THE ALVERNIAN Published by... St. Francis High School Flintridge, - California DEDICA TION In this Year of Our Lady, in filial love and devotion, and from hearts brimful of gratitude for an abundance of graces and Blessings, we lay at the feet of our Blessed Mother, Mary, this humble record of one year in our Franciscan lives. We make this offering in the knowledge that She is the Mediatrix of all graces, and in hope that She will make intercessions for us with Her Divine Son, unto the end that like Him we, too, may grow not only in age but also—and more so—in wisdom and in grace before Almighty God. To Mary, therefore, Mother of God and Mother of men; to Mary, Queen of Heaven and earth; and to Mary, Queen of the Franciscan Order, do we humbly proffer and prayerfully dedicate this nineteen fifty-four ALVERNIAN. 2 HIS EMINENCE 4 James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, D.D. Archbishop of Los Angeles HIS EXCELLENCY Most Reverend Joseph T. McGucken, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General of Los Angeles HIS EXCELLENCY Most Reverend Timothy Manning, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop and Chancellor of Los Angeles 5 Ft. Emilian, O. F. M.f Cap. Fr. Emilian, during his two years as Rector, has made great contributions to the welfare of St. Francis. Recently, through his efforts, St. Francis was accredited to the University of California. In addition to his many duties, he has always found time to advise and to encourage his students. We of the Alvernian staff, together with the Student Body, wish to express our gratitude for his guidance and support in all our activities. We prayerfully wish him every grace and blessing in the year ahead. Fr. Cyril, O. F. M., Cap- Fr. Cyril teaches Latin I, Plane Geometry, Algebra II, Religion IV, Trigonometry, and Solid Geom- etry. He is also the Senior homeroom teacher and Director of the Third Order. Fr. Cyril is well known for his genial personality and witty replies. He follows the saying: Speak softly, but carry a big stick. Fr. Alphonsus, O. F. M., Cap- Fr. Alphonsus, in addition to his duties as head of the English department, is also Advisor for the Alvernian and for the School paper, the Knight Breeze . F. Mm, Cap. Fr. Paul, in addition to teaching Spanish and Sophomore Religion, is also Librarian. Father is well known about the campus for his wide knowledge and his quiet nature; but we know that behind his quiet nature there is a great deal of that Irish sense of humor. The Alvernian staff wishes to congratulate Father Paul for his recent publication, “The Theology of the Spiritual Life, a book which he translated from Latin into English. ft OF- f .Cf- Fr. Rupert, O. F. M., Cap. Father Rupert teaches History I and II, Religion III, and Latin III and IV. Recently, Father under- took the task of instructor for the newly organ- ized golf team. M., Cap- Father Lawrence teaches Physics, Chemistry, Latin II, Algebra I, and Business Math. Father is our athletic moderator and has made great advancements in the athletic program. For the three years previous to his enlistment, Wayne always participated in St. Francis activities. He played varsity football and held positions on both Alvernian and Knight Breeze staffs. In his Junior year he was in charge of the Junior-Sen- ior Prom, which was a great success. His pres- ence at St. Francis has been greatly missed. 22 HALL OF FAME HONOR STUDENT Once in a while there passes through a high school a student that may be described simply as “Brilliant' . It is our School's good fortune to have such a student in this year's graduating class. When he first came to us four years ago, it was not difficult to detect that here among us was a boy that had every- thing that goes to mgke a scholar. He was possessed of a keen mind and an aptitude for study that has not been surpassed in the short academic history of Saint Francis. His scholastic record is an exceptional one. He is a straight A student all through his four years in high school. This record, impressive in its own right, he capped by winning a Cup for Science and Mathematics in the Bank of America Achievement Awards Contest, and, as a result, is eligible for a Scholarship. In addition, he was top student in the school in the California Scholarship Federation requirements, and his fellow CSF members in the Saint Francis Chapter voted him the honor of being that Chapter's first President. It may be a trite saying to describe a per- son a both a gentleman and a scholar but this particular student is the essence of both. This year's A1.VERNIAN is both honored and proud to salute the HONOR STUDENT of the 1954 Graduating Class, WALTER A. SCHAAL. SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR There are no Four Horsemen , and there are no Seven Blocks of Granite at Saint Francis, so we make no claim to athletic fame on the basis of immor- tality. Rather, do we point with pride to young' men who consistently play the game well and who are motivated by the highest and keenest sense of sports- manship. A look back through the Year Books of the past few years will tell the story that it is such men we honor each year. This year is no exception. We are honoring an athlete this year that can best be described as a steady player . This epithet connotes not brilliance, but application; not temperament, but con- sistency. And it was not just one phase of Athletics, but all phases,- not just one game, but all games. He is only a two year player, but in that short time he stacked up an enviable record. In the 1952-1953 Season, he played Football, Basketball, and Base- ball, being voted by the School's Ath- letic Director and Coaches as the School's most valuable player in Baseball. In the 1953-1954 Season, he played Football and Basketball. To help his school in the latter, he gave up his job. That was a sacrifice, but it was rewarded when he received Honorable Mention in the All- Conference Grid Team. His teammates accorded him the honor of being the Team Captain. We think that it is a fitting close to his athletic career at Saint Francis that the Athletic Director and his Coaches should choose him as the Sportsman of the Year. And it is as such that the 1954 ALVERIAN salutes the steady and con- sistent player of the year—PAT DOWNS. But ag never as virile or as dynamic as yj (Continued on Page 8) Cage, Ryan, Williams, Stansbury The Sodality of Our Lady is a religious body which aims at fostering in its mem- bers an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary. By re-dedicating themselves to the ideals of self-sanctification, the sanctification of their neighbor, and the defense of the Church against attacks of the wicked, our Sodalists are honoring Mary during the Marian year in the way most pleasing to her. The Third Order of St. Francis has for its purpose the fostering of the Franciscan Spirit among our students. It is a real Order because its mode of life is modeled on the life led by Franciscan Priests and Brothers. The members wear a religious habit' , the scapular and cord; they recite a divine office daily, the twelve Paters, Aves, Glorias; they live a community life by the monthly reception of Confession and communion and by attending the regular meeting. In the past seven centuries of its history, men and women of all walks of life have proudly worn the brown scapular and the white cord of St. Francis. We urge you to make the Franciscan spirit your own, and then we may call you OUR BROTHERS IN ST. FRANCIS. Since the 1954 Alvernian is dedicated to Mary, Queen of the Franciscan Order, we frequently hope that She will drop the seed of a Capuchin Vocation into the hearts of many of our boys. Vocation requirements are really few: good physical health, average school work, and a desire to serve God. Perhaps Mary Immaculate is offer- ing you a Vocation as you read this page; her invitation would run like this: I wish you to become one of my Capuchin Sons, a follower of the seraphic Francis of Assisi . We hope your answer will be YES . RETREAT Our retreat, conducted by Fr. Hugh, O.F.M., Su- perior of Serra Retreat, Malibu, was held on March 3rd, and 4th. The purpose of a retreat is to deepen our spiritual life, to bring us closer to God, to increase sanctifying grace in our souls. May this page in the annual be a constant re- minder of the good resolutions we made during the Retreat of the Marian Year of 1954. Mill Under the giant oaks by the swimming pool—and a beautiful summer afternoon—that was the setting for our first out-door graduation on Saturday, June 13, 1953. With Auxiliary Bishop Joseph T. McGucken presiding, thirty Seniors ascended the steps to the speakers’ platform to receive their diplomas from His Excellency. It took less than an hour for the 1953 commence- ment exercise, and when it was over Saint Francis had bidden farewell to its Fourth Graduat- ing Class. AU SEATS RESERVED TOP: School. Ryan won this coveted berth by the powerful run- ning and vicious blocking that he dis- played throughout the campaign. His defensive work, together with his offen- sive power, labeled him a menace to all rival teams. „ PAT DOWNS In addition to receiving Honorable Men- tion from the Catholic Conference, Pat Downs was selected as the Most Valu- able Player on the St. Francis team. He gained these honors by his excellent blocking, his brilliant pass-catching, and his fiery will to win. Downs was always considered an important part of Coach Friedman's football machine. All-Conference Second Team— Jim Rockenbach Honorable Mention— Don Cooper St. Bernardine 13-0 In the opening game of the 1953 football season, the Knights cracked three periods of tight scoreless play, and rolled by St. Ber- nardine 13-0. Pat Ryan scored both touch- downs for the Knights. Bellarmine 0-19 A visiting Bellarmine-Jefferson team, led by Quarterback Tom Doyle, trimmed the Knights 19-0. Outstanding performances in blocking and tackling were turned in by St. Francis linemen Rohan, Mack, and Eisele.
