One of that group was Father Gregory Smith, our pastor and superintendent. For a quarter of a century he has labored in the diocese of Denver as Christ's representative, offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass daily and administering the sacraments to the faithful. In recognition of his outstanding Work as a priest, We, the class of 1947, dedicate this annual to Father Smith on the oc- casion of his silver jubilee with our heartiest congratulations and fervent prayers that he may spend many more years in the service of souls. The word stands for the things for which students of St. Francis' are noted-sportsmanship, scholastic ability, outstanding character and loyalty. The name Fransalian was originated in the senior year of the first graduating class, the class of 1928. Under the direction of the present pastor, Rev. Gregory Smith, who was assistant pastor at that time, the student body was called together for the purpose of selecting a name for the new school paper and year book. After more than 100 names were suggested and discussed, Fransalian was decided upon as the most fitting name, it being derived from the words Francis and Sales Each year a student of the senior class is chosen to represent all Fransalians in activ- ities of the school. The following students have served in this capacity since the first class was graduated in 1928: john Lindhart, '28, Bernold Gerber, '29, Michael Mont- gomery, '30, Robert Walker, '51, Fred McCallin, '32, Miles Gillies, '33, Margaret Fitzpatrick, '34 Qthis was a class of girlsj, Stephen Leberer, '55, john Wilson, '36, William Jeffries, '37, joseph Halloran, '58, joseph Leberer, '59, William Gormon, '40, Benjamin Hannigan, '41, Jack Aylward, '42, Francis Spindler, '45, jim Hynes, '4-l, Ronald Donovan, '45, Bill Cassidy, '46, Bill Miller, '47. Of this group, two are secular priests, Father Fred McCIallin and Father joseph Leberer, and one is studying for the priesthood, Mr. jack Aylward. The only girl Fran- salian is now a Sister of St. joseph, Sister Mary Martin Fitzpatrick. f 1 f F NN . I-le was called into eternity on Feb. 5, I9-16, in his junior year. He was head coach from 1956 until this past year. During that time he brought a baseball thampionship to St, Francis' in 1959 and a co-cham- pionship in 19112. 'l'he Basketball team won co-championships in 1942 and 1911 and it copped the State Tournament in x19'tfi. Our appreciation cannot he expressed in mere words, for Bert has instilled into St. Francis' teams a spirit that will remain as long as a Gremlin team takes the field or floor, a spirit that is handed on year after year to each succeeding team in any sport. llert li. Kei rns PAGE THIIQTY-FOUR Sam arvis Sam jarvis, who piloted the Mustangs of Mullen high to several parochial cham- pionships in the past two years, is head coach of the Gremlins this year. This year he put his Gremlins in the second place in Football and shared honors with Holy Family for third place in Basketball. In the State Parochial Tourney the Gremlins took the championship. Sam was born in Denver, Feb. 16, 1921. He had his first athletic experience in St. Vincent's home. He made a name for himself as a player on the Mullen high teams while attending that institution. He made the all-Parochial football team in 1938 and 1939, the first honor coming when he was only 1-1 years of age. Sam succeeds Bert E.
