Challenges come to nations and to individuals, and nations and individuals have conquered and survived, or yielded and disappeared from the face of the earth, according as they met the challenge or shirked it. Nations fell because of their failure to meet the challenges that were thrown at them by the circumstances of the times. Individuals are continually challenged, and their response, their reaction to the challenge will inevitably shape their lives beyond the possibility of later diverting it into other channels. Famous men of ancient and modern times succeeded in meeting the challenge thrown at them, because each and every one of them had an ideal and worked constantly to achieve that ideal. They had faith in the value of their ideal and confidence in their ability to ultimately achieve it. Graduates of '471 To many a young man it appears so much easier to follow the path of least resistence, so much easier to drift along with the tide then to battle against itg so much more pleasant to accept the attiude of the crowd instead of resisting it and bringing the crowd to the Christian way of thinking! Here at St. Francis, for four full years you were constantly taught not to be too complacent: not too lazy to exert yourselves sufficiently to over- come the obstacles that lie between you and the achievement of your ideal! You have been taught that the greatest weapon that you can have in this striving to achieve your goal, in answering the challenge of life, is FAITH. Faith in God, faith in your fellowmen and faith in yourselves. Faith in your- selves because you were put there for a purpose. For, the Omnipotent God who placed you here would not have done so without reason and without endowing you with the ability to fulfill His purpose, if you were anxious enough to do so. Look about today at the successful men you know, and you will find out that faith in God, in themselves, in the rightness of the ideal that they have set for themselves, and in their ability to achieve it, were the basis of their success. Our task has been completed. This inspiring faith, we have been trying constantly to imbue into your hearts and souls during your stay at St. Francis. We feel sure that each and everyone of you will achieve his ideal, for yours is the heritage of character and intelligence to which all St. Francis boys are heirs. May God bless you, one and all. Fr. Pacific Baldyga, Principal and THE FACULTY
