Many feel that once they have achieved their goals they have ! succeeded. But success is not measured by what you have but by what obstacles you have overcome and the manner in which you have overcome them. What is important is the level of desire and the quality of work your desire was channeled into. The mere achievement of a goal without effort will make it less meaningful. Remember the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is not found easily. So it is with the pot of gold you will receive upon graduation from St. Francis. The pot of gold will be in the form of an education based on hard work, dedication and a sense of self-worth that will last a life time. Let us hope that the end of the St. Francis rainbow that graduation brings will not be the last. For the greatest challenges or pots of gold lie in the future. We can only wish that the experiences you have had here at St. Francis provide the stepping stone necessary to make all your future goals reachable. The best in everything you do CLASS OF 1983. 32 Martina Adeniran B.S. Health Care Richard Aliberti B.S. Health Service Lisa Andersen B.S. Management Parny Alcindor B.S. Management V STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Student Government of St. Frances College is an organization of many dedicated students whose main task is to coordinate the student body of the college. This does not only concern the students in relation to the college, but also their relation to the surrounding communities. One of the main purposes of the Student Government is to act as a sounding board for any desires and interests the students might express. Along with the responsibility of hearing the needs of the student body, the Student Government of St. Francis is trying to make a better St. Francis to all concerned. Their services are for the benefit of the students as individuals and as part of the college. The elections for Student Government positions occurs every Spring semester of every academic year. These elections are very important because the people elected play a very important role at the college as student representatives. They are elected by a majority of the student body; and for that reason they are expected to act as the legitimate representatives of the student body and are to act in the best interests of the students. 66 JOUK. The Troupers developed from a local drama club, the St. Francis Literary Union, which had been formed in the late 1800's at S.F.C. The Troupers have performed in a variety of dramatic productions, most recently: The Bawdy Adventures of Scapin. Arsenic and Old Lace, Visit to a Small Planet, and the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The Troupers membership includes a tremendous cross-section of the student body, with members in all fraternities, sororities, and clubs on campus, and participate or attend as many activities at school as possible. A very close-knit group. The Troupers learn and practice many branches of theatrical activity, from stage craft like carpentry, set construction, electrical work, to make-up techniques, lighting effects, sound effects, and so on. Producing one full-length play each semester, with trained, fully-qualified professional director, and one production consisting of four one-act plays each directed by a Trouper in their senior year at the start of the Spring semester, rehearsed over the intersession vacation. Yet within the few years of its existence it has become one of the most outspoken and active groups within the St. Francis community. In actuality XEO has risen up to be a fraternity with many credits and honors. It is a unique fraternity and inevitably has become a DYNASTY! It was preconceived in the Fall 1978 and received its charter by the Spring of 1979. So we can say XEO is going on its fourth year at S.F.C. XEO is strictly a social fraternity. This enables the members to get better acquainted with the school. We feel this social atmosphere makes for a well rounded student. We can provide the leisure activities that are imperitive in a students years at the college and in the future. The convocation began with a processional of School Administrators, Faculty, and members of the Duns Scotus Honor Society. Stephanie lovino. Secretary of Duns Scotus, carried the oldest book in the McGarry Library, a Greek Dictionary printed in 1521. After everyone was seated, the Nationa Anthem was played, followed by the invocation given by Reverend Brother Edwin Gill. O.S.F.. next he welcomed everyone to the ceremony, and thanked them for their assistance throughout the rebuilding process. St. Francis college was than honored by the presence of guest speaker John I. Simon. Ph. D. Dr. Simon was announced by Bro. Donald, and after organizing his notes, he began a brilliant oration on the value of books in our society. He alluded to the power which lies within the bindings of certain boos. He also pointed out the sad fact that our society has adopted to its best seller list, diet books, jogging books, and cook books. In summation Dr. Simon delivered an awesome and powerful speech which held the audience spellbound, while at times interjecting a touch of humor. Following Dr. Simon's stunning address, there was an acknowledgement of gifts. A Benediction was then given by Reverend Michael Carrano. The school alma mater was sung, followed by the processional which existed Founder's Hall and down Remsen Street to the steps of McGarry Library. A ribbon-cutting ceremony then took place and once the ribbon had been cut. the processional and invited guests of the ocnvocation proceeded into the library for a wine and cheese reception which was the finale of the day's event. Also present at the convocation ceremony was Mr. Frank Macchiarola. Chancelor of N.Y.C. Board of Education, and Brooklyn Borough President Mr. Howard Golden. The renovation and expansion of the library was completed at a cost of two million dollars. The reconstruction entailed major structural changes in the library and adjoining buildings. Following the completion of renovation, the McGarry Library was cited by the office of the Brooklyn Borough President as one of “Brooklyn's grand old buildings'' which has withstood the test of time and have been adapted to serve new and useful purposes. The building which houses the McGarry Library served as the corporate headquarters of the Brooklyn Union Gas Company during the 19th century. 151 ST. FRANCIS STAMP CEREMONY OCTOBER 8, 1982 On October 8th, 1982 here at the College a ceremony in celebration of the 800th Birthday of St. Francis of Assisi was held in the Founders' Hall Auditorium area. The highlight at this celebration was the issuance of the United States Commemorative postage stamp in the honor of St. Francis. The festivities began at three o'clock in the auditorium, and finished with a wine and cheese reception in the Founders' Hall Study Area. Bro. Donald Sullivan O.S.F. presided over the events of the day as approximately one hundred invited guests looked on. As the program for the day unfolded the National Anthem was sung by all, followed by an Invocation given by the Very Reverend Bro. Edwin Gill who is the Superior General of the Franciscan Brothers. A Welcomeing address ensured this, it was given by Bro. Donald Sullivan who welcomed one and all, and expressed his happiness on this occasion. Bro. Donald introduced Reverend James A. Gardiner, S.A. who is the Chairperson of the Executive Committee on the 800th Anniversary of the Birth of St. Francis. Reverend Gardiner gave a lenghthy nonetheless informative and enlightening speech on the effect of St. Francis on the world. He noted how the Franciscan spirit inspired by St. Francis would be of great help to our troubled world. A good round of applause followed Reverend Gardiner's speech. The next speaker introduced by Bro. Donald was the Postmaster General of Brooklyn. Jack LaZard. Mr. LaZard made a few statements about St. Francis and his effect on us and the proceeded to what would be the highlight of the day-the presentation of the Stamp. Bro. Donald was presented by Mr. LaZard with a sheet of the new stamp lacquered and embossed onto a wooden plaquard. Br. Donald Sullivan accepted the presentation and humorously commented that the reason the stamps were lacquered onto the wood was so that he couldn't use them. In addition to this presentation a proclamation was read out as written by the Honorable Mayor Edward Koch of the City of New York. The proclamation said the October 8th would, from this day forward be St. Francis of Assis Day in New York City. Ending the ceremonies was a benediction given by the Reverend Michael A. Cerrano, President of the Alumni Association. After which the guests were moved to Founder Hall study area for a Gala” wine and cheese reception. Immediately outside of Founders' Hall in the front of the College was a Mobile Post Office Van out of which the St. Francis Stamp was being sold. Also in the College Relations Office a commemorative first day cover was being sold for a dollar each. The reception broke up around five o'clock. All involved in the ceremony seemed to enjoy themselves and the invited guests seemed to find the day very festive and informative. ■■ FRESHMAN ORIENTA TION Freshman Orientation Chairperson; Joli K.
