Since the child is endowed with physical, intellectual and moral capacities, all these must be developed harmoniously. An education which quickens the intel ligence and enriches the mind with knowledge, but fails to develop the will and direct it to the practice of virtue, may produce scholars, but it cannot produce good men. An education that unites intellectual, moral and religious elements is the best training for citizenship. lt inculcates a sense of respons ibility, a respect for authority and a consideratness for the rights of others which are the necessary foundation of civic virtue - more necessary where as in a democracy, the citizen, enjoying a larger freedom, has a greater obligation to govern himself. The three elements comprising o' sound and beneficial education - intel lectual, moral and religious - have been conscientiously fostered by the Catholic Clergy and Laymen of the Diocese of Buffalo, which observes its centennial anniversary of existence. Throughout these one hundred years numerous institutions have been erected for the scientific and religious training of the Catholic Youth. Throughout the years, these lnstitutions of Learning have afforded its students a moral and religious education, teaching them how to become good citizens, good Members of the Society. Saint Francis High School, one of the many Catholic High Schools in the Diocese of Buffalo and under the able tutelage of the Franciscan Fathers, in pursuing the principles of education, teaches respect for authority, a sense of responsibility and a consideratness for the rights of others. As Graduates of the Class of '47, you have received an education, which consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do in order to obtain the sublime end for which he was created. Be loyal to this essential quality of education! Be faithful Members of the Catholic Church and loyal citizens of the United States! May the Lord bless thee and keep thee. May He show His face to thee and have mercy on thee. May He turn His countenance to thee and give thee peace! FR. LAWRENCE M. CYMAN, O. F. M. Conv. Minister-Provincial
