Cfam silid for? The fall of 54 was a strange one at St. Francis. Forty-two uninitiated and timid freshmen invaded St. Francis. Initiation week-end, with its fears, finally sprang Upon us. Having survived this ordeal we were strengthened by the spiritual influence of our retreat and now Columbus vacation offered us our first refuge from our new life at the Franciscan hermitage. Returning from our vacation we finally felt that we were part of the boys. We were pushed into mid-year exams. Basketball ended and shortly before Easter, baseball got under way. Final exams terminated our initial year at St. Francis. With the superior feeling that we were no longer freshmen we returned for a second year at the fort. Our original group had now diminished to nineteen. However, with this meager group of intellectuals, we flourished in our Golden Year. Spitballs and water pistols thrived ex- tremely well. Caesar gave us a particularly difficult time. This was the crucial year of all those miserable detention periods. Christmas came to us as a relief from all these hardships. Upon returning from our Yuletide vacation we settled down to face the long wait until Easter. Then Lady Scarlatina struck and left a path of ill-stricken students to lie in bed and groan about the loss of a vacation. The drudgery of a long winter gave way to Easter and springtime enioyment. We took advantage of this bright sunshine to prepare the boats for future use. On April 27th, 1956, a tragic incident descended upon our class and the whole school. Roland A. Paulus, our vice-president, friend, and class scholar, went to his eternal reward. September of 56 brought back nineteen original freshmen accompanied by seven unknown faces. The football season, accompanied by hard work, proved to be an interesting one. Sports combined with studies kept most of as extremely busy. Returning to our classrooms after Thanksgiving, we proved successful in our many enterprises such as entertaining the student body with numerous parties. Christmas spirit did not fail us, as usual, and before we knew it, we were struggling with the second semester. Springtime, once again, bloomed at St. Francis. The winning baseball team, with a 6-2 record, was a credit to our retiring coach, Mr. Steve White. We the class of 58 returned for our final year at the old homestead. Early in October we succumbed to the onslaught of assignments and hard work. Finally, our turn came to initiate the freshmen into the flock. After a well or- ganized party, warm-heartedly given in our honor by the junior class, we then left for our last Christmas vacation. Spoiled by a tremendously long vacation at home, spent mostly in adiusting the dials of the T.V. set, we returned to school with unottensive groans and grunts for the last academic stretch towards gradua- tion. Our duty it was to climb the staunch wall of English, English, English as- signments! ! ! Although pressed for time, we were able to salvage a few precious moments to put together our hopeful plans for a successful prom and graduation. 'l'l
