I? ..m V , v , avnyv, : $ , ,, , ; Y VVEA , H Rev. Clarence Laplante, 0.F.M A large part of Catholic Education revolves around the development of character. No one will deny that one of the most effective means in developing character is through good example. Father Clarence Laplante has been, and continues to be, an example to us all. It is for this reason that we, the Senior Class of St. Francis College, offer in dedication to him this, the second edition of MOTUS. Over the years Father Clarence has crossed our paths in several capacities. We first saw him as a teacher, then as Dean of Men, and now as President of our growing col- lege. However, beyond this, Father Clarence will always be remembered as our Iriend and advisor. ROGER P. FLEURANT WILLIAMC4 MURRAY RICHARD G. Norman Thibodeau Assumes Guardianship at Three Rivers Father Normanis appointment as Guardian of the Monastery at Three Rivers, Maine was both a great change and a great loss for St. Francis College where for nine- teen years he had dedicated him- self wholeheartedly. Father Nor- man came to Saint Francis shortly after his ordination in 1941 as Pre- fect of Discipline. Hereafter he held nearly all of the administra- tive positions in the college. ,He was Principal of the High School, Dean of Men, Registrar, Dean of Studies, President and Superior. More than any one else, Father Norman saw to the organization of the academic program and the present development of the college. We who have known him well re- call his paternal kindness and his never failing interest in every organization. tContinued on Page twoi By John Shepard Staff Reporter At an interview granted the Sepian, Father Clarence expressed his sincere desire to expand our college building-wise. He hopes to have one or maybe two baiidings under construction in the very near future. Tae financial backing for the project may come from various sources. Some of the possi- bilities being explored are: Grants from commercial foundations such as Ford or General Motors; the organization of an honorary elum- ni association consisting of busi- ness and professional men of the surrounding area; a format fund raising campaign such as Saint Soccer Captains Joseph's in nearby North Windham Much of the success attained by our soccer team can be credited to the capable leadership of the two excellent co-captains, A1 Ber- ard and Bob Couture. A1 Berard, a senior philosophy major, hails from West Warwick, R. I. He has been a member of the soccer team for four years and pated in baseball and basketball. 0n the intramural level. He was President of the Liturgy Club, Master of Novices in the Third Order and Business Manager of the SEPIAN. His immediate plans are directed toward the seminary. To both captains, much success was elected captain at the comple- in their future undertakings. recently made. Father did state though that such a campaign rests entirely on permission from the Ordinary. He further explained the financial burden the diocese is carrying at present and sees no chance for such a drive before 1962. As of yet St. Francis has not applied to the New England Board to acquire regional accredation. - h at we are zaknesses te library . Apart from a little softball no sport has been successfully organized at the ex- tremities of the scholastic year. The basketball season is different. Everyone on campus is affected by it to some extent. Despite the difficulties of having but one gym, which must be shared with the varsity, a full round of intramural games is still played. This year in regular season we played thirty- six games, besides the five play -off games. We had nine teams, four of them freshman, three sophomore, one junior and the last faculty-senior. Freshman speed proved too much for the more sedentary and more scholarly others. Consequently the freshmen got the vic- tories. The play-offs put in competition the four top teams, the faculty-senior team excluded. Team No. l, sparked by Richard Mathieu, pulled out an uncon- tested championship. To put a dramatic close to a season, that was never dull, the faculty-senior team staged a come back in an exhibi- tion game. With the help of two able imports the faculty-senior team upset the champions 59-37. Thus, after many humiliations, the faculty was able to save face. General Manager, Ft.
