The yearbook recounts the hours of this year at St. Francis de Sales-the only Catholic high school in Newark. It presents typical Ameri- can boys and girls praying, studying, and playing. XVe have featured the seniors in our tale of time but have given much space, also. to the nnde1'classmen. Praying . . . A good day begins for the De Salesite at seven o'clock. Ile attends the eight o'clock Nlass and endeavors to grow in grace. thus developing to the full his spiritual powers. Studying . . . The student attends classes with the aim oi developing his mental powers until he can apply principles to individual cases-in short, he hopes to learn to think. Playing . . . Opportunities are provided for acquiring social grace and for developing physically per- fect bodies. Poise becomes habitual with the practice of correct social customs. NVe learn to play with grace and fairness. 0 In t.i:.i:1si1w.r. 0 livin LIFE BEGI S AT ST. Boniface, our beloved Principal! A strict disciplin- arian, a teacher, a dramatic coach, a religious-our friend, Sister is all of these and so much more that We wish we had the power to voice those half-formed, beautiful impressions that crowd against the gates of speech. Three years ago, while We were still underclassmen, Sister M. Boniface came to St. Francis de Sales. VVe are very grateful for the privilege that has been ours. Activities have been fos- tered by Sister until our school is the center of our lives. We have a dramatic club, a newspaperg we have assemblies, a bi-weekly radio boradcastg we have a glee club, parties and dances-making the hours spent at school a real preparation for life. Sister M. Boniface is interested in current affairs and in athletic contests, but best of all, she is concerned about each of the forty-two of us. She shares our failures and triumphs, she is a faultless guide on the path of righteousness, she has created an esprit de corps that is enviable, we play, study, and pray-to- gether. Sister has worked unceasingly for the interests of all those under her care. She promoted the trip to WVashington until it became a reality. NVe can never thank her adequately for all that she has done for us, but we can, with Godis grace, lead lives that are true to the ideals instilled in us by her. To our leader, our guide, our inspiration-we dedicate this nineteen hundred fifty edition of NIr:Mo1Rs. AT THE HALF Although the two Sophomore Classes are divided, they are one in spirit through the efforts of Sister M. Kenneth and Sister M. Gratia, the class officers, and the splendid cooperation of the class it- self. We have given several dances, one of the most successful being the Twirp Dance, which featured something new in school activities. Joanne Strigle brought glory to us by winning, in World History, first place in the district in the Scholarship Tests. We have de- bated and studied and played through the year always keeping the ideals of St. Francis in our hearts. Charles Friel FIRST QUARTER VVhen the freshmen entered school last fall they were slightly green and more than a little afraid of the new routine of high school life. Now the end of the year has rolled around and the freshies can look with pride on a very suc- cessful year. Sister Mariella, our homeroom teacher, worked long and hard to make every freshman undertaking a success. The radio program and the Christmas party showed the class spirit. The school can look for great things to come from the freshman class. They work together as a class for the class. Ever since last fall. when the entire senior class went out and solicited advertisements and patrons, we have tried to make a publica- tion that is worthy of the school. XVe have chronicled the serious and happy moments of our last year at St. Francis. XVe have tried to imprison the spirit and ideals of our school in the-s pages. XVe have presented the student body praying. working, and playing. Every member of the Memoirs staff shares the responsibility of the book you now have in your hands. There ar some. however. who Time-Nlary Anne Follmer. -lim and Xlary Catherine of Time deserve special mention. Sister Marie Berna- dette has worked unstintingly advising and planning. giving us out of her experience the help we needed. Editor Bob McManus has spent many hours writing, cutting, pasting. and confering He knew his staff and made assignments that brought the best possible re- sults. Natalie Riceiardo amassed most of the money during the drive for funds and has shown an unflagging zeal since. She knows how to spend wisely. The Clee Club this year has been showered with compliments. so it is only fitting that we give credit to our director par-excellence, Sis- ter M. Helene. The directorship of a hundred lively students was a feat of almost impossible accomplishment in itself. In converting this group into an harmonious four-part chorus. Sister showed not only the best in ability but a love of music that was contagious. Of the highlights of the year's Clee Club program, the concert of Christmas carols per- haps shone the brightest. This was given over our local station, VVCLT on December 21. The brilliance of this beautiful yuletiue offer- ing was enhanced by the truly spiritual inter- pretation of the First Christmas Mornf, To spread the Irish feeling over Licking County. the Clee Club accepted an invitation to give a half-hour program over the Hi- Timeh spot on YVCLT regularly used by Newarlcs public high school. The versatility of the group was displayed by the selections which ranged from the peppy XVearing of the Creenw to the soulful Macushla.'i This last number, sung by our soloist Barbara Blar- tin. is a memory that will remain forever. The singing on Easter at St. Francis de Sales Church was the last contribution of the chor- isters as an entire group. Members other than senior will honor the graduates on Commence- ment Day. There are no happier memories of S. F. de S. than those caught in song by the Clee Club. The year 1949-50 saw a new project inaugu- rated at St. Francis High. Every other week on Wednesday at 1:80 our school had its own quarter-hour broadcast over WCLT. Every class and club gave a program of its choice, thereby affording a great variety of plays such as: musical, historical, and dramatical. The participants in the radio skits agree that it takes a great amount of practice and time to prepare for such a program, but the excite- ment and enjoyment of actually giving it on the air is reward enough. Some of the work which precedes a finished program is writing script, selecting the cast, rehearsing until the program runs smoothly, timing and cutting. and devising sound effects. Radio plays an important part in America today. There are a great many departments for which one can prepare as, advertising, sell- ing, music librarian, sports announcing, en- gineering, disc-jockey, etc. WVe were spell- bound when Parnell Egan explained all of these to us during Vocation NVeek. It is the desire of the faculty to give the students an actual taste of this type of work. Who knows? Maybe one of our own students will someday become a great radio star! 1 1 il lwfty Iwte ,fl S prm g Dme PIOIHS 11111 come .1 d ll go Ill 0111 hxes bu the 49 P10111 wlll remam fole g d6l1Cl0llS food md heax enly musxc fulmshed the lTl0t1f fOl thc hap pl6St of mghts We had saved Olll money md pud our class dues NVe seemed the Countly Club and set to W0lk to 111114 Olll malor 1u111or undertak mg a success WV1lte1 Ehxet genelal chalrman W as ass1sted bv Amta t Dmk IXlllJlL L1lLS Bubara Nlartm A u may be' Is Prom Time E111 et 011 dLc01 0 mer dc slgned pletty program B s ob NICNIJIIUS and Barbal 1 Nldl tm went completely feffllllllle and seemed 111 All C111 Orchestra Evely IUCIH bel of the LOIT1lI1ltt66 dld h1S best to make the evemng 0116 to be lemembeled Even now a year later there IS a sweetness 111 tl1e thought that IS compellmg as we fold iway the souvemr of our Prom Fzfty Sax , X in l ' 7 l .1 A ll l I l 1 1 1 ,t1, 3' ', 2 ' ' A ' ' , . . . Sixty Two The Green Wave Basketeers did not exact- ly set the world on fire this year but they were constantly in the thick of the battle. Through- out the season the Wave exhibited sportsman- ship and a great deal of basketball ability. The seasonis record of 12 victories and 11 de- feats does not tell the story of this teamis work. Under the capable tutelage of head coach Iames Brickels, the Green Waves finished the regular season with 10 on the right and 10 on the left to balance the ledger at 500 points. In the Class B District Tournament at Wes- terville our team defeated Hebron and a favored Mifflin team only to lose out to a strong XVorthington team in the quarter-finals. This team will be long remembered by its loyal fans for its ability to fight back in the face to defeat and to take a loss with determ- ination to win the next game. The junior High cag- ers lacked height to enable them to com- pete in a fast city junior High league. The seemingly poor record of eleven defeats and only one win does not tell a true story of the ability of the players on that team. WVe do not offer excuses for past performances but look with opti- mism to the future, when these same boys will not have to play under the many handicaps to which they have been ac- customed. Kenny Campbell, the juniors coach gave generously of his time. He tried to prepare the boys for Varsity ball. He stressed sportsmanship, and set the ex- ample hy accepting the team's losses with the same grace that he took the victories. ther lllllll hom 1111 l Mikz' Grady scmes xuth Q1 1lllglC.
