The memory of him who guided us through the four happiest years of our life and sacrificed himself that we might reach our goal will always be cherished in the hearts and minds of the Fransalians-'30, To us he symbolizes the learned teacher, the conscientious priest and the under- standing friend. Father James Brown, the first pastor. named the new parish St-. James'. ln the fall of 1892, Father Brown was transferred to Leadville. and Father -I. J. Gibbons came from Ouray to St. Francis de Sales. lle began work about November 10, and at once started the erection of a Church on the corner of Alameda and Lincoln. Mr. Paroth, who built the church, started work on Xo- vember 15, and rushed it so that it could be ready for the l'hristmas ceremonies. The new church was dedicated on the Sunday before Vhristmas. Rt. Rev. N. l'. Matz blessed the Uhurch and named it St. Francis de Sales. ln addition to attending to St. Francis de Sales, Father Gibbons took care of Littleton, Castle Rock, Elizabeth, Elbert and Lark- ff spur. He was often visited by the present pastor of the church, Father J. J. Donnelly. On account of the death of Father Brown, Father Gibbons was sent to take care of the parish in Leadville. in October, 1898. Father NVilliam Morrin. coming from Cripple Vreek, cared for the parish until 1903. He was loved by all. Our be- loved pastor, Father Donnelly, took up the work on April 16. Father Morrin's plan of building a new church was not carried out be- cause the Bishop saw that the parish needed a school. The upper story of the school was to be used for a chapel. The building' was begun in July and the chapel was dedicated on November 1, 1903. The parish school was opened in September, 1906. Little enthusiasm was shown and only thirty pupils attended the first year. The following year, the two Sisters of St. Joseph, who were in charge, had over a hundred children and the teaching staff had to be increased. 'gg Our first assistant pastor, Fa.ther Bernard Fajanelle, came in 1910, but was Th transferred in July of the next year to Rifle to take charge of a parish. He was Q succeeded by Father' Daniel P. Callaghan, who was connected with the parish ii until July, 1915. From October, 1912, to June, 1913, Father J. B. White was 425 3:52 also an assistant pastor. He was succeeded by Father A. J. NVaters, who Q labored a year in the parish. The work on the High School and Community Building was started in the QQ, 3 fall of 1923. The school was completed and ready for classes in September, '35 il 1924. ln that year there was only one high school grade, with thirty-two pupils Q. ' ' in it. Each year after that, another grade was added until there was a com- if jg, plete grade and high school. The new school has grown remarkably. In September, 1928, one hundred and thirty or more pupils registered at St. Fran- Eff, 55 cis de Sales High School. EMBERS of the Graduation Class of '30, you are leaving St. Francis de ASW' Sales School. The majority of you have been with us from the first Q .,A, ,,., Q W years of your school life. Tn so far as a school shapes and develops character, our school and our work must be judged by your Worth. This thought, alone, would make us intensely interested in your future. Add to this the personal love that has been back of our work and will be back of our continued interest in you and you can understand the anxious but hopeful solicitude with which we see you assume new responsibilities. Your school motto, two lines penned for the first issue of your school paper, is: ' Go forth, and let your message bc The beauty of the Deity. And now you go forth with the power to carry that message to your world more efficiently than could any printed page. The beauty of the Deity means the beauty of love, for God is love, it means the beauty of Truth for God is Truth, the beauty of Virtue for God is Virtue. From the beginning we have striven to show you that we were more deeply interested in the character you develop than in the knowledge that you ac- quired. ln season and out of season we have urged you to do earnest work, for without honest Work there can be no growth or development of- character. Idle- ness stagnates, service builds. God is the Master-man and His human child should reHect and image its divine Father. We are brought forth to express in finite being the perfections of Eternal Being. In a finite way the parent expresses the paternal love of God, the true express His truth, the just express His justice, the pure express His purity. Just in the measure that We do express these virtues We are worthy to be called Sons of God. Just in the measure that we express in our life the beauties of the Divine Life we are fulfilling the purpose of our creation and of our redemption. God became man that men might become gods. In our finite, halting and imperfect. way we can and should show forth the beauties of the Deity. No ideal should be too high for you. If the Catholic school based the purpose and the methods of its work on materialistic psychology then we would have trained you to think of yourselves as brothers of the animal. A peda.g'og'y based on materialistic psychology must Page524 y aww 1930 Flllllwllllllll train those whose thought and character it forms to class themselves as animals in nature and in destiny. lf we ha.d thus trained you we could ask of you nothing high or holy. We do not ask morality of the animal, we do not ask gentleness of the tiger. But we have based the purpose and the methods of our education on the concept of an immortal soul, distinct from the reactions of matter. We have trained you to esteem yourselves as children of God and brothers of Christ. We can, therefore, ask of you Christlike virtue. We can ask you to look upward and to struggle upward, to claim and seek your kinship with the Divine. In school we asked you to use and develop to the utmost those talents that God had given you, and now we ask you to live on a high plane of life, on the Christian plane of life. Christianity is a height to which men have climbed slowly and any descent from that height is a form of suicide. You will and must live in the worldg but take into that world your faith, your concept of duty, your habits of prayer, your fidelity to church and for you that world will never be a Godless World. They pass on along the pathway of life to continue their wonderful work of helping their unfortunate fellow-men. Next appears a small but very business-like looking woman. She smiles with the contentment and happiness which comes to those who have gained suc- cess in this world. Anna Marie Koester now owner of a large chain of fashion- able cafeterias. But now my attention is again drawn to the center of the stage. Soft music fills the air. First the light is thrown on the orchestra. There in immaculate evening dress stands Harold McCurdy, the director, who is now even more popular than the great Rudy Vallee. The light is turned to the other side of the stage and from the wings trip four dainty girls, dressed in gorgeous oos- tumes. They dance with beautiful, graceful movements to the soft dreamy music. Lorraine, Virginia, Elaine and Dorothy finish their dance, bow and smile and then disappear to trip their way gracefully and happily through the future. I hear a loud pounding noise and as the curtain rises on the scene of a court room. I see Judge Hartman calling the court to order. Before him stands Officer McCallin and beside him there is a tall, beautiful woman. As she turns and faces the judge I recognize the famous actress Ursula Alvey. She now starts to speak and tries to explain that she was sure she was not going more than thirty miles an hour, and now she would be late for a very important en- gagement to have her portrait painted by the celebrated artist, Janette Yeggy. The judge dismisses the case and Officer McCallin hurries away to see his friend Pat Ross, now a. great baseball player, play in the greatest game of the season. The noise of cheering crowds in the grandstand fades away and the soft haunting strains of an organ fills the air. I see a magnificent church crowded with people. The tall figure of a priest advances towards the altar, mounts the steps and as he turns to begin the man I see his face. It is Thomas, now Rev. Bogard, about to celebrate his first mass. As he begins a beautiful voice is heard from the choir, I turn and see Isabel, her face raised to heaven as she sings the praises of God, while Mary plays the beautiful accompaniment on the organ. As the last notes die away the lights go out one by one leaving darkness, just as each old friend passes from the stage of life and disappeared into the dark- ness of the future. Suddenly I am back by my window and the clock strikes twelve. I hurry to my bed and fall asleep with the memory of their faces before me. How happy they all seem, and God bless them every one. C? is 'fi The Shield comes directly from the great Saint Francis de Sales him- it Q3 self, and was first employed by his family as their coat-of-arms and later O, 1-3 by Saint Francis when he was Bishop of Geneva. 0 f - arg In the original shield, the background was of blue and gold, with a I-Q white crescent and two red stars, which are the cardinal colors. The in- i scription on the original scroll was Non Exidetf' which when translated ' P9 .. - .- . .gg means- It will never disappear. The crescent and stars on our shield are gold and the inscription is The Beauty of the Deity -the school motto Ti' adopted from the first message of Father Donnelly on the issuing of our initial school paper. Say, by the Way, did you know that Catherine Crowley did go to the con- vent, after all? Do you remember how we used to kid her and tell her she would never become a nun? Those were the good old days. I'm afraid Them days are gone forever. Talking about nuns, the other day I saw Frances Eppich. She has a name, very unique, but I can 't spell it for you. It is too long. I always knew that Bill Marvel would find a niche in the Hall of Fame. Last week he was crowned world's champion writer of comedy. He sure knows his laughs. Our old pal, Dave Harrington, deserves some of Marvel's praise, for he is the one who really put Bill 's books on the market by his won- derful bookbinding and printing establishment. You know Dave is at the head of the universally known Harrington and Company, expert printers. Dave sure is getting famous, though, on account of his beloved wife. Yes, she still plays the 'cello, but not in a school orchestra. Isabel is the, or practically is, the best known and also the greatest 'cello player in the United States. Governor Patrick Ross of Texas wrote me a. letter about a month ago. He claims that he and the Secretary of State are getting a.lone fine. By the way, Mary Nieters is quite honored in being the first lady Secretary of State in the United States. Well, Lorraine O'Meara. has been a movie actress for about ten years now. She is at the peak of her career now. She is John Gilbert's leading lady. John is getting pretty old now, but, oh well!-- Befofre I forget it, Elaine Close was baptized in September, 1930, after we left school and the next September she went away to become a nun. I'll tell you. She is in China taking care of little Chinks. Ursula Alvey has become one of the foremost aviatrix of the continent. I imagine she got the idea when she left St. Francis to go to Texas that time. Do you remember! Harold McCurdy began to get tired of being the United States champion shorthand writer, so he started studying medicine. As a result, he is now a very prominent and also skillful surgeon and physician in San Francisco. Our old friend, Tom Bogard, has the real vocation, though. He is chaplain of the leper colony a few miles off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. It is a good thing he learned a little bit of Spa.nish long ago, anyway, is it not? Anna Marie Koester owes her success in life to her mother. She is now at the head of a great number of the best and most exclusive chain restaurants in the United States. Her schooltime pal, Dorothy Hughes, is in the business with her. She is the business manager. I stopped writing a few minutes ago because I heard a familiar name over Page92 :WSW 1930 FBRKSHLIHH the radio. They were just announcing over the greatest broadcasting station in the United States, KOA of Denver, which Ruth Yeggy put at the top of the list, that your cousin, Albert Denny, had just been named Secretary of the Navy by the President. Well, Bill Hartman has at last perfected the submarine deck chair. People used to laugh at such an idea when it was presented tor them in f'Mutt and J eff in the Denver Post. Of course, it would take a member of the class of 1930 to prove to the people that they were the ones to be laughed at. In case you don't know it, Adren Nevans has a liking for farm life. She owns the largest farm in Colorado and she sends more livestock, vegetables, etc., into Denver than all the rest of the farmers in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska put together. Some farmer, eh! what? Did you ever think Virginia would become a nurse? No? Neither did she until one day she heard that a certain fellow by the name of Andrew McCallin was in training to become a male nurse. I don 't know what came over Virginia, but the next day she went to a hospital and applied for admission. She used to like Andy and I guess she still does, but, at any rate, she consented to become Mrs. Andy. I nearly forgot to tell you about Helen Lampert and Janette Yeggy. You remember how hard Janette used to study. Well, she started as a commercial teacher at the University of Boulder. She kept gettingvpromoted right along and now she is the president of the University of Boulder. And, of course, you remember what Helen used to think of studying. Whatever you do, don 't repeat it in public, though. After she got out of school she decided to become better educated. Well, at the end of five years of hard working and studying she obtained a' position as teacher of philosophy in the University of Chicago. I started out to congratulate you, but it seems as though I have written a history of our classmates, but I have to ask you to help me out of a difficulty. I'm looking for a job. Can you feature that? A job! You remember when I landed the position as Henry Ford's private secretary? Well, when he died a year ago today, on November 25, 1949, he left me ha.lf his fortune. And today I find that I have merely a few billion dollars to go and come on. What will I do? Can you help me? 1 certainly need a friend at the present time. What a difference a few years can make! Just think! Back in 1930 we were all happy classmates together and now, twenty years later, we are all over the World, doing twenty-four different things. Funny, isn't it? Give my kindest regards to your wife and children. I remain, as ever, MICHAEL. MONTGOMERY. School starting at noon is more than enough. We get up reluctantly, wash our face, And hurry downstairs where we spy pancakes. Our eyes open wide, and we're cheerful again, But then our thoughts somber as classes begin. First comes Geometry, seldom prepared, N minus two is all that we have heard Since school in September-when spirits But then ln October we'd gladly pass by. were high, Then it is English, the same old routine, Subject-predicate, so simple it seems, But when we become masters of scansion We deserve to retire with a pension. Next, we have a study class Then the notes are quickly passed, But when we have instruction class We are taught of the Church and Mass. Then comes the bell with the noon so sweet, And gives us the rest from many a. feat Of performing our duty and keeping the rules And learning the lessons of the best of all schools. Next, there's a. mad rush for the cafe door, Where we are served till we ask no more, Then after lunch we may dance in the gym, Where the orchestra plays with all its vim. The bell rings too soon for our afternoon work, Altho' it ls hardest not one dares to shlrk. First it is Latin, with all its hard modes, But soon it is over. How? God only knows. Next it is History, with a three-minute talk, When there's a hard lesson a student will balk. Altho' forty-five minutes will go pretty fast It you will show interest the time is soon passed. The last class we study, and do our home-work, Some students are quiet with nary a jerk. Soon its dismissal, and we leave the school with glee But we still love our school, just as much as can be. You But For may find a fault here and there in your school when you do that-you are really a fool, nothing so perfect as all that you see, 'Cause its your school to you, and my school to me. SMART-SOPHOMORE CLASS S. F. D. S. H. S. 1887-88-89-90-91-92 Oh, for the life of a Sophomore. We may not be the most prominent in school activities, we may not be the social lights and of course, we are intellectu- ally inferior to the noble Juniors and the haughty Seniors--but what of that, we have our fun in our own simple way! We are at least superior to the Freshmen-God bless them-that is admitted by even the Juniors and Seniors. I shall not proceed to show why the Sophomore is better oi than the Juniors and Seniors, therefore, show why more students remain in the Sophomore class longer than in any other class. Ambition is a wonderful thing. Look what it did to Julius Caesar, but never- theless, most students have enough of it to get out of the Freshman Class. How? I shall not try to say. But anyway most of them manage to get into the Sophomore Class. Ah! what could be sweeter. Isn't that what Prof. W. Shakes- peare said? Look at the Juniors! What are they? They merely play second fiddle to the Seniors. The Seniors tolerate their presence merely because they expect a Prom and a. few entertainments from them during the year, and yet the Juniors are led to believe that the Seniors have accepted them. The Seniors, who are they? Nobody! ! ! ! Why are they haughty? Merely a sham. The Senior is living a life of dread. They see what is before them. If they enter a University the next year they are Freshmen again and in a. lower degree. Their only consolation is that in two years they will be a Sophomore again. If they do not continue the schooling they must go to work and all their glory is in vain. This proves that the life of a Sophomore is the one and only. They have only one drawback. That is that some day, they too must be a Junior and Senior. But why worry about that when it is so easy to stay in the Sophomore Class? Take it from someone who knows. M. L. MCC.
