Since the child is endowed with physical, intellectual and moral capacities, all these must be developed harmoniously. An education which quickens the intel ligence and enriches the mind with knowledge, but fails to develop the will and direct it to the practice of virtue, may produce scholars, but it cannot produce good men. An education that unites intellectual, moral and religious elements is the best training for citizenship. lt inculcates a sense of respons ibility, a respect for authority and a consideratness for the rights of others which are the necessary foundation of civic virtue - more necessary where as in a democracy, the citizen, enjoying a larger freedom, has a greater obligation to govern himself. The three elements comprising o' sound and beneficial education - intel lectual, moral and religious - have been conscientiously fostered by the Catholic Clergy and Laymen of the Diocese of Buffalo, which observes its centennial anniversary of existence. Throughout these one hundred years numerous institutions have been erected for the scientific and religious training of the Catholic Youth. Throughout the years, these lnstitutions of Learning have afforded its students a moral and religious education, teaching them how to become good citizens, good Members of the Society. Saint Francis High School, one of the many Catholic High Schools in the Diocese of Buffalo and under the able tutelage of the Franciscan Fathers, in pursuing the principles of education, teaches respect for authority, a sense of responsibility and a consideratness for the rights of others. As Graduates of the Class of '47, you have received an education, which consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do in order to obtain the sublime end for which he was created. Be loyal to this essential quality of education! Be faithful Members of the Catholic Church and loyal citizens of the United States! May the Lord bless thee and keep thee. May He show His face to thee and have mercy on thee. May He turn His countenance to thee and give thee peace! FR. LAWRENCE M. CYMAN, O. F. M. Conv. Minister-Provincial

J nf ,,+ .Q The Very Reverend Founder's Address No thinking person will doubt that continuous education, through the formative years and into adult life, is necessary if the average citizen is to have his fighting chance at maintaining economic and civil rights. The modern, technical inventions of science require that people get together to form closely knit associationsg that they learn to work in cooperation for their self-protection, for the preservation of their human rights, their freedom and the American way of life! But education has a more profound purpose and broader significance. Education, according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, involves much more than simple instruction. Christian education should be fundamentally concerned with drawing out the good in man and developing it to is highest endp it should be concerned with disciplining the soul. In contrast to these Christian tenets of education we are confronted with those of a modern world based, as they are, upon urgency and expediency rather than upon justice and goodness. Nor can we doubt the truthfulness of the foregoing statement. For, modern education has become synonomous with getting ahead in this world - this progressive world - at any price. Modern, non-Christian edu- cation completely ignores the sad fact that evil keeps apace or immediately follows as a consequence of its teachings and practices. Modern education - based on expediency - has already oversupplied us with well-informed barbarians and very clever fools who bow down in superstitious awe before their self-made gods-science, machinery and money. ln conclusion, l wish to repeat, that this world does need education but a Christian education which fosters the good in man rather than one which bows down to his base desires. Only a Christian education, based upon justice, truth and goodness, can lead the student to a clear understanding ot the true values of success, ideals and, most important of all, man's destiny. Under any other course of action, human life makes no sense and forces man out of harmony with himself, into discord with his fellowmen, the nation, and, this above all, forces a breach between himself and his Creator! Modern education, based on other than Christian fundamentals, has certainly given proof of the chaos it can produce! Christian education, on the other hand, will imbue men with the spirit of Christ, a spirit, which the rushing waters of doubts and difficulties in a modern world, will not subdue! Fr. lustin, O.F.M. Conv.
