, choreographer. The technical staff once again gave of their time and talents to build our sets and our stage props. The 42 members of the orchestra come from our school and area pri- vate high schools. These musi- cians' abilities combined to provide excellent accompaniment. All efforts combined produced a highly professional and worthwhile show for all those involved in this, the largest single event on our cam- pus. w - .., Q' 5. V 'k.wg'wwQN 'wa S! S 'W , Q K' 2. ,, . The team, coached by Mr. Robert Torgalski and Mr. Tom Pasternak, ended its season with a 1 1-won, 1-loss statistics to clinch the Smith League Championship. In the Georgetown Cup Playoffs, the team came in second place. They had defeated Canisius High School in the first playoff game and emerged victoriuos again over St. Joe's in the second, but lost to Cardinal Mindszenty in the Third game playoff. Seniors Bruce Sage and Paul Schneeberger, Juniors Jim Buyea and Ken Nicholson received first team All-Catholic honors. Bruce Sage was honored as the Most Valuable Player, and Jim Buyea was honored as Most Improved Player. With the outstanding performances of Bruce Sage, Harry Jones, and Paul Schneeberger, and the excellent efforts of the entire team, this group of ball players showed that the St. Francis spirit continues to grow throughout all athletic endeavors. n f 1 ,-wail 'L-4 ' ' V,' I V 'C Q .. 'Q The fourth annual Saint Francis Winter Carnival began with an opening mass celebrated by Fr. Patrick, which was followed by a rock-dance in the activity center. The carnival events were held Jan. 7th through Feb. Znd. They in- cluded such activities as a roller skating party, pep rallies, faculty! senior volleyball game, toboggan party at Chestnut Ridge, a square dance with Loyd Miller as caller, and numerious dances scheduled every week. Miss. Karen Kazor was crowned Winter Carnival Queen, the first in history of the Winter Carnival. Aside from these highlights numer- ous sporting events completed the schedule. The height of the Winter Carnival was the Semi-Formal held, with 106 couples attending who danced to the music of STRA- TUS. It began with a memorable mass celebrated by Fr. Kenneth in our chapel. Due to the imaginative decorations the Hall took on a win- try atmosphere. The carnival was an overwhelming success. Richard, the members of the yearbook crew write, type, make posters, and piece together the agonies and es- tacies of 1978. This is done through the combined efforts of three departments. The financial staff, which handles the patron drive and many other money trans- actions to make the yearbook pos- sible, the copy staff, which takes countless hours writing, rewriting, and perfecting articles that appear in the book itself, and the layout staff, which has the most difficult task of arranging, editing, and putting together the book itself, page by page what you see before you. Not to be forgotten, of course, are the photos contributed, made possible by the Photography Club, headed by Steve Nicaise. lnnovationsin the presentannual include color photographs, a sec- limi tion devoted to past and present Jubilee celebrations, numerous pages of artwork and graphics, special effect divided pages, per- sonalized copies, and the theme The Road Not Taken presented poetically and pictorally through- out the book. This year especially will want to be remembered in a yearbook as it was the 50th Jubilee Year of our school. The entire staff consisted of: Steve Nicaise, Ken Schmitt, Randy Zakrzewski, Warren Hebert, Bill Slomka, Joe Wittmeyer, Joe Russo, Mike Maglich, Glenn Briggs, Dan Hennessy, Mark Lee, Randy Kielt, Ron Hayes, Chris Blandin, George Northem, Cookie Menendez, Greg Michalek ,John Riga, Mark Gillem, Doug Daniels, Eric Doherty, Joe Margarone, John Wichman, Carol Johengen, Mark Frazier, Tony Nowicki, Bill Seitter, Jerry Mead, Richard Pytak, lSteve Bystranl, and Jim Donovan. aw x I 6513 53 69675 6 ZFFRWTQF .n If - 1 7 PHOTO One of the mainstays of the Saint Francis Crusader is the Photogra- phy Department. This fun filled week started on Thursday, September 22 when the Folk Com- mittee sponsored a Night of Enter- tainment. On Tuesday, September 27 an old-fashioned square dance was held in the gym featuring Lloyd Miller as the caller. The following evening, there was a roller skating party at Carousel Roller Rink. The turnout was so great that the management couldn't supply enough skates for the crowd. Thursday, September 29 the Seniors lost the title as volleyball champs when they were defeated wt I-. .. gf ff' 9 if J by the faculty in two straight games. Friday, the students voiced their support, at the annual pep ral- ly, for fall sports. Class skits were presented and the Homecoming Queen candidates were intro- duced. Saturday night, student spirit reached its climax when the Varsity football team defeated St. Mary's of Lancaster by the score of 21-8. For the first time in nine years we had something to dance about as the traditional victory dance was held in the Activity Center. The week of festivities came to a close when Barbara Chitla, a student at Frontier High School, was crowned Homecoming Queen. This year's delegation represented Egypt. The representatives tried to present Egypt's view of the prob- lems faced by them and their inter- ests in worldwide discussion. One of these worldwide decisions was Egypt's valiant attempt to negotiate a peace treaty with lsreal. Schools through out the Middle Atlantic Region brought their re- spective delegations to the General Assembly of Nations to express their country's views on important problems. Here, resolutions were debated, and pressing world issues discussed. The procedure modeled in pass- ing resolutions paralleled the actu- al process used in the United Nations. Editors: John Godzuk, Randy Zakrzewski, and Greg Olma worked long hours to make this year's editions a suc- cess. The new Banner provides its readers with humorous and infor- mative outlooks on sports, school functions, extra curricular activities and student life. The Banner im- proved its quality of accurate re- porting by including new columns and added feature stories which encouraged its subscribers to read. Assisting the editors were: Dan Hennesey, M. Yet another opportunity on cam- pus is the Language Club, which is moderated by Br. Francis, who de- scribed it as a chance for our stu- dents to show their creativity in the languages they study here at St. Francis. This is the third year for the club, each year being more suc- cessful than the previous one. The club has two main objectives. To present a multilingual Christmas benediction service which includes Christmas carols which were sung in Spanish, French, and Latin. In- strumental in the preparation and performance of these carols were Br. Francis, Fr. Robert, and Mr. Nease. lt's second objective, which re- quires both time and energy on the part of the members, is to prepare LAN entries for the competition in the annual St. Bonaventure's Lan- guage Competition. This competi- tion involves over 200 high schools from New York State. These entries range from puppet shows to live dramatic scenes, and various cul- tural exhibits pertaining to one's specific language. Much hard work and determination resulted in the awarding of a third place ribbon to the Spanish participants of 1975, and also in Spanish second place in last years' competition. An example of the club's out of the classroom activities was the organization of a trip to Spain last summer. For all involved, the club contin- ues to be a most rewarding and en- joyable experience.
