Student Government The Student Government of St. Francis College is concerned with the affairs of the student body in their relations with the College and the surrounding com¬ munities. The purpose of Student Government is to act as a sounding board for all student interests, while at the same time assuming the task of providing efficient and productive leadership for the student body. Elected annually by the student body, the Student Government derives its power from and is essentially responsible to the students of the College. It is the responsibility of the Student Government to act as the legitimate representatives of the student body before the various groups involved with the College community. The powers and duties of the Student Government are vested in a Student Government Constitution. The Student Government is composed of three bran¬ ches: an Executive Branch, a Legislative Branch, and a Judicial Branch. Members of the Executive and Legislative Branches are elected each Spring (except for Freshmen Officers) according to provisions of the Student Government Constitu¬ tion. The Student Government is funded by the collection of a Student Activity Fee paid by all Full Time Day Students of the College. The blood drive came about when Ms. Clarie Fay of the Office of Student Activities was con¬ tacted by officials of the Greater New York Blood Program in reference to holding an emergency blood drive to help out the depleted Blood supply in the city. Ms. Fay then sought out a campus group that would take on this last minute job; Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity volunteered to do it since groups that used to run the Drive were no longer around. To advertise the event the Brothers of Alpha Phi Delta placed up some 100 or so posters and distributed donor cards and signs around the school. Helping them out with this task was the Health Ser¬ vice Office which at the time was temporarily staffed by Mr. Louis Malkin R.N. R.R.T. Nurse Malkin assisted in getting donors and coordinating the activity on 1M. In addition to all of the regular items used to solicit blood, a letter was distributed to allay student fears that may contract Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) by giving blood. The letter stated that contracting AIDS by giving blood is impossible. As precautions the equipment used during the drive (i.e., needles, tubes-, etc.) are destroyed after initial use and the trash left over after the drive is taken back with them and destroyed. The Officials of the Greater New York Blood Program informed SFC that the Blood Shortage (due primarily to the AIDS scare) in New York City has become so severe that 30% of the Blood being used right now is being imported from Europe. The Blood Drive at the College was initially supposed to be in the Spring, however the shortage was so bad that people at GNYBP decided that two blood drives (one in fall, the other in spring) would be necessary. The Drive started at 9:00 AM on October 19th in 1M. The tables and equipment were ready to roll by 10:00 AM and the donors began to trickle in. To press the need for blood a projector was set up near the cafeteria entrance highlighting the need by showing a film about the use of Blood donations. Blood donors were given food and drink following their donations of blood. Some 30 per¬ sons signed up to give blood but only 41 of them actually were allowed to give blood; the other 9 were turned down for various health reasons. The turnout of 30 was only fair for a blood drive but very good considering the drive was put together in under 2 weeks. The drive ended at 2:00 PM that day and the lounge was left relatively cle an. The GNYBP left with 41 much needed pints of blood. In relation to this Alpha Phi Delta received a special letter of commendation from Dean James C. Adam PhD, Vice President for Student Affairs Dean of Students. Dr. Adams thanked the Brothers for their willingness” and their seeing it through.” | ' • ew i m. Maybe, but this legend points up what was perhaps the most characteristic trait of St. Francis — he loved life. Not only did he love his fellowman, but he loved everything in this world of ours. The story of the Franciscans in the Diocese of Brooklyn began when the Right Reverend John Laughlin, the first Bishop of Brooklyn, decided to establish a school system for his diocese. The bishop requested aid from the Irish Congregation of the Franciscan Brothers. On May 31, IS38, two Franciscan Brothers, John McMahon and Vincent Hayes, arrived from Galway to begin St. Francis Academy, the first private secondary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn. This was the beginning of what would someday become St. Francis College. The first home of this institution would be a building on Baltic Street converted into a school by the brothers and a layman, Martin St. Ledger. In 1868 the Brooklyn Congregation of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis received legal status under the name (t The St. Francis Monastery of the City of Brooklyn” By the year 1884 the St. Francis Monastery had grown considerably, so much so that the New York State Legislature empowered the trustees to establish a literary college in the City of Brooklyn under the name of Saint Francis College, with the power to confer diplomas, honors, and degrees. This was done on May 8, of that year; this day is now known as Charter Day ” and is celebrated annually by the College. The first Bachelor of Arts Degree was conferred in June 1883; seven years later the first Bachelor of Science Degree was granted. Saint Francis College is chartered by the Legislature of the State of New York. The college is accredited by the Regents of the University of the State of New York and by the Middle State Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The college is a member of the National Catholic Education Association, the Association of the Colleges and Universities of the State of New York, the Association of American Colleges, the Franciscan Education Conference, the Commission on Christian Higher Education, and the National Commission on Ac¬ crediting. It is affiliated with the Catholic University of America. There is a chapter of the American Association of University Professors on campus. Change and growth have been an integral part of St. Francis ever since its beginnings. In 1926, after a drive for the erection of a new building to provide space for the large influx of students, the Butler Street building was opened. In 1939, the College erected a four story structure known as Jerome Hall, which was used for student services. In 1932 the building formerly used by St. Francis Preparatory School was converted into a student activity building called Terrier Hall (it was removed in 1937). In I960 the big change for our College began: the College purchased five office buildings from Brooklyn Union Gas Company that spring. These buildings on Remsen Street, between Court and Clinton Streets through to Joralemon Street in the heart of the Brooklyn Civic Center was the first step in the college’s expansion program. This enabled the College to double its enrollment. The main building (the art building) on Remsen Street was opened in September of 1962. The eight-story brick and steel structure houses the Administrative offices, the student lounge, the chapel, and the guidance center (Career Planning). Adjacent to the main buildings is the McGarry Library which has more than 100,000 volumes. In 1968 the College underwent its biggest transition ever with the contraction of the Science Building which offered expanded opportuni¬ ty for laboratory work in the physical sciences and the Student Faculty Building (Faculty Residence) which houses additional lounge and office spaces. In 1972 the gymnasium was completed, which is housed in the Physical Education Building; this building houses the gym, offices, and Olympic size pool, a sauna, large seating capacity, and other facilities. Then, St. Francis College made another vast change in this era; the formerly all-male College went co- educational in 1969 and therein opened its doors to women. A burgeoning new era was beginning for our College. Recently, in 1983 the Student Faculty Lounge on the Mez¬ zanine was dedicated. St. Francis College has in the past educated many priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Rockville Center. We have contributed to the life of the community, giving it many distinguished public servants, scientists, men of letters, lawyers, and businessmen. It has especially con¬ tributed to the academic community, having trained many teachers. The quality of education at Saint Francis College is evident in the caliber of its graduates. Although St. Francis has grown considerably since its humble beginnings, it still retains the Franciscan Spirit” which has always made our College unique and has more importantly made it our College. Sincerely, Claire C. Fay To the Class of ' 84: As you leave the stage with your diploma in hand, you will be at the crossroads to the future. Some will continue their education and then enter the job market and may, or may not continue their education. Whichever you follow, let it be with the knowledge that your professors at St. Francis have only tapped your potential in the classroom, it has been said, whether precisely or roughly is unimportant, that most of us use only one tenth of our potential. If all of us used only fifty percent of our potential what a different world this atomic age would be! And, what would it be like if we all used one-hundred percent of our potential? That is the challenge that faces you today. Good Luck, but more importantly. LORSTAI THOMAS STIDIOS FOREMOST SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHERS IN THE EAST 178 Four years ago dawned the beginning of a new experience for most of us who are graduating from St. Francis. For myself it was an experience — filled at first with fear and anticipation but the latter proved to be fulfilling and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m sure this was the feeling of most of you also. One of my greatest moments here at St. Francis was producing the college yearbook. Much time, dedica¬ tion and love went into the book, but it was not by one’s dedication alone. It was the combination of six others’. This is where I would like to thank them individually for their time, dedication, love and most of all their patience with me — thanks Maria, John, Giulio and Jeanne. I’d like to make a special thanks to two special people; Meni Pesce, who was my right hand through the production of the entire book, and to Joe Albanese for his support and for taking the time to create a cover for our yearbook. Again, thank you all. I hope this book keeps all the warm memories that you have experienced here at St. Francis close to your heart as I know it will for me. My sincerest congratulations to the graduates of 1984!
