Father James Brown, the first pastor. named the new parish St-. James'. ln the fall of 1892, Father Brown was transferred to Leadville. and Father -I. J. Gibbons came from Ouray to St. Francis de Sales. lle began work about November 10, and at once started the erection of a Church on the corner of Alameda and Lincoln. Mr. Paroth, who built the church, started work on Xo- vember 15, and rushed it so that it could be ready for the l'hristmas ceremonies. The new church was dedicated on the Sunday before Vhristmas. Rt. Rev. N. l'. Matz blessed the Uhurch and named it St. Francis de Sales. ln addition to attending to St. Francis de Sales, Father Gibbons took care of Littleton, Castle Rock, Elizabeth, Elbert and Lark- ff spur. He was often visited by the present pastor of the church, Father J. J. Donnelly. On account of the death of Father Brown, Father Gibbons was sent to take care of the parish in Leadville. in October, 1898. Father NVilliam Morrin. coming from Cripple Vreek, cared for the parish until 1903. He was loved by all. Our be- loved pastor, Father Donnelly, took up the work on April 16. Father Morrin's plan of building a new church was not carried out be- cause the Bishop saw that the parish needed a school. The upper story of the school was to be used for a chapel. The building' was begun in July and the chapel was dedicated on November 1, 1903. The parish school was opened in September, 1906. Little enthusiasm was shown and only thirty pupils attended the first year. The following year, the two Sisters of St. Joseph, who were in charge, had over a hundred children and the teaching staff had to be increased. 'gg Our first assistant pastor, Fa.ther Bernard Fajanelle, came in 1910, but was Th transferred in July of the next year to Rifle to take charge of a parish. He was Q succeeded by Father' Daniel P. Callaghan, who was connected with the parish ii until July, 1915. From October, 1912, to June, 1913, Father J. B. White was 425 3:52 also an assistant pastor. He was succeeded by Father A. J. NVaters, who Q labored a year in the parish. The work on the High School and Community Building was started in the QQ, 3 fall of 1923. The school was completed and ready for classes in September, '35 il 1924. ln that year there was only one high school grade, with thirty-two pupils Q. ' ' in it. Each year after that, another grade was added until there was a com- if jg, plete grade and high school. The new school has grown remarkably. In September, 1928, one hundred and thirty or more pupils registered at St. Fran- Eff, 55 cis de Sales High School.
