Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1952 volume:

vermem ranas Shortly before the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, St. Francis went to Mt. Alvernia, the high mountain retreat, awe inspiring in its remoteness from the meeting places of the world, where he received the Sacred Stigmata of the wounds of Christ Crucified. Jfail Jnan 3£ail«,Mary, full of grace, he Jdorc) is with thee: blessed art thou amoncjsl women, and blessed is the fruit of tky womb, esus. Auxiliary Bishop and Chancellor of Los Angeles rVery Rev. £-7r. Stephen, Gap St. Francis Seminary and High School would doubtless still be a dream were it not for the vision and zeal of him who is the spiritual leader of the Capuchin Franciscan Fathers on the West Coast, the Very Reverend Father Stephen Murtagh, O.F.M., Cap. It is in recognition of his efforts to further the Capuchin Apostolate that we dedicate this year's Alvernian to him, asking him to accept it as a sincere gesture of our gratitude and appreciation. Rev. £7r. Valerian, Gap. Fr. Valerian, in addition to his many duties as Rector of St. Francis High School, has always found time to talk with his students, and to support and encourage them in all of their activities. We of the annual staff, the Senior class, and the rest of the Student Body wish to thank him for his unfa wish him the best of everything in the years to come. wT' KNIGHTS OF MARY Devotion to Mary Immaculate characterizes Fran- ciscan education. The center of all of our school activities should be the Sodality of OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS. This year the Sodality recep- tions were held on Nov. 21st. Consecration to Mary, said Rev. T. G. Hayes, guest-speaker at the ceremony, is the very essence of the Sodal- ity. The projects for the year 51 -52 were to pro- cure books on Our Lady for the Library, and to assist the Capuchin foreign mission in N. Rho- desia, Africa. The most important accomplish- ment however was the individual observance of the Sodality Pledge. THE GREATEST CALLING To make a sacrifice or an act of self-denial is never easy, even for the best of us. Yet it may, and does become a real joy when done for God's glory, and by the aid of His grace. To leave home and live in a seminary is a truly great and generous sacrifice. But God is never outdone in generosity. In His own secret and mysterious way. He rewards the seminarians with joys of a more lasting and genuine nature. FR. ALPHONSUS, O.F.M., CAP. Fr. Alphonsus is the head of the English department, teaches History II, and has the job of advisor for the Knight Breeze. His participation in student activities is always wholehearted. FR. CYRIL, O.F.M., CAP. Fr. Cyril teaches Algebra I and II, Religion III and IV, Solid Geometry and Trigonometry. He is Senior Home Room teacher, and head of the Sodality. Fr. Cyril is well liked for his witty replies. [ F . ' FR. EMILIAN, O.F.M., CAP. Fr. Emilian teaches Civics, Business Law, Plane Geometry, U. S. History, and Religion I and II. He is also athletic moderator, and will always be remembered for his loyal support at all of our games. FR. PAUL, O.F.M., CAP. Fr. Paul, in addition to teaching Spanish, is also Librar- ian. We suspect that behind his quiet nature, there is a good deal of that Irish sense of humor. fr. FR. EVANGELIST, O.F.M., CAP. Fr. Evangelist teaches History I, Latin III, and Latin IV. He no longer lives here at St. Francis, but lives at the Pro- vincial's parish, St. Francis of Assisi in Los Angeles. We would like to thank him for his extra efforts to get here for his classes, and say that they are appreciated by all of his students. RAYMOND C. McCORMACK Professor McCormack teaches Physics, Chemistry, and Business Math. He is well liked by the students for his readiness for a joke, and for his ability to help out in almost any subject. JR jass You are all familiar with the school crest as it appears on the Senior class ring and on the cover of this book, but how many of you know what it means? If you examine it closely, you will $ee that it depicts a cross surrounded by rays of light, and in the foreground, two arms outstretched and crossed, one over the other. One of the arms is bare, while the other is clothed in the Franciscan brown, and the palm of each hand is pierced. Underneath the whole design is a scroll with the Franciscan motto: “Deus Meus et Omnia,” which means: “My God and My All! If we are to understand the significance of the two arms, we must recall that St. Francis received the marks of the Passion, the Stigmata, and that he car- ried them for the last two years of his life. His hands, feet, and side were pierced like those of his Divine Master in token of his likeness to Him. And so the bare arm in the school crest is the arm of Christ, and the one clothed in brown is the arm of St. Francis. The cross in the background has no figure on it because Our Lord, Who actually hung on it, and St. Francis, who was wounded with the marks of the Crucifixion, are both represented by the arms outstretched in front of the cross. The motto: “My God and My All! was a favorite prayer of St. Frarxcis, and he often used to spend the whole night repeating it over and over again. The school crest and motto, which are in reality the Franciscan coat-of-arms, point out to us the way we should live—imitating Christ, Our Lord, and desiring nothing but God and whatever leads us to Him. HONOR STUDENT We hove never known him to be other than an exceptional student, possessed of a keen insight into knowledge and o deep interest into learning. He was that type of student too, that he was never without a smile and never without a joke, as though the learning experience was fun to him. In him, we would say knowledge and humor, learning and courtesy, studies and respect met and blended, to produce a gentleman who was every inch a scholar, ond a scholar who was every inch a gentleman — our Honor Student of 1952, Laurence Rolle. SPORTSMAN The nice things about him are as numerous os the freckles on his smiling face. We will always re- member him as eager, anxious, affable, courteous and respectful. We will remember him too as one who seemed to make a habit of being brilliant at sports. What he did on the gridiron and the hard- wood looked to us like something that just came natural to him. His case and prowess were things to be envied, emulated. It was for all these things, and many more besides, that his coaches praised him, his colleagues idolized him, and his teachers admired him — and it is for all of these things that we add our measure of praise, and salute our Sportsman of the Year, Bob Kelly. J. Francis A. McIntyre, D.D., who, in that always gracious way of his, presided at the graduation. His presence added that extra touch of nostalgia that makes the graduation of 1951 an unforgettable occasion. 'S Tors The “Golden Knights” of St. Francis acquired a new coach for the '51 campaign in the person of likeable John Pacheco, who not only taught his team how to play rock and sock football, but most important of all, Sports- manship, on and off the playing field. St. Francis compiled a 4-4 record during the season with impressive wins over “Mary, Star of the Sea,” Notre Dame,” Mission,” and Cantwell. Lovejoy and Pullara tallied for the Knights. PULLARA SKIRTS END BEHIND BLOCKING OF FLAATEN AND RYAN ST. JOSEPH 6-13 St. Joseph s, grid champs of the C. C. for the second straight year, valiantly stood off a second half surge by the Flintridge eleven to grab a hard earned 13-6 victory in the league opener. PULLARA MET BY ONCHARGING POMONA LINEMEN MISSION 32-6 The St. Francis grid machine shifted into high gear against the Mission Pioneers by routing them to the tune of 32-6 in registering their only Confer- ence win with Pullara and Lovejoy spearheading the attack. High- lighting the afternoon was the vicious lineplay of Cox, Harper, and Parkinson. FLAATEN EYES LOVEJOY WITH AERIAL IN BJ ENCOUNTER NOTRE DAME 14-13 The educated toe of Dave Lovejoy brought home victory to the gold-clad Knights of St. Francis as his two perfect placement kicks broke the hearts of all loyal Irish supporters as the Knights triumphed 14-13. FERRY EYES PAYDIRT AS PULLARA PAVES THE WAY MATER DEI 0-12 St. Francis Hi met an inspired Mater Dei eleven, and this, coupled with injuires, spelled defeat for Coach John Pacheco s warriors. Mater Dei capitalized on two costly fumbles to register a 12-0 win. RYAN AND FERRY FORM INTERFERENCE FOR FAST STEPPING PULLARA RON COX Yes! Cox has done it again. Ron Cox, for the second con- secutive year, has been selected for one of the coveted guard berths on the Second All-Conference Football Team. Cox won this nod by his vicious tackling and his bone-bruising blocking that he displayed throughout the CC campaign. The Altadena Alp was an important cog in Coach Pacheco's well-oiled forward wall machine. OfLL - Conference Stars (Football) HONORABLE MENTION: Bob Kelly, John Cobb, and Dick Gibson. RAY PULLARA The Eagle Rock Express, Ray Pullara, was honored for the first time this year by the Conference Officials in grabbing a backfield slot on the mythical All-Conference Eleven. Ray, with his deceptive ball carrying and pin point passing, won acclaim from both rival opponents and coaches. His defensive work, coupled with his of- fensive push, labeled Pullara as one of the finest all- around backs in the Conference. Besides captaining his teammates to second place in the Conference standings, he also led the team in scoring with his delayed drive-ins and his unorthodox jump-shot which scored constantly. Coupled with his fine shooting, his cool, dependable floor play was the main factor in his success. Ofll - Conference (Basketball) HONORABLE MENTION: Mike Flaaten, and Fred Rogers. DICK GIBSON Dick Gibson had the distinguished honor of being tabbed this year for a spot on the 1952 All-Conference Cage Team, even though he was only a Sophomore. Gibson easily possessed the best hook shot in the Conference, and while he wasn't as tall as his opposing centers, he more than made up for his lack of stature by his accurate shooting and rigid rebounding. Gibson was also a sound feeder from his pivot position. • L TOP ROW: L to R: Coach Chuck Pacheco; Manager Larry LeMone; Dennis Horan; Jim Doherty; Bill Carleton; David Williams; Les Lewis; Rodney DeClerk; Paul Bontempo; Fr.
