Sack: 717mm?! Coffey: at'da'efazd, mark: 04005 m OFFICE OF THE: April I974 PRESIDENT To the Class of 1974: Yearbooks are among the most curious of publications. Th ey capture only one year in the lives of a college community, and the mere paper the pictures are printed on undergoes far less aging as the years progress than the people who inhabit those pictures. Depending on the moment in time we happen to open them, yearbooks graphically remind us of what we were compared to what we are, and the comparisons can evoke any number of emotions: laughter, nostalgia, fondness, regret, thonkfulness, - the list goes on. Most of all, yearbooks remind us that the past can be remembered, but not relived. Hopefully, this book will be a record of happiness and pride For each of you; hopefully it will bring Forth memories ofo time oF togetherness, of accomplishment, of growth of mind and spirit, of a college that helped you discover yourself and your place in the eternal scheme of things, of a year that was crucial - in the best sense - in the development of the person you have become. This book will never be more compelling to you than the First day you receive it and leisurely page through it, counting the number of times you were captured on Film in a variety of situations, savoring your graduation portrait. Years later when your children or grandchildren haul it out of some dusty attic, be prepared For some fun - especially as you try to give them o logical explanation For the 1974 phenom- enon of streaking. My greatest hope personally is that whenever this book is opened in the indefinite future, you will be impressed not so much by the fact that you have changed in the intervening years, but what kind of change has token place, and what role Saint Francis College played in Foeusing the direction of that change. it you are continuing to learn, to seek new challenges, to extend your devotion to God and the betterment of the lives of those around you, we hope that your undergraduate years with us will have provided the basic impetus for lthe ongoing vitality of your life. Thot is our reason For being. It is also my personal hope that your senior year will have proved to be a turning point in the history of Saint Francis College. This was a year marked by the introduc tion of wide-ranging changes in curriculum, the addition of energetic, Forward-Iooking people to the staff of the College and the design of distinctive new maior programs. In short, it was a year when Saint Francis College mapped at future for itself that would ensure growth and progress while other colleges were experiencing a slow decline, or even vanish- ing. The key to all oF our changes was the challenge of meeting the needs of our students better. And you, the Class of I974, played a vital role in it all - both directly and indirectly. Your cooperation, understanding, and suggestions For improvement were invaluable in helping solve the problems that wide- scale curricular transition inevitably brings. ln student life, you helped generate an enthusiasm, unity, and sense of personal responsibility to each other and the College that might have seemed impossible when you were freshmen. We thank the Class of I974 For that contribution, and we shall never forget it. Finally, the year was marked by the greatest personal tragedy I have ever known in the drowning of our son Bobby last July, yet it has also provided some of the greatest professional challenges and satisfac- tions I shall ever know. I hope that the past year will ultimately be one which is distinguished by the Strength that results from having met uncommon challenges and overcome them - both For myself and For the College. Thank you for everything you have done for Saint Francis College. I hope that we will merit your loyalty and support in the years ahead. Sincerely, Robert L. Horn President
