Every Fransalian is offered a between a General Scientific Classl Commercial course. Each student is which fall within the realm of human ' l e n aged to choose the course which w' prepare him for his life work. Witl' s 4 i implements of learning at our dispo are given the opportunity to develop train our intellectual powers. Through development and training, we are re by the learned Bishop of Geneva to m we can from the knowledge we recei' follow his counsel is to prepare oursel that life which becomes a member Mystical Body of Christ. 4 I 'HP Our Religion classes are designed to bring us to a fuller understand- ing of our Faith. The books which we use, Love, Loyalty, Service, and Guidance, round out our knowl- edge of God and of the best ways to know, love, and serve Him in this world in order to be happy with Him in the next. Regular confession time is made available to Fransaluans Here Judy Cunningham Kathy Lucerne, Pat Lowe, Ruth Lathrop and Mary Esther Hernandez take advantage of this spiritual opportunity. These budding physicists, Pat Fitzgerald, Rosemary Buckley, Will it balance? queries John Kingston as General Sci Gus Drews, and Larry VanRyan, are finding out how hot it ence students attentively watch his experiment can get before everything blows up. Science classes at St. Francis are co-ordinated to bring to each Fran- salian a greater appreciation of X. the universe created by God. We have the opportunity to learn about this world through General Science, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry courses. I I The important thing is don't add too much Sister Rose Daniel tells her 9 o'clock Chem istry class. What do you suppose is crawling around under those fascinated gazes in Biology? Gerri Grabow, Jeanette Dunst, Michael DeGrace, Tom Carlson, Agnes Jones, Bruce Schilken, John Boes, and Sally Watson are intrigued by what they observe under the student microscopes. mb- S ,N 1 A Jim Pacheco and Mary McGill show Sister Thomas Mar- guerite's English IV class how to diagram adiectival clauses. The ability to express ourselves properly is important in the world of today if tomorrow's world is to be at peace with God and with our fellowmen. English and French are languages which are known almost universally. Latin, the language of Christ's Church and the basis for so many other languages, brings to us a better understanding of ancient Roman culture and civilization. Ns Demonstrating the correct way to read the passage to the second-year French students is Miguel Leman who speaks the language fluently. 54 5: is W 5 1 s A E3 ., 2? 2? 5 ! In World History and in American History we learn of the events of the past which have shaped the events of the present. Today's modern world in all its social aspects is studied in Sociology. World Geography brings familiarity with distant lands, draw- ing us closer to all our brothers in Christ. M--. -1. E O . You are there-Mary Hein helps fight the battle of the minds in American History. 51 Just how do you work this thing? Mike Stuart asks Sherrie Beals in Sister Mary Martin's Solid Geometry class. To help make logical reasoning a part of our every problem in life is the purpose of our six mathematics courses. From Algebra I to Trigo- nometry, we learn the importance of step-by-step analysis. Frank Hauser, Pat Keegan, Marietta Angerer, Diane Roeclel, and Bonne McNeive are waiting for an answer to their question. 54 Fransalians learn to express them- selves with a real knowledge of their topic and of its importance. Mrs. Lenabell Sloan Martin's train- ing gives them a basis for future contact with other people. The Drama class acquires the ability to work well with others and finds the necessity of cooperation a virtue. Karen Sue Smith's topic must be interesting, for everybody seems enthralled, including the timekeeper. 3 4 . , E ,Z E 5'9 501 Father Robert Kekeisen gives the Fransalian staff pointers on journalism from his practical experience as associate editor forthe Denver Catholic Register. We have learned that a good Christian iournalist serves divine Truth in every field of journalistic writing. The ability to express him- self clearly, concisely, and com- pletely is the aim of every iour- nalist. Fransalian reporters strive daily to increase that ability and to bring to S.F. a better newspaper and yearbook. Reference books, novels, pamphlets, biographies, and current magazines are available to Fransalians for study and relaxation. Sister Mary Paul, librarian, lends valuable as- sistance in the proper and profit- able use of library facilities. Sister Mary Paul, librarian, checks a book out for Linda Dickson while other S.F. students make use of the library facilities for research and leisure reading. i Y ' h Q-. Success means state of grace in the eyes of God, explained Father Ralph Schenk, S..l., during the senior retreat held at the Broad- moor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Father also stated that retreat was a time of building character through virtue. ln stressing the need for re- ligion, self-discipline, and high morals, Father cited many experi- ences from his service as army chaplain. The retreat schedule con- sisted of Holy Mass, conferences, the rosary, meditation, Stations of the Cross, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and confession. My Lord and my God is the prayer uppermost in the minds and hearts of every girl during Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. X Ns Broadmoor Retreat X , . fsltittiil WW, 1.7 Conferences came in for a fair share of the mealtime discussions. Whatever the girls are discussing appeals to Father Frank Morteld's sense of humor. 1 The only things which are impor- tant are the things which are eter- nal. You can be eternally happy or eternally unhappy. You make the choice yourself. Thus Father Matthew .l. Kerschen, C.SS.R., stated the reason for making a good re- treat. Father Kerschen conducted this year's retreat for S.F. freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. ln what he described as the most important conference, Father said, Without prayer no adult can be saved. lt is impossible for any human being without the grace of God to meet and conquer every temptation. But if we do pray, we surely shall be saved. One of the principal points Father brought out in many of his talks was that the standards of the world are different from the stand- ards of God. The schedules for both the freshman and the sopho- more-iunior retreats were similar to that of the senior retreat. An opportunity to re-examine their spiritual lives was given to the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors by Father Mat- thew Kerschen, C.SS.R. But the meritorious Gremlin squad did tuck in one accomplishment outside of capturing the headlines. A long drought of Homecoming defeats was terminated this year. Next year's team will be minus 10 big men, seniors who formed the co-ordinated squad that long will be remembered. Captain Mike Nacha- zel will leave with his solid body that scored nine touchdowns and so often ripped the opposition with long gains. Joe Ryan, the pilot of the pack, who accounted directly for 'I4 of the 28 Gremlin TD's, and Norm Silva, the fleetfooted little spiriter who scored l0 times and kicked l5 extra points, will take with them that ever-faithful Ryan- to-Silva pass combination. Jim Pacheco will take his key blocks, and Howie Braham, his hustling Down Polichio goes as Silva tightens the clamp, but this didn't hinder the Mullen surge as they crippled the Grems 27-O in the sole Grem- lin defeat. The league champion Mustangs re- fused to allow the Gremlins to warm up, pounding a continual onslaught against the form. Bob Connelly will withdraw his huge, plunging figure from the ranks. Gary Hart will leave with his important task of defending nnd offending, which he performed so well. Dennis Stebenne will crop his tremendous arm from the squad. George Hein and Bill O'Connell will gather up their distinctive duties of plunging and blocking, and with the rest, file out reluctantly. Confi- dently they can leave knowing their places will be adequately filled by such men as George Claypool, Tim Weiand, .loe Fenton, Don Brown and Sherman Alsop. I ' . a . ,, Q.. STATE TOURNAMENT St. Francis Opp. Canon City 57 40 Mt. Carmel 51 46 St. Joseph 40 39 At long last the cheer of a championship has burst forth from the enthusiastic fans of the St. Francis Gremlins. This year's basketball squad emerged from the hardest-fought contest of the season as the pre-eminent state champions of the Colorado Catholic High School Tournament. lt was an undaunted 40-39 victory over the resolute St. Joseph Bulldogs that placed the Grems in the winner's spotlight and climaxed a most notable season. This tournament victory has established the Grems as the team with the most crowns, a total of six. The renowned Regis Raiders, who fell so unexpectedly before St. Joe in the semi-finals, follow the Grems with five state titles. Since the inception of the tourney in 1939, St. Francis has won in the years 1944, '47, and the three-year streak in '49, '50, and '51, It was a 57-40 trouncing of the Canon City Abbey Bears and a 51-46 decision over the Mt. Carmel Eagles that spurred the Gremlins into the big game. The triumphant Grems dog- gedly beat off the Bulldog assaults in a victory that seemed balanced in the hands of fortune until the final gun. To complete awards, three of Coach Wendy Strohauer's squadsmen, George Claypool, Tom Gamel, and Jim Pacheco, made All-State honors. Wendy Strohauer, the distinguished coach of the state champions, Tom Gamel, captain of the squad, and Father Frank Morfeld, the ever-faithful and spirited S.F. athletic director, extend hands of acceptance for the coveted trophy presented by Father Arthur Verdieck, athletic di- rector of Regis, the defending champion, and Father Ed- ward Madden, president of the Denver Parochial League. 4' er -1 Little Norm Silva displays his tremendous leaping ability as he flies forward for a lay- up against the Bears from the Abbey in the Gremlin's first game of the tourney. St. Francis and the league championship this year. The Gremlin season concluded with 12 sharp victories against two crushing defeats, both dealt by the traditionally powerful ax of the Regis Raiders. Slashing their way through the first round of competition, the Grems picked up six victories including a spotlight upset over the St. Joe Bulldogs. But the glowing confidence the Gremlins carried into the deciding game was shattered as the Raiders registered a convincing 64-45 triumph. The second round of Parochial play was a repetition of the first with the Gremlins habitually felling every foe. With a premonition of defeat and the absence of true confidence, the Grems went into the final important Regis contest. And the game went just that way. Paralysis struck Wendy's men early in the game, and they floundered through the rest of the 56-38 slaughter. Up against the Raiders, the Grems tightened, unable to shine forth as the team that performed so well against the rest of the league and at least potentially shared the trophy. It was hard to adiust themselves to the realization of second place. Tim Weiand leaves the backboards to show his shooting talents as he sends the sphere sailing against the vain efforts of the sixth-place Mullen Mustangs. Fighting Tim boosted the Gremlin cause throughout the season with his ceaseless rebounding. PAROCHIAL LEAGUE St. Francis Opp. Mullen 59 38 Annunciation 86 49 Cathedral 46 40 Mt.
