For, it was in the -2 2 ',fr - f.f3F'Z.'f-'Zi '.-- minds of these men that the idea of a Saint Francis was conceived. Conceived of a desire to aid their fellow man it was nourished, in the years which followed, by the teachings of charity of Christ. lust a quarter of a century ago, these men, and all those loyal friends who have so Whole-heartedly supported them in their efforts, were called to the cause of St. Francis by their leader, Father Justin. They had come with a desire to aid in founding an institution where youth could obtain a religious, moral and intellectual training. They realized, as all good Christians do, that all gifts and talents must be justly used and cultivatedy that a knowledge of many things is necessary in life and, this above all, that religion is not least of these: that character is more important than culture. Night after night and into the small hours of each morning they thought and planned, they tortured their minds for ways and means to fulfill their great desire. They believed their cause was a just one, and because they believed in it firmly, it gave them courage to see it through. Their efforts finally bore fruit when finally, because of loyal support, they were able to break ground for the new school in lune of l925. September of that same year witnessed the laying of the cornerstone. In November of 1926 the completed structure was blessed and the portals of St. Francis were opened to receive its first student body. Despite any opinions to the contrary, St. Francis has always opened its doors to the rich, to the poor, to the more and to the less talented. ln order to especially aid the poor amongst the students, the drivers have, year in and year out, conducted their Annual Masquerade Ball. The funds derived from this charitable drive have been used to promote the education of those unfortunate lads who, though blessed with outstanding intellectual talents, have been poor in earthly goods. To each and everyone of these St. Francis has offered an academic, college entrance course: all this and more, it can and does offer its students because it is chartered by the University of the State of New York and because of its affiliation with the Catholic University of America. To Father Iustin, therefore, and to his Committee of Drivers ,to whom this book is dedicated, we offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks for their many kindnesses in behalf of our institution and its student body. May they ever continue to favor us with their good will. May the good Lord, whose cause of charity they postulated, justly reward them for all their efforts of the past, the present and the future.
